Sugar

It’s embarrassing and ridiculous, but I am addicted to sugar. Had a massive binge yesterday, ate 100g of sweets, massive slice of cake, a pack of cookies and a scone with jam and cream. Now getting night sweats and massive energy slumps. I’ve been addicted to alcohol in the past, and the feeling of cravings is similar. The buck stops here. Please help support me and join me if you wish. This is day one on my sugar free journey.

I have not eaten any chocolate cake, even when cutting a piece for someone else. 😫

@FatGirlTriesAgain23 I'm sorry you're having a hard time. I don't know what the solution is, but angry sounds better than guilty at least.

Lazyi · 04/03/2023 06:28

@FatGirlTriesAgain23 .. sorry to hear you had such a shit day. How does 80g of chocolate compare to past binges? Dunno about you, but I could probably eat a chocolate bar, and then go back for another, along with a few packs of fruit pastels. Anything you want to talk about with your shit day?

I’ve been lucky enough to cut down in stress, I think if I was still living with the amount of stress I was feeling 2 years ago, this would all be even harder.

thinking of you

Had a brilliant “sugar free” binge the other night of bread and marge, dried fruit and cream…. Technically “added sugar” free, but not really in the apirit of the challenge !

@fivetriangulartrees well done with the chocolate cake! Was it a struggle?

@Lazyi The stress is ongoing, occasionally overwhelming if I dwell on it, most days I can hold it at bay. I'm the world's worst for procrastinating, but less sugar is keeping my emotions steadier. Things are improving. Thanks for asking 🙂

In the past a binge would be a massive bar of chocolate, two packets of biscuits, a small cake or a packet of kipling-type cakes. Hot chocolate or coffee with full fat milk for dunking. Fall asleep for two hours, then be hungover for the rest of the day. Gulp down loads of diet coke for waking up.

This time, along with the 80g chocolate, I managed to give the aisle of cakes and biscuits a swerve, and bought six very soft squidgy rolls and had half with healthy fillings and half with marmalade. I was quite pleased about that. Just a month ago it would have been cakes and sweets. A bit of a success!

fivetriangulartrees · 06/03/2023 07:17

@FatGirlTriesAgain23 How interesting that you're seeing a positive effect on your procrastination. That's a great benefit.

The chocolate cake wasn't a struggle, just a bit disappointing. In fact, I was so relaxed about it, I forgot I was avoiding sugar, had a big sugary pudding in the pub and didn't even realise what I'd done until 3 hours later.

Day 1 starts again here...

Lazyi · 06/03/2023 15:46

@FatGirlTriesAgain23 … that’s a massive difference. I don’t really do calories, but say you did 1000 Cala instead of 5000, that’s wonderful progress

How are you all doing?

FatGirlTriesAgain23 · 11/03/2023 09:53

Hello 😃 @fivetriangulartrees I'm finally surfacing after the most awful head cold, with a throat that felt as though it had been sandpapered. Most of the time I've been drinking hot orange juice and sucking huge amounts of cough sweets. Now I can't stand the idea of those, so I should be able to get back on the wagon over the next couple of days.

fivetriangulartrees · 12/03/2023 12:00

Hope you're feeling better today @FatGirlTriesAgain23 .

I cocked up yesterday. The "voices" in my head convinced me it was perfectly ok, in fact virtually a moral obligation, to eat a Twix, which turned into two Twixes, a packet of biscuits and a gingerbread man, FFS. At least I'm not doing that every day atm though. Starting again today.

FatGirlTriesAgain23 · 12/03/2023 19:49

Today was difficult because I'm now ravenously hungry. I ordered in from JustEat and ate jam sandwiches on lovely soft white bread and drank pints of hot tea. I also had a sweet flapjack and two chocolate eclairs. It would have been much worse in the past, but it's not that great.

Tomorrow I should feel much better, and back on the wagon.

Lazyi · 13/03/2023 17:29

Hi all. I am doing pretty well…. Hilights and low points recently:

Highlights: couldn’t find 100% choc, so bought 90% choc. It actually tasted too sweet, like when you drink a cup of coffee with sugar in and you don’t take sugar.
Today is day 50 of “no” added sugar… obviously I have had a tiny bit, E.g see above, but I’m not expecting 100% perfection!

low
im still “binging” on foods that are “allowed” but high in sugar or carbs. These include mixed dried fruit, bread, oat cookies (I thought they were sugar free, but they do have sugar). I’m quite a literal person so if things are technically allowed, then I let myself have them. These are the steps I am taking in future to avoid these…

  1. don’t replace the mixed fruit
  2. now I know the cookies have sugar in, I won’t eat them again.
im pretty pleased with all of this, because an old binge would be on loads of empty calories, like chocolate and sweets and could go on for ages.. at least a few slices of bread fill me up as well as satisfying the cravings.

@FatGirlTriesAgain23 … like you say, at least that was better than the old days! Can you try to fill up on stuff like yoguart and fruit? That’s my go to, although I’m not always in the mood for it… can you have a few ready meals in the freezer in case you have another day like that? Even eating 3 ready meals will fill you up and prevent a binge. Well done!!!!

@fivetriangulartrees … once every week is better than every day. Well done!!!

FatGirlTriesAgain23 · 20/03/2023 18:06

It's been a struggle to stay away from sugar this past week. I succumbed in the corner shop when I had to get change. Could have bought just my usual gardening magazine, but added in some sweet stuff.

My cold is getting better, though slowly, and things are picking up at home with the longer days. If it would just stop raining for more than a day. Then I'd happily tidy my garden and get my exercise.

I'm including more veg in my food. My goal atm is to lose the flab from being a couch potato during this awful cold, and kill the sweet tooth by the end of this month.

fivetriangulartrees · 20/03/2023 21:20

I know how you feel. It's hard to look after yourself when you feel rubbish anyway. I've been coughing for months and have had a cold all this week. My son made a chocolate pudding which undid all my recent efforts and I've slid back into bad habits, as well as eating an awful lot of cheese. Thanks for keeping this thread going so I feel accountable. Starting again again...

FatGirlTriesAgain23 · 22/03/2023 18:25

I feel for you with thechocolate pudding@fivetriangulartrees
My undoing yesterday and Monday was the Mars bar cake for Mother's Day.

I've managed a whole day today without excess sugar. I often have some bread and flora or nut butter with a very thin scrape of jam. But no cakes, biscuits, sweets. I felt more upbeat and have been more active.

Lazyi · 23/03/2023 09:14

Well done @FatGirlTriesAgain23

HI @FatGirlTriesAgain23 , @fivetriangulartrees and others. I've done pretty well, until Easter day, when I ate some birthday cake and chocolate, and then yesterday I ate chocolate, fudge and cake.

Re-setting today, and really hoping I can get right back on the wagon, as I had done so well up until now.

Best of luck!

fivetriangulartrees · 11/04/2023 23:21

Oh well done on keeping going so long. I've fallen off the wagon recently but I've just about got over the umpteenth illness of this year so it's the perfect moment for you to give me a prod.

FatGirlTriesAgain23 · 13/04/2023 06:35

I've well and truly fallen off the wagon since the Easter holidays started. Several birthdays in the family this month too, and I can't possibly say no to cake. So this weekend will be my reset. As there is a very important child's birthday tomorrow. There's only one birthday after that, and that will be a much quieter adult affair.

HelloDaisy · 16/04/2023 20:08

Can I join you this week please? I really, really need to stop eating sugar as it’s making me feel so ill ☹️

I’ve been eating far too much sugar, cakes, biscuits, chocolate etc etc etc and then feeling sick and fluttery. The sick feeling just makes me want more and so it goes on..

Anyway, I’m stopping right now and will be going cold turkey. I know it will be hard this week so is there anything I can do to minimise the change or do I just need to grit my teeth?

Lazyi · 17/04/2023 05:48

@HelloDaisy .

great to have you!
get some nice fruit and veg in the house to snack on.
get some alternative snacks: nuts, crackers (without sugar), peanut butter and marmite. Just focus on giving up sugar in week one, don’t try to lose weight.
fizzy water with lemon works for some.

let us know how you get on!!

How are you getting on OP? Is anyone else still going? If so please inspire me with the benefits and let me know if it gets easier...

fivetriangulartrees · 24/08/2023 19:10

Absolutely hopeless. I need to start again but there's probably no point in trying in the middle of home renovations when I'm stressed out, everything is covered in dust and I can't remember where we've put the vegetables.
