My 2 girls have asked for a tortoise each for Christmas. I'm keen too. Any tips please? Is it realistic to buy them in December (should they be hibernating?!) and what would we need for them? Thanks in advance.

I would wait until the spring and take advice as to how to care for them.

Thanks Lizs, I wondered if that might be the case. I thought they would be such a lovely pressie and a departure from plastic tat and electrical devices!

Can't you "adopt" them in anticipation - make up adoption certificates and picture, care information? look at the tortoise trust website.
