My poor little piggie is at the vets tomorrow...

To have his tooth filed down.

One of his bottom teeth broke (he likes chewing the wires on his run) and the tooth above it has over grown. He's eating and drinking fine and doesn't seem bothered at all. The vet said he would need sedating and I'm so worried about him.

I have so many questions now. I'm not sure if I'm just dropping him off in the morning or I'll need to stay. He's going to miss his brother I hope he doesn't get too stressed.

I didn't realise how attached I was!

Our pigs have broken teeth in the past and they've kept on eating (but these are front ones) - is it your pigs back teeth that need done?

Usually the front ones can be done with clippers and wide awake (not a pleasant noise though) The back ones need a retractor and the pigs aren't very agreeable, plus they have a narrow jaw,

My boar was neutered in July so he was aneathetised (sp) , he won't be sedated any longer than needed, but yes, it is a huge worry.

Can his brother go with him?
We've always taken our boars together for moral support, but when GP3 was castrated his wifeys didn't attend. We'd only had them 3 days and they were in quarentine.

Take his friend with him - my vets like them to go together. Having said that one of mine was sedated for x-rays and he went on his own (brave pig). He was fine. I dropped him off in the morning and the vets called me to collect him mid-afternoon.

It's his front teeth that need trimming. Although the vet said he would take a proper look at the back teeth too.

I'll ring the surgery when it opens and ask if it's alright to bring his brother too.

My old boy Todd did the same twice but luckily his teeth grew back without need for any dental. It did mean I had to grate his veg for a few days. The reason Todd broke his teeth was he was trying to get to his girlfriends. We just stopped closing the hutch door except at night he agreed to it at bedtime. Todd and his girlfriends lived indoors.

I see from your OP that Steve broke his teeth on his run. Does he gnaw the wire only when outside?

Just a suggestion, you could try a barrier between him and the wire. Owners who use C&C indoor set ups use Correx to keep bedding from going everywhere. Correx is thin corregated plastic used in sign writing, it can be white or virtually see through. Its easily cut to size and secured with plastic cable ties could be made into a wall around the inside of the run. The height of the wall will need to be the height of Steve standing up on his back paws plus a little extra. Have a look on you tube for C&C cages. There's a lot of guinea owners who like to post their guinea pig set ups.

There was a pig on here years ago called Jeff.

(I love human names for animals though. Our boys RL name is Dylan but he's Dill. I called my pig after a biscuit - Oreo )

Actually I think pig was Geoffrey not Jeff (old gimmer, memory fading)

All our animals have person names - I much prefer it.

If GP5 had been DD pig she'd have been Elsa ( from Frozen). DD had always hankered after a tri-colour (all the boars were self colours) so when she saw Trinity......

(I'm sure she appreciates being called Oreo though )

He's great although his teeth look really short now! But he's eating fine so they must be okay.

Steve generally only bites the wires when he sees me. It's generally his 'I'm starving, you haven't feed me in a week' signal.

Todd/ OB is definately "Boar on the Prowl" material

We had GP3 side-by-siding with his two sows (he was in the Pighouse, they were in the plastic base-metal topped cage) . He would park his rather ample rump in the gap between the cage and his haybox. He couldn't see anything but he knew they were there so he had company (his male cagemate had died and he had to be castrated)
Even now that he's bonded he doesn't chew bars (much better to chew grass) though we used to have a couple of noisy sows when I was a child.Bar chewers, tooth losers. The last of four didn't chew, she was free range. Her teeth had to be clipped occasionally.
