Anyone know of one that stays on? Also any tips on Goth-wear appreciated?
I'm not a goth but my friend gets dressed up for this and I really fancy going. She'll help me but be nice to hear other's ideas

You want Lipfinity for really red lipstick that stays on until scrubbed off.

Gothwear - depends on your shape really. And whether your friend is a traditional goth or more industrial

DrivenToDistraction · 06/04/2010 12:49

AFAIK real old-school goths hate red...

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 13:16

oh I'm not a real goth so I'll be ok then

Thanks CMOT

Lol! Obviously not, but you may be frowned upon!

southeastastra · 06/04/2010 13:19

ha would they judge on lipsticks? the goths i used to know were only bothered about what they looked like

barry m lipsticks are goth friendly, do nice black and purple too

CuppaTeaJanice · 06/04/2010 13:22

Lots of the goth clothing shops tend to be quite expensive.

Try spiraldirect.com - they have gothic stuff reasonably cheap. Or ebay, you'll find yourself a whole outfit on there, including the New Rock boots!

You need to listen to some goth music if you're going to a goth weekend and don't want to look stupid. Download some Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephelim, Children on Stun, The Mission, Bauhaus etc.

CuppaTeaJanice · 06/04/2010 13:23

And definitely pick a dark red for the lipstick!

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 13:53

cheers again! A mate has sisters of mercy etc... I'm round there tomorrow will get her to play some for me. Actually she has lots of black stuff and I have a black corset so maybe I won't need to get much, just the boots?

MACs Diva would be quite good for a dark pinky red.

SuSylvester · 06/04/2010 14:46

oh fgs at " old school goths dont liek red"

thought all the goth stuff was NOT judging on appearances?!

ImSoNotTelling · 06/04/2010 14:54

Most of the goths I have known have been spectacularly vain

GeorgiesGirl · 06/04/2010 15:20

I think this lady might have something to say about goths not wearing red lipstick! Surely the queen of the goths!?

ImSoNotTelling · 06/04/2010 16:12

that takes me back georgiesgirl

GeorgiesGirl · 06/04/2010 16:32

Aah... me too!

iMum · 06/04/2010 16:37

hmmm, would probably avoid red or if deffo want to go for a very deep adark red rather than true red.

Goth clothes are indeed expensive, and goths are very judgy-very vain and full of self importance (I know, am a goth!)

Dont get newrocks tho-go shoe shopping here

have fun-whitby is fab!

SuSylvester · 06/04/2010 16:39

the thought of a grown up being a goth still makes me laugh ( pitifully)

mazzystartled · 06/04/2010 16:45

Me and DH one ended up in Whitby during Goth Weekend by accident.

Some people looked bloody spectacular. Like they had walked off the set of Interview with a Vampire. I would keep it delicate and regency style flamboyant, and then you will look knowing rather than like a tourist. Yes to dark red.

GladioliBuckets · 06/04/2010 16:49

Google Steampunk for a more interesting take on Goth.

Bear in mind different reds suit different people. I would get a consultation at the Prescriptives counter.

Tips

MrsMeow · 06/04/2010 19:19

Oh I'd love to go to Whitby Goth Weekend, despite not being a Goth myself I reckon I'd have a great time!

Have a look on here

the clothes are advertised in one of the mags I read and some of them are lovely - I've got my eye on the halterneck dress!

ImSoNotTelling · 06/04/2010 19:49

OMG I didn;t realise you could get winklepickers

The amount of men I went out with who wore this desirable footwear!

EggyAllenPoe · 06/04/2010 19:51

start avoiding sunshine now!

and consider a lipgloss like Dior plastic shine (very dramatic) and sod the fact it will come off in two minutes - you will want to show off that gloss! and agree consider the shade wisely - bright scarlet reds do not work for everyone, if your complexion is more honeyed, a chocolate will work better

what is your normal style?

if you usually wear trousers/ jeans - probably more of a combat/ punk goth look with chunky boots

or if you are more a skirts/ dresses person, then velvet skirt & black top with black heels/ fitted boots....

ImSoNotTelling · 06/04/2010 19:59

My advice actually would be to avoid wearing or getting talked into wearing anything too far removed from what you normally wear. You want to relax and enjoy yourself not go around feeling like a twat.

Remember that the most flamboyant people you see have usually taken a long time to work their way up to their look and while they will be dressed up a bit more than usual, they do normally wear unusual clothes. They're not in "fancy dress" IYSWIM.

Hope that makes sense

You will have a ball.

GeorgiesGirl · 06/04/2010 20:12

I have to say, I agree with you Imsonottelling. Maybe a slight nod towards goth but much better to be comfortable in how you look. No one will care how you are dressed as you are all there for the same reason and have that as a common bond. Of course, if you just really fancy getting dressed up, go for it.

BelaLugosiNoir · 06/04/2010 21:35

To get lipstick to stay put - apply, blot with tissue, dust with either face powder or fine talc (helps if you're doing the rest of your face for the pale&interesting bit). Then use a fine brush to remove the excess talc. Apply more lipstick, repeat the process, then add another coat of lipstick and gently blot with tissue.
Good dark reds - there was a L'Oreal one similar to Rouge Noir, but Rouge Noir if you can get it.
The above used to stay on all night no problems.

What's your usual style? You could go Victorian, or more Industrial - or more minimalist. There's a WGW website which has galleries of previous events so that'll give you ideas too. There is usually a large range of what people wear from jeans and pirate shirt through to the very fancy costumes.
Have fun!
