There's a mention in today's Times that Yasmin Le Bon has a collection for Wallis and one of the photos is of a maxi dress. Looks OK on the model.

why aren't maxi dresses practical?

I've got that one in the last link Tethersend and it is really nice on. I wear a pink lacy vest top underneath to avoid too much cleavage. i am a size 16 up top and the same height as you.
They had it in navy a few weeks ago but sadly I missed it so I had to have black. Sometimes i feel a bit like an arab lady when I wear it but I've had loads of compliments about it.

The Oasis one from ASOS is really really long - and too diffecult for me to shorten (crap at sewing)

Yoohoo - I say get a sleeveless one and wear a l/s T shirt underneath.
