Piggy boom!

Hello, I just wanted to chat pigs. I have two of my own and I take in foster piggies from a rescue. I recently took in five pregnant females and two males from a lady who had approximately 60 to 70 guinea pigs. So I am going to have a pig boom in the very near future. I do love the little things, they are tiny miniatures of their parents and it is very sweet but I wish people were more responsible. I do not disagree with breeding, but you have to do it responsibly and you need to be able to know that you can find homes For your Babies. Don’t Just breed because you think it’s something cute to do order for the kids.

My pigs (apart from 1) have all been rescue pigs.
No accidental babies here 🐹

@EastMids I was a lurker on MN for ages before i joined up and saw your great love for the furry little heartbreakers.
They do steel your heart don’t they? I am sorely tempted to keep at least 3 of the new piggies.

All 4 of our pigs have been rescues. Our rabbit is also a rescue. We're down to our final pig now as I've decided (reluctantly) not to have any more and our bereaved girl seems perfectly content (happier) on her own! In the future I plan to foster pigs or rabbits for a local rescue providing I can persuade DH that it's still essential to have them around even when the kids have left home.

When we are both retired and are pigless I am thinking fostering may be the way to go.

Baby Piglets are The Cutest of all the little furcoats . I had some accidental litters as a child (2 sows who weren't and one sow who was already pg)

My GPs (GP1 through to GP8) are all rescue pigs. GP4 and GP5 were part of a massive rescue , something in the region of 240 hogs , the day before we got them they'd weaned their piglets (we found out later that some of their piglets didnt survive due to their poor breeding )

I know a few Rescues now routinely castrate their boars to make rematching them easier. They use vets that do a high % of small animal surgery and give them better rates, but it does put up the adoption fee whih might put some people off.
When we got GP6 (our current boar) he was £10 and we gave £40 for his surgery .

There seem to be a lot of hobby breeders on Gumtree , I do wonder what happens to the pigs they don't sell? Do they end up in the breeding cycle?

And the ones who will just sell on their ex breeders we want this lovely sow to have a home to spoil her in her retirement the adverts gush. Poor animal has bred for the first 3 years then her usefullness is over. Here's an idea Breeder. Give the animal her retirement home yourself . Give her a lovely spoiled life that she deserves. But no, they just move onto the next young sows .
