The 'dis' hair disaster saga continues... I've had a reaction to the dye!

My face is like an itchy tomato.

Like on the front of 'take a break'

Am off to GPs

Dis, please keep an eye on your face. I once dyed my brothers hair and he had a horrendous reaction to it. Doctors gave us anti-histamines and a cream and it didn't touch it. His eyes and throat started to close up.

I'm not saying this to try and scare you, I just want you to be aware for any changes, especially as you said that your face was feeling tight.

If you start to swell please go to hospital immediately, if we hadn't got my brother there when we had (against the advice of the GP may I add who thought we should ride it out) he might have died.

On a brighter note, all the toddlers in the childrens ward (he was 15 at the time) thought he was some sort of monster and started to scream. We got lots of filthy looks from disgruntled parents who couldn't settle their children while the 'monster' was in the room.

Good luck and make sure that DH says in a loud enough voice

'I do hope you will change your policy and carry out mandatory patch testing for all new clients having their hair coloured, God forbid anyone else suffers like my wife at the hands of your clearly incompetent staff'

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 14/05/2010 18:43

What happened, Dis?

Disenchanted3 · 14/05/2010 18:50

DH went and they gave him £30

he showed her the pics of me and I noticed something on my scalp a few hrs ago, DH has looked and I've got chemical burns all over my head they are really sore.

I'm never EVER dying my hair ever again, never salon OR home.

OP posts:
Disenchanted3 · 14/05/2010 18:51

But the burns are probably down to the bleach at home rather than the salon i should think,

cupparooibos · 14/05/2010 18:59

Oh my goodness I have been following your saga and I hope you're okay, Dis. I have had a reaction, once, years ago and it was in a similar situation dye over dye to fix a bad colour. I wonder if there is some sort of chemical reaction between the dyes when that happens.

Monitor yourself closely and ANY sign of tightness in chest, wheezy breathing or similar go directly to a hospital, as ant3anna says. You poor thing.

Disenchanted3 · 14/05/2010 19:28

I took some pics, sorry they are dark

my face actually feels alot worse than it looks.

OP posts:
teta · 14/05/2010 20:43

That looks really sore!.Please don't use any more hair dye - I am not trying to shock you bot a bad reaction can be fatal. But having said that I do not think in this case it is the fault of your hairdresser-but a combination of factors.Just be very careful in future!

lucykate · 14/05/2010 20:48

oh dis , really sorry this has happened, maybe mummyto2monkeys can help, will link her to this thread from the review thread.

Lulumaam · 14/05/2010 20:52

they were negligent not to do a skin test.. and they did not even give you a full refund

write a letter, enclose copies of the pics and tell them unless you get the rest of the money back you will seek legal advice

that is really serious

FloweryTwats · 14/05/2010 20:53

Oh how awful for you, looks painful

I am surprised that a salon agreed to dye your hair over the top of the dyes you'd already put on in the first place let alone without a patch test, they were very much in the wrong.

lucykate · 14/05/2010 20:59

i think unfortunately the problem with taking this further is the home kits that were used before going to the salon. they will most likely try and say there is no way to tell which has caused the reaction

Lulumaam · 14/05/2010 21:02

i do agree that based on the state poor dis was in, then a patch test or delaying dyeing due to being oversensitised would have been far more sensible.

kingprawntikka · 14/05/2010 21:04

The salon I go to insisted I have a patch test before they did my hair last time because it had been longer than 16 weeks sine they last coloured my hair.

Hope you are feeling less sore tonight and that the anti-histamine is helping.

Goober · 14/05/2010 21:06

Bloody hell DIS. This is not good.

Goober · 14/05/2010 21:08

I think if you wanted to make a complaint about the lack of test they would say that your own colour had caused the rash.

ZZZenAgain · 14/05/2010 21:09

poor you, sounds painful and drastic. Can't believe the salon just fobbing you off and getting all shirty about it.

I am sitting here right now with wet hair having just dyed it....

Disenchanted3 · 15/05/2010 08:33

I know it wasn't my dye because I had that on for over 12 hours with no itch

as soon as they put my head under the heater the rash started around my forehead, but i thought it was some dye on my head.

I met a friend on the way home and she said all round my eyes were red.

by night time my jaw had a rash

and morning my whole face was,

has faded alot this morning,

still itchy tho and my skin is SO SO SO dry!!

its like sand paper from my eyes down to my shoulders!

OP posts:
Lulumaam · 15/05/2010 09:34

you need to write it all down and send them a more formal letter, asking for the rest of the money.. they gave you £30 and you paid £50 IIRC... do you pay for your prescriptions? If so, i'd be inclined to ask them to reimburse you for those too

my friend had an allergic reaction to a product at a beauty salon,to a treatment she'd had before , alhtough the product was slightly differnt... got her money back, in full, free products and a free treatment.

Disenchanted3 · 15/05/2010 10:37

The dye was £30 I said I didn't want my money back for the cut, that was fine.

OP posts:
Lulumaam · 15/05/2010 11:21

my mistake..

PrimroseCrabapple · 15/05/2010 12:03

Dis get some 0.5% hydrocortizone and use it thinly twice a day. i had an allergic reaction to washing powder and my eyes swelled up so much the skin split. my gp said the hydroc was fine as long as it was for a short amount of time spread thinly. Aveeno stuff the nicest for moisturising i find e45 makes mine worse.

i am now allergic/sensitive to loads of products but am great with aveeno.

Disenchanted3 · 15/05/2010 12:05

I have been using e45 and my skins so fry!

will try aveeno,

I have hydrocorisone cream but says not for the face?

OP posts:
PrimroseCrabapple · 15/05/2010 12:09

so does mine dis - GP said nothing else would fix it . twice a day, v thinly spread

teta · 15/05/2010 14:52

You can use the hydrocortisone on your face for a couple of days without any harm.It thins and damages the skin if used all the time. But chemists will refuse to sell it to you if you say it is for your face so fib!.I actually don't think this is the fault of your hairdresser.Any of the dyes you put on your head could have caused a reaction and they were trying to help!.If i were them I wouldn't have agreed to do it.I think it was kind of them to give you the money back and a gesture of goodwill.Incidentally a patch test takes at least 24-48 hours .Would you have been prepared to wait that long?.
