Anyone know of one that stays on? Also any tips on Goth-wear appreciated?
I'm not a goth but my friend gets dressed up for this and I really fancy going. She'll help me but be nice to hear other's ideas

Wine is a good dark red (don't get the red it is a bit orangey imo), with a lip balm, great for varying the strength of colour, it has very good staying power - it isn't a pencil you sharpen, it is like a skinny lipstick which twists out iykwim. Easy to find in most boots stores, lasts for ages and is quite cheap.

I apply light coat of lip balm then use the lip pencil, then if it is too dark more lip balm to lift it off - I have been wearing it since my teens - used to wear it full on vampish dark, but now just use it light for daytime.

Thanks so much will be taking it all on board.

Agree I shouldn't go too fancy dress, think I'll dress as I do and just intensify my look. I do have dark hair and no tan so am somewhat there

I'll post some pics after the event if I get any good ones?

I'm not a proper goth but have always leaned towards the look (not as much as DH wishes though!). There are loads of black lacy things in the shops at the mo which would fit and look lovely with either dresses or more casual stuff. Sounds fun, I have always fancied going there! Would love to see pics!

ravenAK · 06/04/2010 23:11

I'm a goth, & proud .

We go to WGW for both April & October - I'm working this one, so say hi if you're in the Spa on Saturday!

Agree don't dress up if you'll feel like a pillock - I generally don't go overboard, but then I'm usually either looking after my kids or crewing - by the time I get out in the evening I can't be arsed with footwear that'll have me in agony all night.

Try www.demonia.co.uk for shoes - don't spend £100+ on New Rocks if it's a one off.

Oh, & wear whatever lipstick you like.

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 23:14

Cheers you two I'm definitley going to raid a mates wardrobe tomorrow, she's the sisters of mercy fan. She has so much stuff and I know she'll have something to suit. I'm a hairstylist and also did beauty so that bit's no problem for me. It's a shame she's a 5 in shoes as she has so many boots she's a boot shop I'm a 6 so won't be squeezing into them.

I won't be spending much on boots I'll probably borrow or buy second hand.

ravenAK · 06/04/2010 23:24

You might want to check out a band called Rhombus while you're at it...

Rhombus

Your mate who's into the Sisters might like them!

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 23:27

Oh thanks for that ravenAK I'll show her tomorrow

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 23:30

Are you local then ravenAK? I'm not far from Whitby and go often.

Kaloki · 06/04/2010 23:34

"the thought of a grown up being a goth still makes me laugh ( pitifully) "

That's because you are no fun!

curiousmama Enjoy yourself, I've been meaning to go to Whitby for years! Just wear what you like, the goth scene is so judgey, and yet there are a huge variety of different looks. They'll always be someone who disapproves of your look, so only wear what makes you happy.

(Went to a trad goth night in neon pink once - wasn't popular, but had great fun )

Curiousmama · 06/04/2010 23:37

Kaloki when you say judge you, will them comment? I don't mind funny looks but I'll have ds2 with me (dressed up too) so don't want any hassle. Mind you the friend I'm going with won't be messed with

Well off to bed to dream of black lace, night.

OP posts:
Kaloki · 06/04/2010 23:43

Nah, goths aren't usually very confrontational Some will probably act a bit snooty, but you wouldn't want ot talk to anyone like that anyway

ravenAK · 06/04/2010 23:53

Not local really Curiousmama (well, we're in Yorkshire!).

But we've been going for years - the October event coincides neatly with half term, so works well as a holiday (we go for the week) for a teacher with small dc.

Dh's band have played the last four, I think, at various of the venues & either as a full band or an acoustic set. We're friendly with the promter, & she's co-opted me as a duty manager at the Spa for this one. Which is both good (free ticket + beer money) & bad (was looking forward to a relaxing Whitby as dh isn't playing for once...)!

bethjeff · 06/04/2010 23:56

As a siouxsie Sioux wannabe I totally agree- don't get too dressed up and overly dramatic or you might end up looking like a teenage try-hard.
You can never go wrong with a black corset- teamed with a pencil skirt or black skinny jeans it's an easy low maintaince look.
Goth it up with accessories.
If you fancy treating yourself visit lipservice for done gorgeous clothes... Most of my purchases from there can be dressed down enough to become everyday wear.

Shoes- you don't need a particular make. Even goths love cute shoes. Leopard print pumps if you're going to be on your feet all day. You'll enjoy laughing at the unfortunates in new rocks- if you get good weather they are absolutely sweltering and weigh a ton.

On that note if anyone would like to purchase a pair of metal heeled new rocks circa 2000 then let me know ;)

Curiousmama · 07/04/2010 15:55

cheers again everyone, getting quite excited now

I do have a black corset and skinny black dare I say it...jeggings

I like the idea of pumps might try and find some purple ones, what do you think? I love purple.

Have decided on purple lipstick too and as I have greeny/blue big eyes and dark brown hair think I can get away with quite dramatic make-up?

Going round sister of Mercy's tonight so will be raiding her wardrobe. Another mate who's very stylish will be there so no doubt it'll be dress up CM night with a few bottles of wine

Curiousmama · 07/04/2010 15:57

Oh and loved Rhombus..bet my mate will too. Shame they aren't playing though? Wish I knew what you looked like RavenAK I could look out for you? Can you buy a cd as it's mate's birthday soon and I could get her one to go with her present?

OP posts:
Kaloki · 07/04/2010 16:14

Souhnds fantastic! Take pictures!!

Curiousmama · 07/04/2010 17:32

change of plan...I'm bidding on a long corset style evening gown on ebay...thought with a purple/black fascionator (sp?) long black gloves and lacy shawl or cardy?

Or am I mad?

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 07/04/2010 17:36

dress is purple by the way.

Ooh I love the Gothic Weekend, although haven't been in years. Try and have a meal at the White Horse and Griffin - was always lovely.

The market at the WGW always was great and v inspiring. The music on the other hand is not classic goth (unless things have changed). Is very EBM (think dance music more or less). But the side events are more classic and more fun.

Tastic · 07/04/2010 21:28

Listen if you want to go to Whitby Goth Festival then you rock whatever look you want... the whole point at these type of events is no judgments.

Look up SOPHIE Foundation charity young girl killed for looking different and people judging her.

But back to your lipstick. Illamasqua have great lipsticks in red called 'Maneater' 'Tramp' 'Encounter'
But if you fancy black check out their black lipgloss called 'Repluse'

Look at their website for make up ideas www.illamasqua.com

I found my perfect red called 'Maneater' with 'Feisty' lip pencil topped off with clear gloss called 'brillant'

Have a great time and you will as everyone is so friendly.

Curiousmama · 08/04/2010 12:01

Tastic, lovely post thank you

I went to mate's last night and they got me dolled up, I'll try to post a pic later?
I put on the black liquid liner and purple lipstick, short skirt, buckle boots, patterned black tights and black top. It was just a practice.
Friend has found me a black corset in my size in a charity shop today for £3.99 I did buy the dress on ebay but doubt I'll wear it so wasted nearly £30 Never mind maybe I can re-sell it on there and even if I only get half of it back then that's ok?

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 08/04/2010 13:08

Uploaded some pics on here, I need more practice with the make-up and also some light foundation.

OP posts:
Elemental · 08/04/2010 13:25

Looking good!

Curiousmama · 08/04/2010 13:44

cheers will be practising make up skills and playing dress up for a week or two

GladioliBuckets · 08/04/2010 20:20

Wow, you look cool. Youtube is great for make up lessons too. You might also look good with a Marlene Dietrich look - nothing on the bottom lashes, liner and mascara on the top and dark shading in the crease, with highlighter on the brow bone and eyelids. Gives a sordidly sleepy look.
