Can I reuse wooden shelves for my new pet rats? The cage and sheves used to house mice.

I'm getting some new pet rats, only babies.

The cage is second hand through preloved.co.uk, and came with some quite creative wooden ledges, bridge, etc. I've given the it a thorough wash but wondered if I could use wood that has probably been chewed and weed on? Is there any point in wiping or spraying with pet disinfectant? Doesn't seem right to get it too wet as that'll potentially cause damp and rot?

I don't mind replacing it but similarly I don't want to throw away something that's ok to use.

It will end up stinking. We had wooden stuff and it ends up with wee all over it and has to be thrown. That's why I didn't buy a cage with wooden shelves.

Thanks, I think you're right. Have left it outside for a while in the hope the smell will be aired out but still some aroma. My eyes were streaming when I brought it home in the car.
