I posted about my 3yr old girly pig having mites... Well, dispute having all her treatment she still has really really rough skin on her rump. Shouldn't this have gone by now?

She seems fine in herself so am I worrying about nothing?

If she's had her treatment and if it's okay to wash her , why not treat her to a Gorgeous Guinea melt ( IIRC you dissolve it and use it as a prewash) .
Is your pig indoors? I'm not washing the boys at the moment because they are out still. When they come in, I'll do it.

They do a souffle cream you could try on the dry bits if you can't wash her.

Is she feeling better?

(I might give the little ratbags a bath on Saturday morning and make them stay in all day i think.
They are starting to smell a bit boary and GP1s greasespot has to be quickcleaned with baby wipes.
Trouble is he sees this as some kind of mating ritual and gets a bit mouthy (ie bitey but not actual biting)
I fear for the little boy if GP1 decides to jump him)

Hi 70 I think she is feeling better... She spears ok in herself but when we were having cuddles tonight her rump just feels awful - possibly worse than before I took her to the vets.

If she's been treated she cant still have them surely?

Think baths are in order - they are still outside at the mo while I bid on indoor cages on eBay!

Just bought them in For cuddles and while stroking her she appears to have a massive bite wound on her side... The skin is attached but you can move it iyswim!

God I don't know what to do!!!

Has she been attacked by anything else, or does it look like the mite bites she had earlier - there isnt another animal involved? I would get her back to the vet asap to look at it, ideally a guinea-savvy vet, it doesnt sound like the problem has been solved if she is still uncomfortable. Try and ease the wound, you can use very mild salt water to just cleanse the wound, and depending how severe, even a very dilute antiseptic, although human antiseptics should not really be used on their delicate skins, but if you think it is infected it may do for now, until she can be seen professionally, bless her. Definately hasn't been attacked by anything else - it looks like a mite bite but just big. I still have some mite medicine left over shall I give her more or is there anything that can overdose them on iykwim?!

We have literally no spare money til payday which is end of the month.

Zombie - if she's got a wound (and it's a self inflicted) she could well still be scratching herself (and unfortunately they can scratch themselves raw. My GP when I was 9 used to scratch & scream, but still scratch. )

If you've still got the mite treatment (were you given Ivermectin?) you can safely do 3 doses (I had a Google search and this was a USA site I found).
It doesn't work on the eggs according to site, so you kill the adults then you have to kill the newbies (Gawd it's like flipping headlice)

I'd put Vaseline on the scratched area, to soothe and stop her digging jer little nails in.

Other considerations:
Hormonal- if there's hair loss
Fungal / Ringworm - can co-incide with mites.

If the skin is very dry, it's more likely to be itchy and split. Then there's a wound for them to nibble at.

Some GPs carry a mite population that takes hold when the pig is stressed.

The hay is particulary bad at the moment- I don't know how they are harvesting and drying it, but it's not soft.

Scurvey can also cause hair loss and affect skin quality. Is she having enough Vit C ? (Either in her diet or supplemented)

I have to take her to the vet this morning. She has a wound and it's big and bleeding. :( we so don't have the money for this right now!

Didnt know that about the treatment! Maybe it is the eggs hatching...

Got antibiotics ... She also has the beginning of an ulcer in her eye.

Wish I could make her better :(

Oh, poor guinea!

Has she had something damage her eye? (Hay or a scratch)?
Have they given you probiotics to go with the antibiotics?

What did your vet say about her skin?

Lots of cuddles and guinea cossetting (with nice bribey food ) will be on tap methinks.

70 do you remember someone on here put her pig in a sock? I'm thinking of doing that for her? The wound is not nice at all.

Yes, the Pig In a Sock was SockPig - unfortunately most of it was on Chat so it'll be deleted by now.

SockPigs mum did a follow up post about 3 weeks ago on here.
She used baby socks with leg holes cut in to give a nice snug fit.

Eye problems can also be due to tooth problems- did the vet look in her mouth (I know you said she's eating which is a good sign, but my greedy pig GP1 manages to trough everything but the barn door even with 2 broken bottom teeth)
Usually its the back ones which are hard to see.

Make sure your piggle doesn't get dehydrated, you might need to use a plastic syringe (Pets @Home and The Range sell feeding syringes or your chemist might have them).
If she doesn't eat, try mashed up pellets with water or better still, Critical Care food- available online or your vet)

Ok, have given her all the medicine and she seems to be happy! She is eating very happily and having cuddles I have no idea how to do the sock idea!!

Have also checked her teeth and all look good! I hope she is on the mend from now on.. Thank you so much for your advice as always 70 :)

Hi again, hope she is doing OK - I think the sock idea is brilliant, she will be warm and snug but not able to make her wound worse, so hope it works out - make sure she tries to drink even via a syringe, and if she is getting lots of attention she will like it. Hope the new sockpig is comfortable and that she manages a good nights sleep with it on!

Iv put her in the hutch and she is keeping it on so far. Just went out to put a snuggle pad in their sleeping compartment... Never gave a piggy antibiotics before! That was fun! NOT! She did let me do her eye drops with no fuss though when rewarded with the leaves off the cauliflower we had for dinner!

She won't keep the sock on... Any ideas of anything else to try?

IIRC SockPigs mum got the smallest sock that she could put on without cutting of vital blood supply

and cut front leg/back leg holes.

They can wriggle out of things, and when they know the sock is immenent they can fight like wildcats.

I tried bandage and tissues on my boar when I was 9 yo (he had stress excema).
Ten minutes spend applying the bandage lovingly.
Ten seconds for him to wriggle out and leave it on the floor while he danced about naked .

Well antibiotics administered and sock put back on... Wound is looking a little better so she must have kept her sock on for at least some of the day!

Her eye is looking better and she has only had 3 doses of her medicine :)

Fingers crossed she is on the mend. She is on my lap now eating broccoli....
