My son developed an addiction to street valium 10 years ago aged 14. Hes been struggling ever since. 5 years ago the GP prescribed 120 mg diazepam daily and very gradually reduced the dose. Whenever he gets below 50mg he feels awful and starts using other stuff as well as street valium. He currently collects a daily prescription of pills and methadone but this is still not enough. At the weekend he took 100 street valium..... not unusual for him and he does it to try feel normal. It must have been a bad batch because hes been I'll and very sick for 3 days but refuses to get medical help. I'm out of my box with worry. Help please

He has taken 100 over the weekend?

Is he under a specialist addiction service? GPs don't have the knowledge to manage benzo withdrawal, and he needs talking therapy and practical support, not just a prescription.

Yes he's had lots of help over the years from DCFP CAT team GP Turning point and psychiatric unit. Trouble is they all want to take him off diazepam because NHS guidelines are get everyone off this drug and don't prescribe any more.... but since he was put on 120mg he just feels dreadful without enough.

I feel like one of those munchausons by proxy mothers ….. my son simply neeeeeds diazepam before he kills himself on street drugs.

I was taking a similar but slightly higher amount before I did an inpatient detox- honestly it was the best thing I ever did for my recovery. They keep you medicated so you don't suffer and are in a supportive peer community. Is this an option?
