Subbing alcohol for chocolate

I'm 10 months sober but I find myself creeping into same addiction habits with chocolate. The hiding, binge etc. So pleased I'm sober - but am aware of the dangers of subbing one for the other (and the horrid weight gain!)

Would love some advice. Is there an equivalent of The Unexpected Joy of being Sober as I found that v helpful.

Thx

I bounce between the two, Lotty! Plus got into the fags again during lockdown 🙄. It's like whack-a-mole: bash one down and another comes up. Sigh.

I've been going to OA for quite a while re 12 step programme for food. (OA = Overeaters Anonymous, though it deals with all eating disorders /behaviours). The vast majority have issues with sugar, particularly sugar+fat. A gateway to sugar for me is simple carbs+fat. Anyway, have a look at OA, it's the AA equivalent but for food. We follow AA 12 steps etc and use the AABB [with unaltered text re 'alcohol' is not substituted with 'food', though food is why we're there]. I'm not saying you're a food addict but I know from experience that sugar is highly addictive and mood-altering, it puts you to sleep mentally, emotionally, spiritually if you are a user with it.

Do take a look, most meetings are still on zoom. As you know from AA meetings, you can come and go at will ie you can visit to see what it's about.

I would say though that using sugar does escalate - you know the story - so do address this. It doesn't help that Dr Bob recommends cake (in the AABB) when coming off alcohol!! We in OA squirm at that bit lol.

I think you'll find that you aren't the only AA who turns to sugar, not by a long shot.

Or is it Bill W who recommends cake 🤔

Take a look at all the cake and biscuits at AA meetings...
