Moving to Bahamas ..... Should we take our guinea pigs?

We are going next month. I have got them an Import Permt from Bahamian government so that is cool.

I think we can send them with BA world cargo, hopefully on same flight as us.

Now it is coming to it thou, not so sure. it will cost £900!!!!

Kids would probably be fine if we re-homed them and have found a family who want them. Wierdly it is me that seems to want to take them most. I imagine they will be a comfort for the kids when everything else is new and different.

Do you think they would survive ok. They are 2 and a half.

No, they will hate it, and it is a barmy amount of money.

£900?! Buy new guinea pigs when you get there.

It's a very long way on a plane for very small creatures.

don't take them. if the kids are cool with it then rehome them. we emigrated to USA brought out cat, rehomed our ducks. guinea pigs don't live long enough for this to be viable. just my humble opinion.

£900 is Ridiculous. Maybe you are projecting your worry about the kids settling in onto the guinea pigs?

The climate will be completely different.

I know GPs originate from hot/dry cold/dry Peru, but native guineas and domestic guineas are quite different.

I don't think my boys (1 chubby ,one very fluffy) would adapt.

Leave them with the family and maybe give a donation (from the £900 you would have paid) to a Guinea rescue in the UK?

Just re home them to a lovely family.

The plane journey would most likely stress them out. If they survive that (have you seen how they transport animals on planes :( ) then they have to adjust to a new climate.

Imo it would be cruel to put a small furry through any of that.

Buy the kids a teddy for comfort!

Flum - it is lovely that you love your GPs so much that you are happy to pay £900 to fly them over to the Bahamas. They are lucky pigs to be loved so much when we hear of GPs at the bottom of gardens forgotten about etc. However, completely agree with 70. Giving your GPs to a GP rescue with some money would ensure they get a brilliant home and also help the GP rescue out.

I would be careful about rehoming them with people you know as they may end up being a 5 minute wonder. You need to be sure of the commitment. GP rescues are very careful about who has the GPs and if the people get fed up the GP rescue want the GPs returned to them.

Hi - I would agree with everyone else - it is a hard decision to leave your pets behind if they are much loved, I am not sure I could do it! However this all sounds a bit too stressful for simple little guineas who just want a quiet life of food,rest and play. - Do go with the recommendation of others, find a good guinea rescue, and give them a generous donation, unless you have friends/contacts who would really look after them and not as a default option - somewhere where they will get the input they have with you. Hope all goes well - not sure where you live, would love to have them!!! :O
