Sadly, last night my gerbil died. We'd had her 3 years, which I suppose is a good age really. But she leaves behind her sister; they've been together since they were born. She's just sitting in her wheel, looking forlornly (it's breaking my heart). We've tried coaxing her out, giving her a cuddle, giving her lots of loo rolls to chew on to keep her occupied but nothing is working. I'm worried this one may die too as a result of a broken heart if that's even possible. Do we get another for company? Advice please. x

Going through this with my hamster. Had two sister and both been together and bought together since birth. Minky and Binky, Minky died last week and since Binky will not come out of the little bedded area, I've tried everything, apples, cuddles, popping her into her ball but she just sits in it. I can't offer advice because nothing is working for us either, but I hope she perks up. I did wonder about getting another but it's likely that Binky will then die before the other and leave the other one lonely, i am expecting and don't really want two hamsters, a cat and two children. But I feel awful about her being in there all alone x

My mum said that she suspects Binky will die soon as they often go around the same time, which is awful, I'm hoping she sticks around for a little while longer x

@emmagrace96 tbh, I'll be amazed if Minnie doesn't pass away in the near future. Daisy only died last night, so it's early days but she is just sitting, staring into empty space. It's heartbreaking to watch. I can't believe I've got so upset over a bloody gerbil! I'm contemplating getting 2 babies, but there's a chance Minnie won't take to them & I can't have another furry death on my hands. x

Clean the cage out so it no longer smells of the one that's passed away.

Other than that you're doing the right thing with regards to extra loo rolls and attention.

It's early days. I'm sure she'll be fine.

Don't be tempted to get a new gerbil. It's very unlikely she'll accept it and gerbils fight to the death.
