Tortoise suddenly laying eggs

We have 4 rescue tortoises, 2 that live on their own and 2 together. The 2 together have been together for about 5 years, and suddenly the large girl has laid several eggs! She has only just come up from hibernation this year. We haven't noticed any change in behaviour from with tortoise, and certainly no mounting etc

Can a female tortoise lay eggs unfertilised, or does that mean the other one is definitely a male?
If he is a male, why hasn't she laid anything for 5 years?

Yes they can lay infertile eggs. This is how the family George was found to be Georgette Grin
