Cat grooming us, why?

We have a very friendly cat that we got from a rescue centre in 2012. We think he is now 6 or 7 YO.
He is a lovely chilled boy.
He has a habit of licking us. It is usually when we have been stroking him and then stop or when he is just sat next to one of us. He isn't fussy could be me DH or DC even friends. Hmm
I have googled this behaviour and not found any firm information about this behaviour. Does anyone feline here know why he might be doing this, what it means & what he is telling us?
As much as I love my boy, wondering if I can stop him!
