My darling girls passed away in the night - both of them - they were cold when I went to feed them this morning, nothing had got to them, no lumps or bumps - just suddenly gone.. laid side by side in a little hay "nest" as always.

I feel empty and bereft, I knew they were old and were slowing down and losing weight, so it was bound to come sooner rather than later, but still ........

did not tell the girls before school, so I have that "joy" to come tonight - they have grown up with them - they were 12 .... the oldest piggies in town.....
Sad Sad Sad

That's very sad, but touching as well, that they died together.
Twelve is an amazing age. They must have been very healthy and happy to have thrived for so long. So sorry you are feeling sad. It's not surprising, when they have been part of your life for so long.

Really sorry to hear your news, what a sad day for your all, and bless your guineas, how amazing that they went together -this is something to comfort your kids with, that one wasnt left alone - it might be that it got cold very quickly for them, but I have never heard of guineas living to be so old, they must have had an amazingly cared for and loved life, and this is what we would all want for our dear pets - we marked ours with special stones and little poems for each of them when they finally left us - it is a sad rite of passage, I still miss ours even after a year of the last one dying. Sending you kind thoughts.

BonkeyMollocks · 12/09/2012 16:25

:(
So sad.

12 is a grand age for a piggy, and while its sad, its lovely that they went together. I can't imagine how one would feel losing their friend of 12 years.

Hope your girls are ok.

R.I.P piggies! :(

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/09/2012 17:27

so Sad ByTheWay - it's heartbreaking to see a thread that a piggie has passed.
12 is a fantastic age, your pigs have outlived any other I've ever heard of.

And for them both to go together, safe and warm in their own familiar territory , in their sleep- that's what you'd wish for as a GP owner.

Sad for your DD when she finds out too.

ByTheWay1 · 12/09/2012 17:28

oh - I've got tears in my eyes now - thank you for such lovely words -

it is lovely that they went together, and just passed away, not needing the vet or anything. The girls are distraught, but they knew they were old for piggies and are sort of comforted by the fact they went together.

We are trying to decide what to do with them and will probably sort something out at the weekend....

12 is legendary. What an amazingly happy and healthy life they must have had. What were their names?

OatyBeatie · 12/09/2012 17:50

When you feel ready, take a look at the hilarious guinea pig memorial poetry thread in Mumsnet classics

Odes to Threadworm's guinea pig is one of my all-time favourite threads Oatie Smile.

Mumsnet at its finest.

Do have a little look ByTheWay. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will help you through the hard times, etc.

ByTheWay1 · 13/09/2012 09:07

Thanks all, it is nice to fell "hugged" by everyone - my little piggies were Sparky/Sparkie - 12 years and we never decided the spelling!! - and Cuddles.

So sorry - so many good points to remember tho after 12 years. And neither of them got know the loneliness of being the one left behind.

I still tear up remembering any of our GPs. Allow yourselves to have a good cry - then think of the silly things they did and smile......

Shesparkles · 13/09/2012 09:52

Aww you poor thing...Although 12 is a fantastic age for a piggie, it makes it all the harder when they do go-you must have given them a fantastic life to have lived so long. As others have said, it's good for them that they went together.
We lost ours in the summer and I miss them badly. Be kind to yourself, they were part of the family x

ByTheWay1 · 14/09/2012 21:11

We had a little "funeral" with our DDs - found a nice place where the dog and any foxes can't dig, said our goodbyes and my girls sprinkled rose petals all around. Was lovely... they were indeed a part of the family...

Love the "odes" thread....

Methe · 14/09/2012 21:19

that poems thread has just made me spray my laptop with bacardi and coke..

Methe · 14/09/2012 21:21

but obv in my mourning, i hid the mirth well.

noyouhavehadawee · 14/09/2012 21:36

bytheway1 i think its started being custom to add a relevant poem to the poem thread when ones pig passes

sleepingbunnies · 14/09/2012 22:29

12 years is so so long!

I would be comforted by the fact they went together - I remember you giving me advice on a thread the other day and I was astounded by the age of your girls!

RIP

xx

noyouhavehadawee · 15/09/2012 17:28

we gave ours extra hay and cuddles today. i hope they rock on till they are 12 - halfway there...

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 15/09/2012 17:31

TWELVE!!! Wow. Impressed. If I tell DH that I think he might faint. Our oldest is 7.

fortifiedwithtea · 16/09/2012 01:27

RIP little piggies. So sad after 12 years they certainly were part of your family.

12 must be a world record, and to have two shows what a wonderful piggie Mum you are. Makes me think I should stop calling my boar Old Boy. He won't be 6 until December.

ByTheWay1 · 16/09/2012 08:03

LOL - thanks all - you do make me laugh - never thought 12 was that impressive - we have neighbours with piggies who are over 10, our new neighbour had one that reached 13 - so no not a record! must be the good Cotswold waters....

Mind you - I always thought that they would hang around for 6 or 7 years and that would be it. (if my hubby had known it would be 12 I think he may have fainted too!!)

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 16/09/2012 09:02

The world record is 15 I believe.

feelinghopeful · 16/09/2012 22:23

Adding my thoughts too. Always so hard to lose much loved pets and I know you'll all always remember them. They bring so much to a family don't they. I hope you're all doing ok. :(
