Stinky pig!!

Over the last few days I have noticed that Big pigs side of the pen stinks.
I clean them out twice a day, more since I have noticed 'the smell'.

I am already protecting them from dhs evil stare..any ideas??

I think its his pee .
Its very dark and concentrated. Is this normal?
Little pigs pee is the same but he doesn't smell as bad

Fine in himself otherwise.

Should add that Big pig himself, doesn't smell any worse than normal.
I can still cope with him sat under my chin

They need more fluid by the sounds of things.
Cucumber, washed grass, watermelon (mine don't drink) but it keeps them hydrated.

And I use Catsan under newspaper when they are indoors.

GP1 does little deposits of wee round the Pighouse- different to a normal pig pee.

Maybe it's their Territoty Marking Pee that smells more.

Are either of your boys squealey or hunched up when they pee?

There's a link on the GP Vegetables thread that gives you the calcium levels of fruit and veg (My GP1 would arm wrestle his mother for the last bit of parsley, but it has to be limited to "a couple of sprigs, 2-3 times a week) .

I wonder too if my daily cleaning sends GP1 into overdrive. (TBH I couldn't leave it more than a day ,I don't give them a really deep bed, enough to eat/play in.There's always plenty left. But the wee puddles !!)
He maybe sees it as a challenge "Ah, she's trying to wipe out every trace of The Mighty Chester, I must replenish my smell, mmmmmm"

It seems to be just in their playpen that the smell is. Have Megazorb/Newspaper/hay in the cage , seems to sort that out. Only newspaper on the floor.

They are both drinkers, may up the cucumber intake for a few days see of that helps.

No squealing or hunching for pees .

Maybe that's what Big pig is thinking, "Hmm, she cleans up much mess....so I will just.make some more" . Maybe the bugger thinks its fun

Thing is I darent leave it because it smells!!! Vicious circle!

Any ideas on neutralising the odour ? I have purposely bought some redi grass for them to much in a attempt to mask the smell.

Dh is currently giving them the evils .

I found the Catsan or Silicon Cat Litter was the best thing to kill their whiff.
If it works on cat pee, I thought (and cat pee is pretty rank)

I used to change the paper and hay every day and the litter lasted a week or so (scoop out the wee patches).
IIRC the silicone stuff was meant to last a month (for cats) you just remove and replace any manky bits.

I know some people use the litter on it's own. I give them BioCatlet (because it's soft paper pellets) by itself but the Catsan is sharp on their baby feet.And I wouldn't want them to eat the silicone stuff.

GP2 smells lush after his bath. Even when he puts his little bum under my neck.
Shame it hasn't stopped his gas though

I'm convinced GP1 has a seperate special little bladder.
We put them in the clean Pighouse from the run ( only a couple of hours run time today). GP1 could have wee'd at any time, but he still had enough tucked away to leave a little Pig Puddle. (His usual pee is a good tablespoonful though it feels like a pint when he pees on me )

Well, it's been hot and sticky and I've found my boars need to be cleaned out more than normal or the living room starts to smell like a barn. So, it could just be normal "ripe" wee smell.

However, when a boar is feeling a bit, um "fruity," they I think their wee tends to have a more, um "manly" odour, iyswim. It may be that Big Pig is getting in the mood, even without the opportunity to do anything about it.

If he's not showing any signs of infection (squeeking or hunkering when weeing, blood in urine - not just urine that's dark and a bit reddish or white when it dries - what I mean is "frank" blood on the bedding or papers,) then it's probably not that. But, you can get urinalysis testing strips on the interwebs to test a bit and the correct values can be found on the Guinea Lynx site I think.

(No, you don't have to give him a little pot to "give a sample" into :) - I tend to put them in a plastic box until they do a wee, then dip the strip in - not sterile, but it will show up blood or protein, which could be signs of problems.)

More water, yes, more water may help. Give him some in a syringe as well to "top up" the levels. Some pigs are big drinkers, some aren't. That's just the piggie way!

Failing that, have you thought of a plug in?

Not been too bad today. Been a tad cooler so maybe thats it. Im going to do a major scrub down tomorrow.

Dh threatened to put them in a cooking pot if they smell much more ! Grumpy bastard.

Will have a look for those pee test strips KRITIQ , will be handy to have in the first aid box!

Be careful with plug-ins near animals though (there was a thread a while back about Yankee Candles killing birds. I know birds and mammels have completely different respiratory systems but I wouldn't take chances. Though I do burn YC in the kitchen and my chaps were stinking out living in the dining room last winter. Kitchen/diner open plan)

Don't let your DH give them any 'flavouring herbs' like tarragon (it goes well with chicken and GPs taste like chicken. Not first hand knowledge here- vegetarian).Or red wine and garlic in their water bottles (GP coq-au-vin)

Your little boys might just be going through another phase of their adolescence. Hopefully a short phase

Plug in is in the hallway, i purposefully waft abit when I walk past! The only place I could put one in the living room is right next to their cage and I think thats too close, I don't want them getting poorly would help the smell though

Funny thing about husbands, they never smell when something has gone off in the bin and needs lugging outside . However, abit of wee odour and the odd poo stuck to their foot and they are right grumpy bastards.

When I gave the hogs their bath, DD and I put them on the bathroom floor while we got the towels ready.
They were sooo sweet- because they didn't know where they were, they sat side by side, nose-to-rump,( like the Ying& Yang sign) like they were watching each others' backs.
