Sugar

It’s embarrassing and ridiculous, but I am addicted to sugar. Had a massive binge yesterday, ate 100g of sweets, massive slice of cake, a pack of cookies and a scone with jam and cream. Now getting night sweats and massive energy slumps. I’ve been addicted to alcohol in the past, and the feeling of cravings is similar. The buck stops here. Please help support me and join me if you wish. This is day one on my sugar free journey.

avoid artificial sweeteners, by the way - they are just as bad for you

Ricco12 · 25/01/2023 11:32

Ha ha nope cold water anything isn't for me either OP Confused

DiDonk · 25/01/2023 11:41

Good luck OP, can I just say the simplest tip which I expect you already do - just don't have any in the house!

If it's not there you can't have any so no willpower required.

AnotherSpare · 25/01/2023 11:59

Well done on getting to day 3, that's a great achievement!
Following for inspiration! I've tried to do this before, several times. I find the first week or so ok, when it's a novelty and a new challenge. The difficulty for me has always come after a few weeks when the novelty has worn off.
I have a reasonable amount of control in that I can limit my portions, like, I can have one piece of cake after dinner and stop myself eating the rest. But I have no self control with the frequency, so if there is cake I'll have a piece with breakfast, mid morning, after lunch, mid afternoon, after dinner.
So for me, the frequency of my sugar intake is my problem. I need to do some meal prepping because I think that will help but recently I've been really stuck for meal inspiration!

NewDiag · 25/01/2023 12:03

Can I join?! I am also on day 3! Read 'why we eat too much' and am cutting out refined sugar and wheat as much as possible.

Can you drink squash?

I absolutely believe sugar is addictive. I have ADHD and when I’m struggling I use it like a dopamine hit. The challenge is I can eat enormous amounts of sugar without stopping. Love it and hate it at the same time

That’s really interesting. I am convinced I have traits of adhd, elements of my character really strike me as potentially being adhd. And I definitely definitely calm my inner dialogue with sugar as a dopamine hit. I have always been addicted to something.

I have been so successful in the past at giving it up but I also really need to be in the right headspace and sometimes I’m just not. It is ridiculous. I am sat in an office (I’m temping) and nothing to do, there is a box of quality street and I have eaten 8, I feel genuinely embarrassed that they will see how many of them I have eaten and yet I just can’t stop. I ran this morning and havent hydrated properly and this is the end result. Even though I know it, I just can’t seem to stop it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/01/2023 14:43

Keep going OP, it gets so much easier as time goes on and the cravings for me really diminished. Well done, first week is proper hard 💐

Billybagpuss · 25/01/2023 14:45

I’m sorry 🫣 cold water swimming is awesome but actually really does help.

Brown fat breaks down blood sugar (glucose) and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature. Cold temperatures activate brown fat, which leads to various metabolic changes in the body. Most of our fat, however, is white fat, which stores extra energy. Too much white fat builds up in obesity.

however don’t even think about starting now, it’s bloody freezing, it’s down to 2.95 degrees at the moment. Build it up gradually it does take a while to actually enjoy it, and I’m a long way from being able to ditch the wetsuit mid winter yet but last year we were in wetsuit at 17 degrees this year we made it down to 8.

cravingtoblerone · 25/01/2023 20:29

Can I join you? Sugar addiction is the one thing holding me back from a healthy lifestyle.

Some group accountability would be really great.

Lazyi · 25/01/2023 20:54

@cravingtoblerone , welcome! What are your main triggers?
day 3 completed. I made myself this muddying this evening, but with 100g dried dates instead of sugar. I also bung in three apples and sunflower seeds. Only needed a smallish portion.www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/microwave-banana-pudding

@Lazyi

I'm a real emotional eater and sugar is my main crutch. I always feel like I'm really depriving myself without it. Also I struggle to be around other people eating sugar - which as I have a 9 year old DS who loves cake, is hard to avoid.

Big triggers: ice cream (my big love)
Chocolate - I can avoid cheaper stuff like Cadbury's without too much pressure (it doesn't taste the same these days) but I love posh chocs

Cake/biscuits/sweets are less of an issue (but again, if my DS is eating them then I can't resist.)

It's good to be around people who understand.

cravingtoblerone · 26/01/2023 08:10

Ok, day 1. Gritting my teeth. Here goes....

cravingtoblerone · 26/01/2023 09:13

Out of interest - where do people stand on fruit juice? I tend to have a small nip of cranberry every day (like a shot glass full) as I'm prone to UTIs. But it's very sweet...

I don’t. I will have as much fruit as I want but where juice is processed it has a much higher concentration of fructose.

AutumnScream · 26/01/2023 11:36

Can i join? It looks like i may have gestational diabetes without risk factors so may be just down to eating too much sugar. I need to give it up completely:(

CinderellasBoot · 26/01/2023 11:40

I'm joining this thread! Well done op for acknowledging.
I'm so ashamed of how much sugar I eat I can't even write it down for myself.

Lazyi · 26/01/2023 11:42

@NewDiag
Welcome – what are your triggers?
@Billybagpuss and @Nimbostratus100 suggests no ‘sugar free’ stuff (see above), but hey – your body, your rules. I think that we all need to tailor things to what works for us. For example, I am not blocking out white bread or pasta, because life’s hard enough, and I don’t really crave them – but that will be different for others.
@DiDonk I am working on “not having it in the house” – treading a line between wanting my kids to have healthy habits with food, and making sure that there is no easy temptation in sight.
@cravingtoblerone
Go you!!
Again, fruit juice isn’t something I really drink, so doesn’t apply to me, but “your body, your rules”!
@AutumnScream – welcome! Tell us a bit about how much sugar you eat!

Day 4 on a roll, and great having you all here for support

AutumnScream · 26/01/2023 17:16

I can be absolutely ridiculous with the amount of sugar i eat per day. Can start off eating sugary cereal or a cake bar or a muffin and carbs or a hot chocolate then go into work and snack on chocolates/ sweets/ fizzy drinks. Then onto lunch chocolate muffin or brownie, then when i get home i can eat a big bar of chocolate and probably more sweets.

I passed my GTT test but keep getting high glucose in my urine so i have to not eat sugar this week and do a urine test again next week and if theres glucose in it i have to go to the diabetes clinic and start on a finger prick monitor.

Try doing the keto or Michael moseleys fast 800 to kick start and retrain your brain. It is painful to start with but does help and re-educate yourself

This! 👆🏻 One stone down since the start of Jan and sugar cravings gone

hadenoughforever · 26/01/2023 17:32

Also want to join in, starting after a terrible day of eating too much chocolate. I hate myself. I hate what I look like. I’m a big fat failure.

MotherOfCatBoy · 26/01/2023 17:53

Joining
Im vegetarian and we do Dry January every year so have some experience with making healthy changes - but like others I find it easier to be completely On or Off, the middle ground is hard.
After the Christmas treats went from the cupboards, I am trying to limit sugar to a few squares of dark chocolate only. Both me and my son love chocolate so it’s always in the house and at least once a week I’ll get through a whole bar in a day.
i do find the cravings subside the less you have.
Also my worst time is about 4pm, trying to have nuts to hand then instead. They are full of protein, good fats and micronutrients and are surprisingly filling, they take the edge off cravings til supper. (Not salted ones, things like walnuts or almonds).

cravingtoblerone · 26/01/2023 17:58

Have managed all day without issue but cravings kicking in now. Going to try some walnut halves and see if that helps...

Lazyi · 26/01/2023 18:15

Hello everyone! I'd like to join in. I've had a sweet tooth all my life. It has been a full-blown addiction since my teens. As soon as I had a job and my own money, I ate, drank and smoked out of control.

I found it easy to stop smoking - too expensive, smelly. Drinking - not too hard since there was always the possibility of being breathalysed. But overeating, and sugary crap in particular, has ruled my life for decades.

I do the same daft things over and over. Buy multi-packs and tell myself I'll only eat two. Then get all restless and finish the pack to stop them shouting to me from the fridge. Not buy cookies, then drive to McD's for them. Call in at two different corner shops on each school run and spend £5 on sweets, biscuits, cakes.

I'm clamping down on all this now, partly for my health, and partly with the CoL crisis I feel great shame for wasting so much money.

I've given the cornershops a big swerve yesterday and today. Easy because I had a multipack to come home too. Which of course I finished. Must avoid again tomorrow.

I drink lots of redbush tea, which helps with cravings.
