Has anyone ever dyed their hair blonde, with a home kit, and not looked a twat?

am considering it
roots need doing BADLY but too £££ to go to hairdresser

mate says go for it

I'm not sure

What will happen as "normal" hair (i.e. 1 inch roots ) is a few shades darker than the rest at the mo. will it colour evenly, or will I look dreadful?

actually, i've been thinking for a while about starting a home hair dye review thread where people can list their natural hair colour, collur and brand they used and outcome good or bad etc. what do you reckon?

lucykate · 09/05/2010 11:59

I've used mostly L'Oreal for 20+ years & it always comes out fine. Must depend on what colour you are to start. I'm mousy iirc & am usually dyed mid blond which lightens over the weeks. Have recently decided I'd like to be ginger but can't find many shades to try!

Im on the edge of my seat here!

And that's a great idea, lucykaye,

isthatporridgeinyourzone · 09/05/2010 12:04

God, I've got to go out now - want to hang on for mama's hair.

HairExtensions · 09/05/2010 12:04

I meant lucykate (tis my nerves!)

Ivykaty44 · 09/05/2010 12:08

You only put the dye on the roots - with a thick brush - best to get someone to actually section the hair and just cover the roots with the dye, think wait until the dyed hair is just about the same colour as the already done hair.

make sure you have plenty of clips and a pin tailcomb for sstraight sectioning.

Ivykaty44 · 09/05/2010 12:10

the ginger look is because the hair hasn't had long enough with the dye

MamaG · 09/05/2010 12:11

OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD

No I pretty much looked a twat but then I don't suit blonde so that may have had more to do with it.

Good luck!

CiderIUpAndSetIFree · 09/05/2010 12:22

I'd be up for a hair dye experiment thread. In fact I might just change my name to HairDyeObsessive.

Am in suspense MamaG - we need pics!

skihorse · 09/05/2010 12:26

I do mine at home and I do all over because I'm a brand whore - I'll take whatever is 50% off - if you just do the roots then if the shade is "off" it may look weird.

Must look OK because last time I was in the hairdresser a woman asked her stylist to check my notes for which colour I was using.

I'm a blue-eyed, dirty blonde with Scottish alabaster skin.

lucykate · 09/05/2010 12:31

will start a review thread later, am houseworking in between sorting lunch atm, will put a pic up on profile of my hair, it's dyed blonde, needs doing again though as roots are now showing!

lucykate · 09/05/2010 12:34

ok, pic is now on profile, this was last week just after having it cut and dried at hairdressers, but colour is always done at home.

MamaG · 09/05/2010 12:34

oh god its coming out in handfusl

OP posts:
lucykate · 09/05/2010 12:37

don't panic, i loose a bit of hair during dyeing, plug hole gets full of the stuff.

MamaG · 09/05/2010 12:41

haha it was fine
just a few hairs
I always lose loads of hair

Well. Coverage looking pretty even. Colourwise can't reallky tell as still wet and I can't find teh farking hairdryer (fgs)

Will put up a pic if I like, will start a thread asking wher ei can buy a wig if I don't
