I have been through most the supermarket ones and apart from tres semme and aussie everything is just abit meh. I end up chucking the last inch of so away (f not more being impatient to try something new so I thought I may aswell just buy a really good shampoo etc. My hair is very very straight and fine, non coloured and I am starting to use more heat products than I used to (only dryer mainly - sometimes curling tongs) but it's all split ends, wispy, fly away and just gengerally abit crap. Not having it cut in 16 months didn't help but now I have I want to keep ontop of it. Sooo... what brands are worth the money? It's all totally new to me - I remember the brands Redkin/Redken (?), phyto (?), some loreal fun ball stuff... anyone have any advice? Thanks

OMG Molton Brown Ziao Jao shampoo and Indian Cress conditioner!!! The most fabulous hair stuff I have ever used - have not been able to afford it since credit crunch began

I think you can only get it online at the MB website now, as they have stopped selling it in the shops for some stupid reason.
Always made my hair thick, glossy, easy to manage, non-greasy and smelt gorgeous....God I miss it!!

scaryhairycat · 02/02/2010 13:55

I have fine, fly-away (naturally) poker-straight hair and it worked a treat for me - I never let a day go by without heat or over night curl styling it either, so my hair gets plenty of wear and tear.
It costs about £14.50 a 300ml bottle though, so shampoo and conditioner + postage will set you back around £35!! Last ages though.

I have two experienced hairdresser friends (love being in my forties!) who've both said all shampoo is basically mostly water and detergent with some essential oils (or similar) to create a nice smell. They've also said Redken and Joico are the only two brands that they know of that can improve the structure and strength of hair.

If you can afford to care about what happens to the waterways when it all goes down the drain, then Modern Organic Products (MOP) and Aveda are completely gorgeous and seem very good. I've used Akin before too and while it's not as good as the previous two, the smell's fab (we're all so easily seduced by smell, after all).

matildarosepink · 02/02/2010 15:52

Forgot something else: Apparently Toni & Guy shampoos and conditioners are pretty rubbish (that detergent thing again) and not at all worth the money, but their styling products are excellent... have a look in 21st Century Beauty Bible (found a copy in the library)by Josephine Fairley or on makeupalley.com for really good objective opinions to try to match your hair type. Youtube's got some wicked footage of styling advice too!

Philip Kingsley Body Building shampoo makes my fine, flyaway hair really manageable. Smells nice too. I get it in John Lewis, about £13. Lasts ages because you don't need much.

dottyaboutstripes · 02/02/2010 17:24

Sebastian Body Double. Amazing.

Chunkyrice · 02/02/2010 17:39

joico

ArcticRoll · 02/02/2010 17:41

Aveda Shampure range

woowa · 02/02/2010 17:44

Aveda. But I use Body Shop. Only wash hair once a week (v dry, no grease) so doesn't work out as expensive as it could.

Katiekitty · 02/02/2010 19:59

(still Batiste going on strong for six days now - I am skanky) Aiming for a wash tomorrow though!

please ignore this, it adds nothing to the debate

Bumperlicious · 05/02/2010 20:06

Bumping as I want some advice too. It's my birthday next month and I might ask for some posh shampoo. Where can you buy Redken from?

I also have fine, poker straight hair, prone to greasiness (as fine hair usually is).

LouMacca · 05/02/2010 20:34

Bumper - my hair sounds similar to yours.

I have started to use Tigi Catwalk Fashionista Shampoo, Conditioner and Smooth and Shine hair products. My hair feels great, is shiny and feels thicker. It also smells absolutely devine...........

They sell it at good hairdressers (and probably bad one too!)

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 05/02/2010 21:23

I've just discovered Morrocan Hair Oil (thanks to MN) and it doesn't seem to matter what shampoo or conditioner I use any more; just rub in a teaspoonful before drying and it comes out looking as if I've had a professional blow dry.
No more dry ends and floppy layers, it seems to give my hair 'weight' without flattening it iyswim.
Deffo a money no object product: about £28 a bottle, but worthit IMO.

FuriousGeorge · 05/02/2010 23:15

My favourite was Aveda Sapmoss-sadly now discontinued.I've always had 'meh' hair, but got a lot of compliments after using this.

Avoid shampoo altogether and wash with a silicone-free conditioner like Original Source. Condition with a richer one from a health food store which has no silicone, like hemp oil oe similar, and leave a little in when rinsin. Your hair will thank you.

Bumperlicious · 06/02/2010 09:33

Really BOF? What sort of hair do you have though? I imagine mine would get really greasy without shampoo.

truthisinthewine · 06/02/2010 09:47

have you tried any from Lush? They are fantastic and not full of sillicones like a lot already mentioned on this thread are.

Their Big shampoo is my current favourite...a bit different to 'normal' shampoo but does a fab job.

BitOfFun · 06/02/2010 12:21

You could be right, Bumperlicious My, you are reasonable

Chandon · 06/02/2010 18:13

Aussie for me, have tried more expensive ones but come back to Aussie! (have straight fine hair).

Bumperlicious · 06/02/2010 21:40

Thanks BOF, I just keep getting more and more so

MrsTH · 06/02/2011 21:29

Aveda Brilliant

ullainga · 06/02/2011 21:43

Kerastase Nutritive

forget all the above, i am a hairdresser withover 20 years exp and the best ever is bumble & bumble, for you i would recomend the thickening shampoo and conditioner. it contains wheat proteins with moisturise, seal and smooth split/flyaway hair and silk fibres which attatch to your hair soaking up oil as it comes through the scalp wich will make your volume last longer. the conditioner is rich but lightweight at the same time and is completely colour compatible. it retails for £17 and £18 for 8oz that if used every day should last for at least 6-8 weeks. it is highly concentrated, you dont need more than a 5p size dollop.
honestly it really isnt woth buying supermarket brands if you have fine hair, if you have got great thick hair then you can cope with all the silicones etc but not fine hair. thats why your hair feels great when you try a new shampoo, cheap shampoos just build up plastic and the soap dries your hair out...vicous cycle.
the WORST professional brand i have ever worked with is tigi bedhead/catwalk etc...it is now owned by proctor and gamble, why you see it in tkmax etc. it truly is awful cheapy results (but overpriced) stuff...bit like toni and guy in general!!
i hope you try, as you can see i am very passionate about hair and about bumble & bumble!
