My lovely DH, (who is a techy type) wanted to buy a camera for the guinea-pigs cage ...what the Jeff?

He accuses me of spoiling the GPs - when I bring in huge bags of hay and straw.
Strawberries (the DC eat them too)
I bring 'hoggy-bags' from work lunches if there's been a fruit platter.

But the camera
His idea- "you'll be able to keep a check on them.You can link it up to the computer"

Errrrrrmm- much as I love the boars, they're not gold lined valuable breeding stock.
And like a baby alarm, I'd see 'bits' of what went on.
I might see them fight and ,though I know they do it from time to time, I don't really want to see it.

He's fitted a light in their house.
They've got a radiator
A little tube heater for taking the chill off (but not enough for this time of year)
He's working on an outdoor run idea that they can access (rather than the rabbit run that they need to be put into)

I should be glad he cares about the little boys

it sounds awesome. the sort if thing you can do with a raspberry pi. how cool is that?!
PS send him here. my girlpigs would live the radiator / light / flatscreen telly he's put in

My DH is always ordering things from Ebay and Maplin.
All these cables and connecting things arrive.

But a camera was just a step too far.
(I thought he was kidding. He was serious)

Light and heating, no flatscreen TV for the hogs (don't give them ideas)
They had a radio in their bedroom for NYE in case the fireworks upset them.

That's.. um... excessive.

I mean we considered a camera when we had ratties because of the commotion they made at night (they'd be sat all still and quiet if you tried to spot what they were up to) But we wouldn't actually do it

ahh but 70 you know your boys are the centre of the universe. and you know more about piggies than any book. fact. you just know you want live streaming from PigCam. just as long as you can pee-proof it

if I had girl guineas breeding I'd maybe consider it (just maybe).
But my hogs just eat, pooh, fart and bicker.
Not exactly riviting viweing.

The light is essential as their Pighouse is half way down the garden and a torch just doesn't cut it (a torch creates way too many shadows.And it's me going into the Pighouse at night)
The radiator was bought because I gave them hot water bottles that were cold within 5 hours. So no good.
The little tubular heater can go on a timer in the springtime to just take the chill off.

As well as pee-proofing, there's the problem with chew-proofing. It would need to be in the haybox.

IMO - DH watches far too much "Most Haunted"

it would be a right bummer if you he went to all that trouble and all you could see was hay until the teeth came into view

Ha ha, my DH suggested something similar! I half expected to wake up Christmas morning with full CCTV coverage set up (and early tapes of two overindulged boars gurning for the camera!)

I'll swap your 'guinea loving' dh for my 'dislikes the pigs' dh!

Be interesting though, you will be able to catch then ballrooming it on two legs round the pighouse

70 - sounds like your DH loves a project. Can't you re-focus him on things in the house that need doing like ironing, hoovering etc! Although, if he's off building things at least he's out of your way.

If I set a camera up for my pigs, I'd just have hours of footage of them sleeping.

DH set up a webcam on the piggies when we only had two (a long time ago).

Hes suggested a Y-Cam as they do a wi-fi version...

He's bought one.
I thought he was kidding.
I hoped I'd talked him out of it.
But no. It's arrived.
Poor boars won't be able to scratch their bums in peace.
Though I did ask DH "What will you see d'you think?" When they're in the haybox, it's full of hay/straw.
Other than when they mosey to the salad plate...

Oh and DH irons and hoovers.
But I daren't let him loose on too much in the way of house-projects.
(Thinks of the time he decided to replace the bathroom grout with some evil grey gunk )

The reason that DH abandoned his webcam project?

Couldn't see shit in the hay and dark.

Expect your DH to install indoor piggie lighting.
Or buy an infra-red camera next.

This is just the sort of thing DH would do, we have a computerised fish tank and DD1 had an infra- red camera in her cot long before you could buy them.
