In my life i'm going through a pretty crap time.
Driving home today on the motorway I saw a bunny! Looks like a dalmation. And I stopped in a no stop/no hard shoulder bit, got out, grabbed him and got back in the car. Then had to drive home with a rabbit sitting in the passenger footwell.
I'm in love! anyway dp is furious about me picking it up - please help me show him that any animal lover would do that!.....i'm not nuts, am I?

Tomorrow i'm getting a big hutch for him. Keeping him inside like my girls. My spare bedroom is piggy proof so they have that to play in in bad weather (is bunny proofing any different to piggy proofing?) they won't be playing together though.
Outside in good weather (but not between 11 & 3, Vet said that's really bad for my Guineas and checked today and same applies to bunnies) got a huge run for Guineas off the internet and will get one for him too.

I'd have stopped too.

I've attempted to stop before for some greyhounds someone dumped on the motorway Sad I called the police but I couldn't get them to come to the car

How about after the town or services he was closest to?

Like Wycombe for high Wycombe?

I can't understand it - I adored my childhood pets. Had my first Guineas at 4 and helped clean out ect every time. Took over all of my pets care when I was 10 (my reward for reaching double digits!) And I loved everyone minute of taking care of them, not just the cuddles.
What's gone wrong with families that they think they can ditch pets when they've had enough of them?!

Rabbits are worse chewers than guineas - wires, wallpaper, skirting board , they don't mind.
Outside, they dig (my pigs have a big rabbit run, but there's no base. The pigs don't even dream about digging, we just make sure it's secured with tent pegs in the grass.) But I think for rabbits you need to dig a trench and sink the wire mesh under the soil, I'm sure there are loads of threads on here.

Are you going to let Mr Snufkins be free-range outdoors? Is your garden secure (one of my NDN has a Free Range rabbit, so sweet to watch but they have high fences and no escape route for him)

Can't imagine calling him "handy cross" which was the massive roundabout we were near.

Can I point out that the original owners must have stopped on the motorway also to abandon the poor thing.

Wild rabbits are brown not white with black spots.

Have a look on Gumtree Joker they don't even bother to disguise the fact they want rid sometimes and add "I want £80 to make sure he gets a good home"

Poor little souls, not only do their owners want to see the back of them, they;ll palm them off to whoever applies and they want to profit from them Angry

Vets seem to be encouraging bunny owners to get them chipped and I know some rescues chip so it's perfectly believable. It's a good job you caught him, an escaped pet wouldn't last long in the wild. Have you named him?

JokersGiggle · 11/05/2014 00:31

The garden is secure but there are so many bold foxes, cats and red kites about I don't dare let him run free.
my girls only go in the run if I can sit outside with them (im not exaggerating lol) a friends jrt was swooped at by a red kite and snufkin is about the same size as the dog.

So in the "play room" there are no wires or sockets at small animal height to worry about. Hard wood flooring which id like to keep nice. Skirting board is already a little bit chewed (moo had a tempertantrum over having her bum wiped and decided to chew in revenge). Should I take the paint off if he's likely to chew it?

Have you got a Costco nearby Joker . I bought a shelving unit that was the same as the C&C cages - (IIRC 14" squares ) I think there are 20 squares + corner fasteners. I bought it just in case my guineas ever need a new indoor run though at the moment there are towels in it (it's made up as a shelf unit)

You could put something like that round the edge ? In a long line?

Aw so glad your keeping him.

Least now his golden years can be spent happy and loved.

Give him a cuddle from me.

Joker- can't understand all the comments you got at first. I would have done exactly the same. You didn't stop in the middle of the motorway and your post clearly said he was not wild. Well done and I hope Snufkin has a lovely time with you.

Ive seen people stopping on the motorway for even more spurious reasons than rescuing a bunny...putting top down on convertible for instance. Good on you op I hope Snufkins enjoys his new home!

Im off to pets at home to get him his home! He has decided he wants a double story one for max space Smile I'll settle him in that then look into getting something to line the walls of the playroom with.
Put him down to run in the kitchen this morning and he went crazy! Looked like he was having a great him popping and bucking around! then he sat on my foot!!!!
Does anyone know about litter training? In the kitchen he kept doing his poos on the back door mat - would make things easier if he'd do it in a litter tray in the play room. My girls do their business anywhere and takes ages to clear up.

I just realised I forgot to ask about vaccinations. Is there anyway for the Vet to test if he's had them?
my vets are shut today Sad

The micro chip records may have those details?

Worth calling and asking tomorrow and then getting them done. It's RAW next week isn't it? Free check ups available at some vets

Gosh, poor thing :( You were a muppet for stopping, but I think I'd have done the same if I saw a fancy rat at the side of a busy road sucker for rats, I wouldn't be able to tell with rabbits though I don't think!

giles what's RAW?

My vets are doing free health checks. op could take advantage if hers are.

If he's pooing in one spot put a litter tray there with wooden pellet based litter in it. PAH do a bunny one but most supermarkets do a cat litter which is the same and cheaper. Once he's got used to using the litter try in his chosen spot you cAn move it to where you want it to be although this can take time. When you first put the litter tray down put some of his poops in there so it smells of him.

I loved the way the OP has been accused of bunny-napping a wild black and white spotted rabbit! Yeah cos there are loads of them just hopping around with their lop eared bunny mates in the wild.

I am pleased you rescued him OP and I hope you and your furry family have a hoppy future Grin
