Has anyone ever dyed their hair blonde, with a home kit, and not looked a twat?

am considering it
roots need doing BADLY but too £££ to go to hairdresser

mate says go for it

I'm not sure

What will happen as "normal" hair (i.e. 1 inch roots ) is a few shades darker than the rest at the mo. will it colour evenly, or will I look dreadful?

mines dark blonde too (was much lighter blonde when i was younger) and i do mine at home. as your hair is previously dyed, i would follow the instructions on the kit for doing to the roots first, then the rest of the hair. i've done mine at home with roots of about an inch and had no problems, in fact i think if you choose your colour wisely, home jobs can be just as good as the salon version.

MamaG · 09/05/2010 10:08

so would i dye roots, leave to dry etc then dye whole lot?

I don't knwo how good i'd be at that sort of thing!

follow the instructions on the pack and it should be fine, just match the colur carefully, maybe buy a couple of different packs so you can have another go if 1st shot isnt exactly what you want.

fatzak · 09/05/2010 10:18

Good luck. I have been an apricot shade far too many times after a home lightening experience! I'd suggest buying a light brown semi permanent to put over just in case it goes wrong

YouCantTeuchThis · 09/05/2010 10:18

I have tried many, many times.....

I get advice on colours, I follow the instructions - I almost always get ginger hair. Maybe not immediately, but by a few days later, it is most definitely ginger.

The best results I have achieved is to go for the l'oreal [spit] colour experte where you dye your whole head one colour (usually as near to your natural colour as poss) and then do highlights, which I am very slap dash about and it seems to work well.

I find this a decent compromise for discuising roots between visits to hairdresser.

good luck.

Fatzak - I have been brown many times for this very reason!!

MamaG · 09/05/2010 10:25

I have tried to do this but not successfully

looked like a belisha beacon, not a great look

lucykate · 09/05/2010 10:34

do roots, leave on for about 10 mins, or whatever the instructions say, then spread over the rest of the hair and leave for the rest of the time as on the instructions, then rinse, condition and dry.

regarding colours, i did textiles at uni so know a bit about dyes, colours and how they work. my advice would be to always go for ash tones when using home kits. the problem with them is red is the strongest pigment, so as the colour fades, it just goes redder as the red is left behind on the hair. just something to bear in mind if picking anything labeled warm/honey/golden blonde.

l'oreal colours are good, i don't get on with nice & easy.

Guadalupe · 09/05/2010 10:35

I went ginger with feria but I have dark hair and I looked like a twat. Dh won't let me get my hands on the photo.

isthatporridgeinyourzone · 09/05/2010 10:39

Yes - I was going blonder and blonder at the hairdressers with highlights and then got too many grey bits so do it as home now.

I have to agree there is a tendancy towards auburn, and also keep a light brown for ginger emergencies.

Avad · 09/05/2010 10:46

Any advice for someone who has reverted to the 80s and been using sun in spray? It was fine at first but now my hair won't go past that brassy/orangey stage and I can't afford the £70+ itcosts at the hairdressers for it to be sorted out every couple of months.

It was naturally a light/medium brown although when I was a child it was a lovely honey blonde.

Tips please and also hair dye shades/brands recommendations!

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 09/05/2010 10:47

Good tips on this site

yama · 09/05/2010 10:51

Yes, I have - since I was 13. Like Lapin, hairdresser says it looks lovely. Most folk think it's natural as I'm quite fair with very light eyebrows.

I alternate btween L'Oreal Excellence and L'Oreal something else. Various shades so hair doesn't become yellow.

yama · 09/05/2010 10:51

Recital - that's it! L'Oreal Recital.

Lotkinsgonecurly · 09/05/2010 10:55

I use L'oreal something or other. Its really good. My original hair colour is mousy brown, very dark blonde so I started dyeing it a few shades lighter and the next time went for the colour I actually like. I think I'm now around a honey blonde.

BattyKoda · 09/05/2010 10:59

I find that home kits make blonde hair look a bit 'yellow'.This stuff is fantastic. I use it once a week and it really lifts my colour. Also this is really good. Big boots shops stock it.

If you put the colour on your roots for the specied time in the instructions and then comb the rest through to your ends with a comb for another 10mins the colour should be pretty even.
If you find it goes ginger you could use a shampoo with a blue/violet tint to it which removes brassy tones but you have to use it at least once a week.

lucykate · 09/05/2010 11:57

batty, i will give the lee stafford stuff a try, my biggest bugbear with home hair dyes is the dark blonde shades aren't ashy enough iykwim, for me, they don't add enough purple into them. it really annoys me when the colour on the box is nothing like what it comes out like, these people are supposed to be colour mixing specialists but then don't seem to know they're adding far too much red.

there is one l'oreal one i don't like, think it's the new excell 10, used the mid ash blonde one and it came out ginger!
