@TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack Oh wow - well done!

Actually realised there was a typo in my post - I've been smoking 37 years!

My mum was a smoker, she died a couple of weeks ago from a build up of plaque and cholesterol in her arteries and although I've seen the cholesterol health warning on my fag packets for years, something clicked.

I'm really looking forward to being free from cigarettes!

farleysrusks · 15/11/2024 17:26

MozartsMothballs, hope you'll come back and let us know how you get on. You sound so excited for a positive change: freedom awaits you!

Coffeenbiscuit · 15/11/2024 17:29

Yes! I was a very heavy, properly addicted smoker for 10 years. After finishing the book I haven't touched another since. It's been 9 years now! Just follow the book exactly to the letter. Good luck!

ChaosHol1 · 15/11/2024 17:38

Oh I've just downloaded to my kindle after seeing this. Wanted to stop vaping since my mum died last year and they said vaping for ten years could of contributed to her oesophagael cancer. I promised her I'd stop and haven't managed to yet. Fingers crossed

Definitely will!

I can't believe our local council is funding it - the seminar is usually £379, but the county council is offering fully funded places.

Gummibärchen · 15/11/2024 18:21

Best of, @MozartsMothballs - it's fantastic that the seminar places are being funded. It's actually a very good use of council funds; their ROI will be high. I would certainly have signed up for the seminar, but gave the book a go in the first instance, and it worked.

I stopped smoking 20 years ago using the Allan Carr book. I smoked maybe 10 to 15 cigarettes a day then, and more on nights out.

Haven't smoked since. There have been maybe a handful of occasions when I've thought "wonder if I'd like a cigarette just now?" But almost immediately pushed it away. I'm just not interested and been since I finished the book.

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/11/2024 18:33

Its a brilliant book and worked for me.
I still think about the nicotine monster trying to control me 20 years on

Good luck OP - make sure you smoke that last ciggie even though you might not want to when the time comes

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/11/2024 18:34

I was "pack at day" more at weekends

Third day without a cigarette. I'm not even missing them. I've got some fag ends in a little box and every so often I'll take a whiff of them and feel glad that I no longer smell like that.

viktoria · 24/11/2024 14:35

I stopped smoking with the Alan Carr book ...about 30 years ago.
I remember bring full of best intentions and reading it... and then getting a bit bored with being so good. So I looked at the content Page and it had one chapter called
"Reasons to keep on smoking" and I went to that page.
Which was blank
I initially literally thought they had made a mistake when the book was printed... and then felt very quickly very stupid.
And stopped smoking - as mentioned by previous posters - the book changed my attitude from "giving up something" to actually "gaining freedom"
Best of luck

Gummibärchen · 24/11/2024 14:44

Great news @MozartsMothballs ! Well done on quitting and thank you for updating us.

viktoria · 24/11/2024 19:04

@MozartsMothballs well done!
The first couple of weeks are probably the hardest. And you are already half wat through your first.
I have never met anybody who said "I wish I hadn't stopped smoking".

farleysrusks · 24/11/2024 20:32

Wonderful update, thank you.
I found that it just took time to get used to my new daily routine, without the need for nicotine punctuating my day and dragging me down.

GlobalCitz · 24/11/2024 20:34

Did Alan Carr (albeit the one afternoon session in person) and haven't smoked in 12 years.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 15/11/2024 13:44

I read the book over 22 years ago and haven't smoked since. He really does demolish all the reasons you think you have for smoking. It doesn't make you feel good or remove boredom or relieve stress. It just damages your health and costs a load of money.

It's self hypnosis and it works. I used to smoke 40 Silk Cut ultra low a day, minimum.

Honestly apart from the brand, Marlboro lights, you could be me. I stopped 22 years ago as well. It really helps to reprogram your brain so you don’t reach for that crutch, whatever it might be cigarettes, vaping, food. I think you have to read it with an open mind and if you do have a slip, reread it. It’s ok to make mistakes just keep working at it till it sinks in.

JobMatch3000 · 24/11/2024 20:48

I didn't even finish the alcohol one and I've not had a drink in 11 months. I didn't know about the sugar one. I might read that one too.

Purpleavocado · 24/11/2024 20:50

Worked for me 30 years ago! Had to read it a few times. Never smoked since.

FuckThePoPo · 25/11/2024 12:58

@viktoria thats the thing - it's not hard at all! I was excited to be a non smoker and never ever felt I was missing out

ienjoyeatingcake · 26/11/2024 13:21

Hey everyone, didn't realise this thread had been so active! 🤣

So my update is I haven't vaped for 61 days, since I had my last one while reading the Allen Carr book. I can't even tell you how easy it's been, and how bloody happy I feel every time I think about it.

I was nervous about socialising, and just had quite a social weekend - out both nights, and in particular the second night I was in a situation (sitting around drinking) where I would always vape/smoke a lot. But I didn't! And it wasn't even hard!

If Allen Carr was still alive today he would deserve to be knighted, the lives he's saved ❤️

@ienjoyeatingcake it's my fifth day smoke free. It's the longest I've ever gone without a cigarette. I'm loving it. I can't believe how much money I'm saving too - no longer spending £15 a day to kill myself. Jeez what a mug I was.

Well done on your 61 days - that's brilliant.

Gummibärchen · 26/11/2024 22:35

Thank you for starting this thread and for the update on your success, @ienjoyeatingcake - I fully agree, if he were alive, Allen Carr would have merited a knighthood. As it is, I've added to his brand recognition by telling everyone about the method - my very visible weight loss speaks for itself!
@ChaosHol1 did you get around to starting the book?

well done!!!! How marvellous

You've just taken me back 25 years or so - I remember the first few days I was nicotine free (post finishing the Carr book) I really felt like I had been released from an invisible cage. I practically skipped everywhere with a stupid grin for weeks.

I did have a tendancy to drink faster when socialising - not sure if that is a common reaction but look out for it!
