Pig experts come hither and give me your expertise on noises!

Got woken up last night at 4am.
Heard a squeak/chirp type noise. Thought "Wtf is that?!?" .

Firstly i thought it was Hammy in his wheel because it was a regular 'chirp' pause 'chirp' pause.... quite fast ,but then i figured out it was coming from the living room.

It was LittlePig. He was stood on one side of the cage. As soon as I turned the lights on it stopped and he scampered under the hay .

Now, do i worry? I was worried last night. If anyone walks into a room - day or night - the he is up to the bars, feet as high as he can get them looking expectantly for food or squeaking his head off. It is not like him to run away, I tried to coax him out to check he was ok and he wasn't having it. Managed to grab him in the end, and apart from being pissy, hes fine!

Iv'e never heard that noise before, was it a warning noise? Can they sense if something is wrong? It didn't sound like a happy sound but it was a chirp

It sounds like this but it wasn't as fast more like it is in the middle , is that really a happy sound?? What the hell has he got to be so happy about in the middle of the bloody night?

From about 35secs when it slows down is what it was like!

I've never heard my gps making a sound like that. No idea what it could be but the gp in that video seems ok, at least the owners are not bothered.

Chirping is said to be quite rare, and is meant to signify a happy GPig or a slightly unhinged one?!. Some say it sounds like birds which I suppose it does in a way.

I just do not understand why he started in the middle of the bloody night!

Starting to wonder if the reason he scarpered is because i interrupted his song and he got pissed! He is fine today!

Bonkey I had 2 guinea-pigs who chirped (when I was a child).
First time was one of our originals (the sow) when she was heavily pg. We thought What the Jeff because we knew she was near date. It sounded like a trapped bird .
Then , some time later, she sang for a good (5 + ) minutes .It was during the night so not sure how long. This time was sweet and lovely.
Then one of my other sows (who was pg when I got her) did the lovely bird-song.

I would have a stern chat with LittlePig- doing this is well out of order a bit creepy when you first hear it. But it is a beautiful sound .
And why do they choose the early hours of the morning to do it.

Actually - my boars have never done anything so artistic and musical..

BTW does LittlePig know that tomorrow (24th) is the anniversary of the death of Freddie Mercury. Maybe he's possessed

I'm sure he has done it before but it was only brief and I wasn't certain but this time I was very .

I was listening to it for a few minutes trying to figure out wtf it was before I stopped him mid song and it really is a beautiful noise once you know what it is , very very bird-esque! Thats what i though it was originally but common sense kicked in and I realised that there is NO WAY a bird could get in our flat!

We shall have to wait and see if it happens again!

Wow - what an amazing sound! Bonkey despite having many guineas of different shades and types, I have NEVER heard them sing like this - it really is lovely - it sounds like they are imitating birds almost. You should try and record it! Maybe it is a singing they do at night - is he still on his own? May be he was trying to charm Big Pig?, it is really quite haunting, but sounds happy and content.

Ha, funny you should say that guinea i also thought the 'purring' on was a pissed off one.

There are better ones out there but the chirping on this one was very similar to LittlePig!

Yes he's still alone although still very close to BigPig. I'm going to get Christmas out the way and then really try and spend some time getting them back together hopefully . Fingers crossed! they should both be old enough to be passed the arsey stage. BigPig will be one in Jan

I played the guinea sounds to the boys - they were and didn't respond (even to the squeaky baby pig) which I thought was weird.

Then I realised they are Australian cavies and my Essex boars just wouldn't understand them

I played the wheek to them. Both started to go loopy then hid .

Tried the chirp though it might have given LittePig the urge , and they are still both hiding.

My pigs are obviously more intelligent than yours 70 that they can translate the 'Whheeeeekkkk Whheeeeekk' into 'Wheek are going to eat yoooouuu' .

Oh dear LittlePig has his hackles up.....

And I have just noticed...LittlePig is now the same size as BigPig :(

They probably think you've moved a couple more guineas into the family.

GP2 did respond to a video of a male GP who was trying to woo a female.
GP2 obviously thought the male pig was chatting him up (and he wasn't averse either)

I think most other GPs are more intelligent than my boars- DD always says they are "not the sharpest tools in the shed"

I actually think LittlePig is very scarily intelligent for a pig.

The way he manages to do stupid things without hurting himself, the way he knows the difference between a salad bag and other bags not crisps however , he can even tel the bloody time!

BigPig is either piggy stupid or just lazy....

I guess it must be like with humans, some more 'sharp' than others, I had a succession of lazy, docile ( but very loving) girls, and a manic rescue girl, who was so intelligent, (she was the one who arrived in the cage full of broken glass and fag ends) - she was toilet trained, made noises to boss everyone around all the time, was pretty agressive to start with ( who wouldnt be after living in such a cage?), but was very easy to train, got all the girls rounded up at 'tea time', squeaked indignantly if they werent in bed at the same time every night - but never a chirp like this.

Ah, I've heard of chirping pigs, but never actually heard one, even on the net. I had thought it was only sows that chirped.

When I played it, DBoar 2 stopped, propped up on his front legs, tilted his head and listened intently. I'd have loved to know what was going on in his little head.

my dd looked this up and says that it indicates distress and stress and is accompanied by the gp shaking all over.

How anyone finds out for sure what these noises mean is beyond me though.

ZZZ I think if you look at them whilst they make the noise and take into account what they are doing at the time - you can get a pretty good idea. Example 'Whheeeeek Whheeeek' when the fridge door opens, followed by hyper popcorning pigs usually means 'Gimme food NOW!!!' A rumble when you touch there bum means 'get off you bitch'

Re. the 'chirping' ,no shaking going on here. He was just stood, head up....well...chirping . BigPig was silent and seemed quite content to listen. I notice that when my two are scared then they both wheek and go defensive, but a different wheek from the 'Gimme food' one.

When my 2 sows 'birdsonged' (as I said it was years ago, they were the two pigs we had that were mum pigs).
They didn't do it at the same time, but both stood the same- heads pointed right up, noses to the ceiling.

Not any distress at all, no shaking. They were remarkably steady.
Just no idea why .
Or the need to do it in the small hours.

I have just wasted a lot of time listening to all the noises and don't entirely agree with all the interpretations, but my piggies have been joining in and quite happily chatting along. They don't sing though - do I have tone deaf ones?
