What would you dress a boy in to go to an old school upper class garden party wedding?

I need inspiration for what to dress DS in. He is 7.

I mean old school as in not 'posh' in the modern sense of the word, I wouldn't dress him in a little Next suit, for example. More your classic look.

It's a family wedding so he needs to look 'nice', not sure he usual old worn cords and grubby t shirt wouldsuffice...

Any suggestions would be greatly received

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 02/05/2010 18:36

Chinos or shorts and a plain colour shirt in a colour that suits him.

I LOVE it all.

CaptainNancy · 02/05/2010 19:18

Little White Company usually have some nice things, but not too sure what sizes they go up to.

cloelia · 02/05/2010 20:41

Oh you are mean about tulip and nettle, I always wanted to get something for my dds but they refused to wear it. Thought the plain sort of hero shirt was really smart! Poor me, obviously I am a Sound of Music refusenik.

SuSylvester · 02/05/2010 20:42

the next navy blue tank top i just put on ebay

choosyfloosy · 02/05/2010 20:46

i bought ds a white linen shirt and navy linen shorts in m&s autograph for a wedding, but it was last year.

Main thing is to shove them on him at the last possible moment, and to carry a wet flannel so that he's at least clean at the moment the bride's mother sees him. After that, the deluge.

MadameCastafiore · 02/05/2010 20:48

Dark Blue tailored shorts and a brand spanking new white gap polo and some smart shoes will suffice.

I think it should be illegal to dress young children in suits - DH hates wearing them on the odd occasion saying he is uncomfortable and hot and sweaty if he can't stand it for long at 37 I dread to think how a child would feel.

largeginandtonic · 03/05/2010 07:11

Oh no NOT a suit, bleurgh.

Some nice shorts and top plus like Su said a cute tank over the white shirt, pref navy, to save the outfir from the ineviatble mess.

Rachle Riley and White Comp are full of them!

MmeLindt · 03/05/2010 07:34

M&S did some fab chinos for boys last year. I would go for navy chinos and a shirt.

DS wore a kilt with a rugby shirt to a family wedding last year, it looked really smart. You could do chinos and a rugby shirt.

btw, OMDB, I made your apple streusel cake last weekend. It was FAB. My German DH was most impressed. Thanks for the recipe.

higgle · 03/05/2010 18:09

My sons used to wear navy chino style trousers and Boden check long sleeved shirts for best when they were little, smart enough for weddings etc and can be dressed down by wearing trousers with T shirts and the shirt with Jeans when it gets a bit worn.

Tortington · 03/05/2010 18:11

i think he should wear somthing comfy, as long as hes clean and pressed he will look fine

MmeTrueBlueberry · 03/05/2010 18:13

When we went to a wedding with DSs, aged about 7 and 5...I dressed them in navy blue tailored bermuda shorts, with long navy socks, and long-sleeved white/blue pinstripe shirts.
