Need to rehome my guine pigs

Feel like shit. :( I feel like such a bitch. Have 1yr old male GPs, brothers. They are lovely, so friendly, very tame, let children hold them/stroke them. I developed asthma last year (possibly due to them?!) and now its getting worse. Realised that when I am in house sitting near GPs I start to wheeze. In past 2 weeks been nebulized and on courses of steroids and 3 inhalers, numerous hosp and dr visits. Sitting beside them now I have chest pain and tightness and whistleywheeze thing going on. They live indoors - previously had an indoor rabbit no probs. Have a communal garden but lots of crime/trouble makes roam about all our communal gardens and they would not be safe out there.

How can I make sure they go to a good home? Ideally a family home where will get lots of attention like they do now.

Whatever you do, don't advertise them on gumtree/ freeads etc, especially not stating "free to good home"

Worth speaking to your local vet- they may know some piggy lovers who might be amenable to taking them on, and at least you would then know that they are good owners.

If no joy with that, are there any children's farms and the like around you (good ones!)? We have a lovely little park farm that has about ten guineas in a fab and roomy enclosure, with a little brick house. They all seem very tame and well-fed and happy.

I have also seen older guineas and rabbits up for adoption in our big pet store. If I was considering a pet like that, I would always look there first.

Whereabouts are you, btw? I would be happy to take them for you if you're near Glasgow area and desperate! I'm a vet, and have dogs and rabbits (although obviously not together!), so I'm well experienced with pigglies, and the kids would love them!

I'd take them but I have just checked your profile and you are miles from Hertfordshire! Ask your children's friends. They are ideal first pets and I'm sure someone would love them. Hope you find someone soon.

Just checked your profile (never thought of that- doh!) and you are in Scotland! I would take them in a heartbeat, but stupidly mentioned it to Big Mean DH and he says NO! . He says I have enough animals (what a stupid thing to say!) but do let me know if you can't find anyone- it may be that I might let the idea slip out to the dc (just by accident ) and DH may find the constant pestering overwhelming......

Thanks hocus. jooly I am in Glasgow! Text everyone I know and put it on my facebook. Posted on here and NM local boards. seen pets at home have adoption centre, but worry about who they go to - what happens if home not found! They are so friendly and noisey interactive!

Have you explored the rescue centres near you? Most take small animals too. There is a place called Thistle Cavies in Fife which might help you if you got in touch with them. They specialise in guinea pigs.

Please make sure your piggies go to a GP Rescue. It is the only way to guarantee they will go to a good home. GP Rescues are very strict about who is allowed to adopt one of their pigs.

Can you contact April Lodge in Kent and they may know a gp rescue place in Scotland.
