What would you dress a boy in to go to an old school upper class garden party wedding?

I need inspiration for what to dress DS in. He is 7.

I mean old school as in not 'posh' in the modern sense of the word, I wouldn't dress him in a little Next suit, for example. More your classic look.

It's a family wedding so he needs to look 'nice', not sure he usual old worn cords and grubby t shirt wouldsuffice...

Any suggestions would be greatly received

Monsoon do nice boys stuff here. I would get him a nice shirt and linen trousers - either the Filippe Kurta Shirt and Connor trousers or the Kadin Shirt and Adam Check trousers.

I was thinking birkies as there will be a beach trip too and it will all take place outside in a big garden.

There is no pressure for him to 'dress up'. I just want an excuse to dress him up nicely for a change.

In addition to the long navy shorts and Boden shirt
something like these Not necessarily actually these.

Obviously no socks and clean feet/legs will be required!!!

We are going to be big wedding at the beginning of September, and I have just sorted out DS 10!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/05/2010 18:09

Birkies would be the very thing!

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:09

aarghelp - probably my mum if she could figure out this internet thingy.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:10

think monsoon is out, they don't go up to big enough sizes, but these shorts are nice

these with a white shirt

I need stuff for ds for cruise

MollieO · 01/05/2010 18:14

aarghhelp am very tempted by the breeches and yodelling shirt combo in your link. I expected them to be for very small people and was shocked they go up to age 10. Can't imagine my ds even at 5 agreeing to wear something like that.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:15

oooooh cruise ggirl?

Monsoon go up to age 7-8 but depends on how big your 7 yr old is.

John Lewis may be worth a look too.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:19

Mollie he's tall, in 8-9yr old clothes

John Lewis stuff here. Ds has a pair of JL chinos and they are lovely. You could do those with a nice shirt.

OrmRenewed · 01/05/2010 18:23

Clean, unripped trousers, clean unripped buttoned shirt. Any shoes that aren't trainers. That is quite sufficient for a 7yr old.

He will look at his best if he is relaxed and happy. And clean. Preferably.

MollieO · 01/05/2010 18:25

Hate to say it (because of the other weird clothes on this site!) but this shirt would look good with chinos.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:27

thanks MollieO

I like this top! Would look cute with some navy shorts

I am borrowing stuff from friends for ds' for the cruise.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:31

couldn't agree more Orm, but I am gonna milk this great excuse to finally have a say in what he wears

I have had to resort to short sleeved shirts because my DS hates any kind of restrictive clothing - refuses to wear long sleeved shirts as the cuffs are too tight. Short sleeved shirts are the only semi smart option he will consider. Otherwise he would spend his life in track suit trousers and t shirts.

I would have to tie him down and drug him to get him into most of the outfits being suggested here
