Guinea pigs escaped and were badly stung by nettles.

Will they be ok? I was cleaning them out and someone came to the door so I left them in the cage with the door open (DP was in the garden too so I thought he'd realised).

He thought they were in the run so came to chat at the door with me. We went back to the garden and they had all got out and were running through the bushes and a huge patch of nettles.

Ever since they went through them they've been making funny noises and twitching. I checked on them just now and they seem better than earlier. Poor things :(

I had no idea guinea pigs could be stung by stinging nettles.

Sorry that wasn't helpful! I'd just keep a close eye on them and see how they are tomorrow

Guinea pigs generally have bare paw pads, the nettles can irritate them badly - if you rub them, the teeny nettle hairs will detach and they will feel a bit better.

Oh poor souls.
Their ears, paws, noses/lips and eye rims are most at risk being skin.

Have you got any aloe vera?
(I was searching for something to use on my boars ears to hydrate the skin, aloe vera or coconut oil was recommended)

I think for your pigs could you give them a quick wipe over the skin with a warm flannel , dry them and lots of hay (not bath weather at the moment)
