What would you dress a boy in to go to an old school upper class garden party wedding?

I need inspiration for what to dress DS in. He is 7.

I mean old school as in not 'posh' in the modern sense of the word, I wouldn't dress him in a little Next suit, for example. More your classic look.

It's a family wedding so he needs to look 'nice', not sure he usual old worn cords and grubby t shirt wouldsuffice...

Any suggestions would be greatly received

plus fours and a cape.

oh fgs put him in a shirt and some trousers

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 17:42

yeah but what kind of shirt?

He doesn't own any, just ratty old t shirts

and his trousers are all worn and frayed at the bottoms...

For my wedding in the carribbean i bought ds a lovely natural linen suit with a linen shirt (nehru collar?) from Verbaudet. Their formal outfits are cute, not little chav like the Next ones are - unfortunately!

Jacket was safari style - mini roger moore ha ha. Trousers had turn up tags so they could be buttoned up 3/4 style.

Was quite reasonable too if I remember....

SuSylvester · 01/05/2010 17:44

SuSylvester · 01/05/2010 17:44

southeastastra · 01/05/2010 17:46

how about this shirt it's very sober apparently

whatthe · 01/05/2010 17:47

GAP do lovely preppy stuff too, and you can download a 30% voucher this weekend from martin lewis website

cantcarryon · 01/05/2010 17:49

Just get a short sleeved cotton shirt and a a pair of cotton trousers. Have had some really nice and cheap ones from supermarkets - asda is good. no point spending a lot on a posh outfit - he will probably refuse to wear it and will never get any more use from it.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/05/2010 17:49

Three quarter length navy shorts, French style, and a shirt like this

Don't stress too long

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 17:50

No I don't want a little 'outfit' like the safari thing, but thanks for your help whatthe!

I just want him to look nice. He is a scruffy scruff all the time and I want him to look a leeetle bit more well groomed than usual.

I don't care what other people will think either, I don't need to make any sort of impression, I just want him to look nice, for me.

sharbie · 01/05/2010 17:55

I agree with OP my son wore long navy shorts and a lovely white shirt (shirt from Debenhams) for a wedding when he was 2.So sweet.

activate · 01/05/2010 17:56

shirt with a collar not collarless

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 17:56

I'm liking the navy shorts idea

activate what would you class as good shoes?

OP posts:
activate · 01/05/2010 17:57

polished -

possibly his school shoes but polished not scuffed and obviously worn through

diddl · 01/05/2010 17:58

Dare I ask what is about a short sleeved shirt?

princessmel · 01/05/2010 18:01

Last summer wedding we went to, ds1 wore neutral coloured 3/4 linen-ey shorts, a pin striped shirt with rolled up 3/4 sleeves and a funky tie from h+m (came with the shirt)

Other times he's worn a smart shirt and navy/beige trousers. Sometimes with a tank top (jumper) over the top of shirt.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:02

diddle just a personal mental block against short sleeved shirts on men and boys not sure where it stems from

activate he doesn't have 'school' shoes, just a selection of scuffed trainers I will need to buy him some

I'd second gap.

Or if you live near a retail outlet place - have got my ds's bargain shirts in Ralph Lauren - £9.99 a go.

With perhaps linen trousers/khakis - again gap do loads.

I like birkentstock style sandals on boys too.

overmydeadbody · 01/05/2010 18:04

lol

OP posts:
activate · 01/05/2010 18:04

yes buy him shoes - scuffed trainers at a formal wedding may not be appropriate

aarghhelp · 01/05/2010 18:06

who buys these?
