Do you wear make up every day and if not, why not?

Can't get my head around why so many bright, lovely women don't use a bit of slap and would rather face the world with grey, pale, or sun-spotted complexions when 5 minutes with a bit of slap would transform them.

Don't we want to look as good as we can all of the time for as long as we can?

(And don't say you haven't time- I can do full war paint in just over 5 minutes.!)

Soooooooo

How many of you puritans think it o.k for your husband to go without shaving (and growing a biblical beard, I mean, that´s how nature INTENDED men to look, and shaving every day is a bore.) and without using deodorant (Nowt wrong with smelling as nature intended!)

All you who think make up is the work of the devil, and a feminist issue (MN does surprise me sometimes!):

do any of you dye your hair or shave your legs? Under your arms? if so, why?

LoveMyGirls · 08/02/2010 19:16

I would like to wear it everyday, I do look better with it BUT the reason I hardly wear it is because.....

My skin isn't great and the only decent foundation I've found is £26 for a tiny bottle and I can't afford to wear it on a daily basis at that price.

I start work at 7.30am and I work with children, they don't care what I look like and so don't see the need to wear make up. I'm me and if people don't like me for being myself then I'm better off not knowing them.

Lastly I'm a mum to 2 girls and I want to bring them up to be themselves and to be confident and strong women and if they chose to wear make up when they are older then it's their choice.

woodyandbuzz · 08/02/2010 19:19

Chandon, I am not a puritan, makeup does not occur to me. I haven't even thought about makeup for years, I just saw this thread.

For your info, don't like beard - rough etc.

I don't dye my hair - I don't understand that either. It's just brown, it's fine.

Yes, shave armpit, legs and bikini line. Do it cause I like it.

Have to say, wouldn't care if DH didn't use deo

I have no probs with people wearing makeup. However, I do not get it

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2010 19:20

No, I don't shave under my arms or my legs - why should I ?
Honestly, your post is ridiculous

heQet · 08/02/2010 19:21

chandon - beard - fine. no problem. I am sure he'd look great.

bo - bit different - stench is offensive, I mean can make you feel ill, whereas no makeup is unlikely to make anyone gag.

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/02/2010 19:22

I agree with Bumperlicious that when you do something as a normal routine, not doing it will feel odd but it doesn't mean it's actually an odd thing to do by anyone else's standards. If other people think it strange that you're not wearing make up, I would suggest maybe you're wearing too much if the difference is obvious to others!

What looks "better" is subjective - what OP might think looks better might actually feel rather unnatural to someone else. I feel uncomfortable in foundation and, as I am lucky in having clear skin, there is no need for me to put a product all over my face so I don't. I do, however, see the merits in mascara or a bit of vaseline to accentuate eyelashes and feel that I look a bit more awake with mascara on as opposed to wearing none but I don't wear it all the time.
The times when I have worn more makeup, I have definitely not looked better IMO (and dh agrees) so for me, better is the natural approach but I know plenty of people for whom the idea of not wearing at least foundation and blusher is akin to wandering around a supermarket in their dressing gown

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2010 19:24

And why does not wearing make up make you a puritan?
DH has a beard and long hair and he looks gorgeous
I don't see what the use of deodorant issue has to do with anything

SkaterGrrrrl · 08/02/2010 19:31

[Women] have poor eyesight /judgement if they think they look fine over 20 with totally naked skin.

Christ we women really are our own worst enemies, jugging each other on how we look and not on what we are and what we do.

Women with Phds and women who are brilliant mums and women who write poems and women who are working for a cure for cancer all reduced to: how do you look? Are you wearing enough make up today?

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/02/2010 19:31

Puritan? Make up as work of the devil? A feminist issue?

Can't say I got that from reading the posts on this thread

2old4thislark · 08/02/2010 19:36

I am amazed that so many women don't even own any makeup - genuinely gobsmacked! I don't wear any if I'm pottering around the house or just going out walking the dog. But if I'm going out I put on a quick bit of eyeliner, foundation and lippy. For work I go crazy with the mascara brush as well because I feel I want to look like I made an effort.

When my kids were little, my make up was in the hall so I could put a bit on for the school run - that's probably makes me shallow or sad.......

I know I look better with it and washed out without it. I also dye my hair to cover the greys and am also shocked that some women my age don't! I'm 45 and have to intention of looking it!

displayuntilbestbefore · 08/02/2010 19:42

"No one has convinced me so far that my OP was misguided- in fact it has just confirmed my thoughts that 90% of British women don't give a toss about their skin or how they look. "

I don't think that the posts on this thread represent 90% of the female population of Britain. I also fail to believe that not wearing make up is an indication of a woman who doesn't care how she looks.
That's what the cosmetics industry would like us to believe, otherwise they wouldn't be able to sell their products, but wearing or not wearing make up has no bearing on a woman's ability to look as good as she can and exude confidence.

sungirltan · 08/02/2010 19:42

there was one post a few pages back claiming that op wasn't being v feminist.

even germaine greer wears make up

mrsruffallo · 08/02/2010 19:46

Well, I exercise a lot and eat very healthily, so I have quite a nice glow
I do care about my skin, infact I love my skin in it's natural state, that's why I don't wear make up!

tinierclanger · 08/02/2010 19:48

This is bonkers! Look, I agree that makeup quite often would make people look a bit better, in a more groomed way. But IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER IF IT DOESN'T MATTER TO THEM!

Why on earth do you care so much. PP?

Y'know, some days, I just don't want to bother as much, with either clothes or makeup. It makes me happy that I feel relaxed enough to do that and not worry about it. And I appreciate the dressing up bit all the more for it. But I do think it's fine if women want to do it all every day too. People are all different - is that a revelation to you?

treehugga · 08/02/2010 19:56

Has anyone mentioned that make up just makes your skin feel real cloggy?

Booyhoo · 08/02/2010 20:10

tbh if you wash everyday then BO isnt a problem. it is only stale sweat that smells. deo isnt really necessary. again its the cosmetics companies telling us we need it when we dont.

would love OH to grow a beard to see what he looked like.

would gladly go without shaving underarms or legs if it wasnt so itchy.

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/02/2010 20:10

treehugga - only if you plaster it on. I only use face powder as a covering, so my skin still feels peachy soft.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 08/02/2010 20:15

I don't wear make up every day, only for work and if i go out in the evening. I do, however, spend stupid amounts of money on dermalogica so that my skin is peachy. If i wear make up too much I get spots. I have never worn foundation ever.

purplepeony · 08/02/2010 20:26

"tbh if you wash everyday then BO isnt a problem. it is only stale sweat that smells. deo isnt really necessary. again its the cosmetics companies telling us we need it when we dont."

OMG- did you not know that stale sweat is sweat that has been in your arm pits for 2 hours or more- that's how long it takes for the bacteria on your body to make you start to whiff.

Gosh, I just love the way you lot get so worked up- does it never occur to you that sometimes some of us post just to get you all whipped into a frenzy- it never fails, either!

I really don't care if anyone wants to go out looking a mess, but I shan't.

Lothlorien · 08/02/2010 20:46

I wear make up because

  1. I have crappy spotty, red, blotchy skin that needs evening out with foundation
  1. I have pale eyes and eyebrows and a fat face, so I need mascara and eyeshadow to bring out my features

I can count the number of times I've gone out without makeup since the age of 16 on the fingers of one hand!

I wish I didn't have to wear makeup, but my self-esteem is too fragile to allow me not to! Sad really!

starshaker · 08/02/2010 20:57

I rarely wear make up simply because i dont see the point wasting 10 mins or whatever trying to make me look better when nothing is gonna change the fact im below average looking

Booyhoo · 08/02/2010 20:59

pp i must say you come across quite rude.

whenever i go without deo i dont stink. fact. and i OH has told me this himself and he is very big on personal hygiene. maybe my bacteria is cleaner than yours. perhaps its all the chemicals seeping out from you that makes you stink after 2 hours. and before you have a go i am of course joking. not making a personal attack and saying you stink. its just your attitude that is a bit whiffy.

Booyhoo · 08/02/2010 21:01

starshaker i dont think you are below average looking. i think you are a very attractive woman.

hatwoman · 08/02/2010 21:02

"even germaine greer wears make up" yes, but you wouldn't catch her trying to persuade other women that they should too.
