Please help me find a dress

I am desperate for some help.

Have been to EVERY shop in my city, and hound nothing. Feel like I've seen every dress on the Internet, but nothing suits.

I need it by Thursday at the latest, so have 6 days.

It needs to have a tailored waist due to my rather large belly, or at least flatteringly cover my middle. And it needs to be short - mid thigh at most. It needs to be classy, but young as I am only 28. It's for a formal event.

I am so desperate, I really really need help.

I don't know what to do. Please help.

Sorry - I should have added that it must be sleeveless or strapless.

TBH most tailored dresses (belted shifts etc) tend to be slightly longer so I'm not suprised you can't find anything. Have you tried looking for dresses without tailored waist (there's loads of fab summer cover-ups around ATM) and adding a belt? The other options are to get a longer ones shortened or go for separates - mini skirt & silk blouse should be very easy.

ETA Is 'mid thigh at most' not quite short for a formal event????

Collision · 11/06/2010 22:00

so not this

DSM · 11/06/2010 22:02

Yes... but I am small and have cracking legs

Every time I have tried on a normal 'up and down' dress and added a belt, my stomach sticks out underneath, IYSWIM. Very unflattering.

I have a decent body apart from the belly (which practically makes me look pregnant ) so want something tight, floaty looks awful on me.

And seperates are a no go, I wear a skirt and top every single day and so really want a dress. Plus everyone I am going with is wearing fabulous dresses..

Collision - that one is no good, the tummy will stick out, and it's too long...

Also, I am comfortable in strapless or one shoulder, but not sleeves or big straps.. hope that makes sense!

lechatnoir · 11/06/2010 22:05

What's your budget?

madcapmyrtle · 11/06/2010 22:05

Good advice from LCN...can you tell us what the formal event is...wedding, ball, whatever? If you can, it may be easier to suggest ideas. Also, would you be happy to describe your colouring/dress size/shoe size?
Always helps...

Collision · 11/06/2010 22:05

ok do a link on what you like and then we can sort out the underwear!

What size are you?

KristinaM · 11/06/2010 22:08

strapleess / sleveless AND mid thigh is too much flesh for a formal event. even if you are 28

luciemule · 11/06/2010 22:08

this?
what's the budget?

luciemule · 11/06/2010 22:09

here?

luciemule · 11/06/2010 22:10

hides your tummy

luciemule · 11/06/2010 22:11

last one

MrsBadger · 11/06/2010 22:12

thinking of shops that are always too short for me, try FCUK or Karen Millen

can you do strapless?

one shoulder
hides tum

madcapmyrtle · 11/06/2010 22:12

Agree with Collision - we need more information and then can advise! Do understand your concern re as you say, large belly at the moment, but would magic pants work? M&S have fantastic bras/pants/vests which work wonders on less then superbly gym-toned bodies!

suwoo · 11/06/2010 22:13

All gorgeous Lucie.

Rindercella · 11/06/2010 22:16

Guessing your budget doesn't tretch to £1,100?

DSM · 11/06/2010 22:18

Coast one is nice, but far too long.

Budget is blown out of the water, I am so depserate now. Couldn't go over £200, but that is a serious stretch. My original budget was under £100...

I am 5'5, very long dark brown hair. I am generally a size 12; 36B chest, maybe about a 29" waist (this is a guess..).

I understand your concerns about not wearing much for a 'formal event', but it's an outdoors thing, in hot weather, and I have been three times before and it's very dressy. Younger people tend to wear 'going out' clothes, lots of short, strapless/strappy dresses. Maybe formal was the wrong word.

If I had great pins but a bigger tum I'd splash out on a classic LBD like this or this or this and really go to town with the bling & add a neat little clutch & some killer heels.

IMO bold prints & bright coloured satins really don't do you any favours if your middle is larger (she says from bitter personal experience

Rindercella · 11/06/2010 22:22

How would this work with your tummy do you think?

DSM · 11/06/2010 22:23

I have spanx, which I will be wearing... but I still have a belly that sticks out, even with them on.

Luciemule - the Ted Baker one is nice... the Karen Millen on I love, but have tried it on and it's far too long. The shop assistant said I looked like I was wearing my mums dress

The black Coast one is okay, though I don't think would sufficiently hid the tum and also a little... boring?

OP posts:
lechatnoir · 11/06/2010 22:24

Oh to be rich and svelte Rindercella

tethersend · 11/06/2010 22:26

Err... didn't we already do this, DSM?

Seriously, it may be useful for people to see what you didn't like from your original thread

DSM · 11/06/2010 22:27

lechatnoir - that middle one, the Carven one, is amazing.

I absolutely can't stretch to that money though

Rindercella - the waistband bit is just a little too high, and it's floaty so when I walk, you'll think I am pregnant. Seriously.

I wore a floaty dress once, it's lovely. Three people asked me if I was pregnant. Three.

I am thin(ish) everywhere apart from my pregnant looking belly.

tethersend!

Thank you, I couldn't find it!

FYI - I had three dresses delivered from that thread, and none of them were suitable.
