Woke up this morning and found my beloved Blondie pig had died in the night

I am absolutely beside myself with grief. I was cuddling her late last night and she was her beautiful big personality self. There was nothing wrong with her as I checked her over because I was a bit worried because one of the other pigs was staying with her all the time which was a bit unusual and Blondie wanted to be with her sister all the time too. We think she was 5 although she could have been older as we got her from someone who could no longer look after their pigs

Oh silver that is so sad Sad.

I remember your thread about Blondie pig when she wasn't eating.And if there was anything amiss they were straight to the vet or Vedra. I admire your DH driving Blondie off the the vet that day (it was a weekend IIRC)

5 is a good age for a GP (and as you say she could've been older)

You know your guineas have a brilliant life. Happy, chatty, looked after (some might say spoiled, but we know you can never spoil a guinea-pig, they deserve it) Wink

They know when it's time to go.It's a shock to come downstairs and find them dead and it's sad to have them die in your arms (both has happened to me).But you know she had a peaceful end, in her cage with her friends.

Thanks for your lovely messages. I have a Blondie pig shaped hole in my heart at the moment. It is the price we pay for loving these little creatures so much but I would not change a minute of the time I had with her for the world. I had her for 2 years. We are going to bury her tonight.

I have changed and disinfected everything just in case she had the beginnings of an illness. I have spoken to our GP savvy vet and am taking my other two for a checkup this afternoon just in case. They are both very quiet but eating and moving around.

Silver I feel your pain I have tears in my eyes reading your post. Guineas pigs do grieve so your other pigs will be quiet today. They were saying their goodbyes yesterday.

I remember when Old Boy's brother died of cancer. I laid him next to OB who instantly did a huge wee. Then he licked his brother's face, bum (vom) and his newest cancer lump which you couldn't even see unless you stroked him. We had the orginal lump removed which gave him an extra 8 months. Lastly OB tried to nudge his brother to his feet, gave him a final lick and walked away. So sad Sad.

Sounds like Blondie had a lovely peaceful end with her own kind and you can't hope for better than that for these adorable creatures.

:( rip blondie it is really sad.
My guinea pig died this morning, I was very upset.
He wasn't himself yesterday evening and was going to take him to the vets today.
Anyway, I woke at 6 to use the toilet and went to check on him - we keep our piggies indoors. He was laying on his side breathing rapidly so I wrapped him in a blanket and sat down and held him. Went to make a cup of tea about 8ish and he was the same, left him wrapped on the sofa. I came to pick him up about 15 mins later and he'd just gone. I was really sad he'd gone while I'd left him on his own :(

His little cage mate looks all lost and lonely now.

Piggies don't do well in the heat, mine are in an outbuilding between 10 am and 6pm, I put them in a shady outside run early morning and evening. Bring them in for the night around 9pm.
They seem livelier inside, with their indoor run.
I'm sorry for your loss, I've always thought of my piggies as ideal tribbles. Stress relievers that purr.

Dilly so sorry to hear about your piggie RIP Dilly Pig. I was upset that I was not with Blondie when she died. Both piggies are really upset.

Thanks for your lovely posts. 70 I did think about the heat but we have blackout blinds and curtains in our lounge where the pigs live and I have kept them drawn for the last few days which has kept the room a comfortable temperature. We also have wooden floors which means it is the coolest room in the house. Yesterday I had the French windows open so a breeze came through the curtains. I am just wondering if even a slight rise in temperature can push a piggie that is not well over the edge.

There is something weird about this as LouLou Pig was insisting on cuddling Blondie last night. They were both inseparable this week. Do you think GPs can sense that there friend is not well? Vet thought it could be an ovarian cyst or an internal cyst that burst. She is lovely a real GP person. She checked their temperature, skin, eyes, respiration and heart, all ok but she said to keep a close eye on them for the next few days.

Hi silver how are your other 2 GPs faring?
They must be a bit lost and "Where is she"?

But I've noticed myself that GPs tend to herd together and know when one is ill.

The main comfort is your Blondie pig had a good life, company, love and good food.
That's really what they want and that's really what they deserve,

As you said in previous postings, the tragedy is ,not all GPs get even a basic level of care.

They don't ask for much out of life TBH.

Hi 70 they are a bit better today but still very depressed. They are used to living in a 3 or 4 so I think they are missing the action they are used to. I have left a message at our local GP rescue asking if they would consider us for one GP but now DH thinks 2 more would be better, which is what I wanted in my heart. This idea had to come from him as he said he could not cope losing another GP. He was in tears and said he could not handle burying another beloved GP. However, now I think he sees things the same as me, that we give our GPs everything they need and so much love and that it is worth it as you can make a difference if your GPs are rescue pigs. Of course your heart will be broken when they go but I am happy to pay that price.

You are so right about GPs not asking for much. They are the loveliest little creatures on this earth in my opinion.

Hope your GPs are happier today. My remaining 2 have perked up a bit today but I have been giving them their favourite strawberry tops :)

What a sad thread today, so sorry to hear about all these lovely guineas - but it is so lovely to know that they have been much loved and had good lives - all we could ask for. I am sure they know when their friends are ill, and like to give comfort and support, they are very protective of each other, and thats why we love these sweet, gentle souls. - All ours have had distinct personalities, and it is surprising how much you miss them - hope you will all decide to get some rescue guineas once you feel ready, there is always a squeaky person who needs a good home.
