How do your piggies sleep?

Ours are normally outdoor piggies but we bought them
Indoors when we got a cold spell...

As they are normally outside i'v never watched them sleep but today i'v seen both of them lying on their sides, eyes open though... I'm not sure if this is normal? One of them looked so sorry for herself I actually thought she was ill!

So how do piggies sleep... Sorry for the strange question!!

I'm not sure mine always slept in a covered box thing!

Mine sleep flat out like pancakes with legs kicked out at the sides. DP caught them once with eyes closed but you have to be INCREDIBLY quiet to catch them- they normally open their eyes when we approach as they are v light sleepers.
Sometimes they sleep in their hidey boxes and sometimes they sleep out in the main cage on a bed of hay.

When mine are inside (in the small bedroom) I put a duvet over their cage to keep them insulated and quiet.
Sometimes when they're being cuddled, GP1 stretches out, head on the side with his eyes open (weird)
GP2 curls up like a little croissant (sweet)

In the summer, GP2 sleeps on the lawn in their run. And GP1 stands guard beside him .

They do get very ruffled though if we catch them sleeping. They don't mind eating their pooh in full view though

Because they are prey animals piggies sleep for short periods, very lightly and yes, weirdly often with their eyes open. You may find an older piggie will close his eyes once he's really confident with you or maybe its just old age.

OB sleeps alot more these days. He half closes his eyes and nodds his chin on his chest almost snoring. His other sort of sleep is his completely still OMG has he died sleep. When we catch him like that, we call his name to wake him, get no answer , then scream at him in panic . Guaranteed to wake him up very startled, poor thing.

70 I miss the standing guard sleeps. OB and his brother used to do that for each other. So sweet .

fortified my little boar started sleeping between the bars of the run and the wooden outdoor house. There was just enough room for him to squeeze in.
Not a good idea, because the magpies took a shine to him, so if he got himself trapped, he'd be too much of a target.
And GP1 couldn't fit there to protect him.
I kept moving the box right next to the bars but they bulldozed it over. And if I left a bigger gap, he saw it as 'his' space.

We had to prod him through the bars to wake him (supposed to be a prey animal GP2)

First time he did it freaked me out. I wondered why he'd taken himself away from GP1.

One of my GPs as a child took herself away from her mum when she died. Her mum jumped out of the cage and I eventually found the daughter pig (she was about 4yo) curled up in their ajoining cage.

Her mum jumped out when I opened the cage to collect them. Jumped onto my lap.
Not jumped out as in escaped

Mine often sleep sort of on their sides, like hairy croissants, but sometimes also on their tummies. Sometimes they sleep in their bedrooms and sometimes out in the open. Yes, eyes are often open. You can tell they are asleep when their ears twitch!

Sometimes they sort of go floppy on your lap and go very flat, when they are really, really relaxed.

Kritiq - your photos have made my day ( clearing up after a week's visitors, washing, ironing, fuming etc) - you have such a lovely collection of pictures of your boys, the one of DBoar 1 ( the fluffy boy?) is absolutely gorgeous...... he is absolutely out of it isn't he? I got another guinea calendar for christmas, and there are two or three good pics, but the guineas look skinny and unhealthy so I am reluctant to use it..... still think one with all these loved pets would be wonderful......

Our girls would sleep on our laps, stretched out, with eyes sort of closed, but made themselves really splodgey and flat - one used to sleep on my whilst the Archers was on and wake up at the end with the theme tune playing - very cross to be woken up after such a short rest. Best of all was in the summer when they would lie in the garden with their ears flapping away with the fairies - you could even hear them snoring!

Oh, yes snoring piggies are ace! :) Thank you for the comments about the photos. I do tend to take rather alot of them (ha!)

Any update on when there might be the pitter patter of tiny feet in the guineapiglet household again?

Ta 4 message, just biding my time at the mo! Still renting, hoping to move in March, once settled will begin my search. Please notice its me who wants the guineas, my kids are too old!!! ( We would love a dog too, but son is just too allergic.) Can't wait!

LittlePig- Eyes open/Squinting and I have caught him with his eyes shut! Normally flat out or if he is on my lap he kind of twists on his side so I can stroke his belly

As a child I used to have one who would sleep on his side on a rug beside the fire in the evening when we let him run round the house. He was very house trained and very friendly. Beat pet I ever had

During the day Smoothpig does the croissant and Scruffypig stretches out. Both close their eyes.

At night I put a blanket over the top of their cage and switch off the lights in their room. We've noticed that as soon as you turn the lights off, they go to bed - each goes into his house! In winter this means that unless I remember to turn the lights on, they go to bed as soon as it goes dark - at 4pm!
