How much do you spend on shampoo?

I was rather surprised that DW had spent 50 pounds on a bottle of shampoo and some sort of hair nourishing cream (both Kerastase).

Are these products any better than the ones costing a fiver?

bloody hell! HOW much?

And I thought I was pushing the boat out when I bought a £4 bottle!

Well, you tell us if they are any better. What's her hair like? Do you think it looks better? feels softer?

I hope it bloody does for that price!

displayuntilbestbefore · 14/01/2010 22:26

{shock] at £50!
I have lustrous hair and am sure could win awards in hair pageants but even when I'm splashing out on a salon-bought shampoo I don't spend more than a tenner per bottle.
Kerastase is nice stuff but I fail to see how it can be so much better than lesser priced items when it's all essentially made of the same ingredients.

gaelicsheep · 14/01/2010 22:27

Crikey. I buy one of those huge bottles of TreSemme when they're on offer. They last months and I haven't found a better one (haven't tried a £50 one though).

displayuntilbestbefore · 14/01/2010 22:27

meant to put a after my hair pageant comment btw - wouldn't be caught dead parading my mane around in front of judges!

SixtyFootDoll · 14/01/2010 22:27

JEeeez!
I but whatevers on offer in Boots/ Sainsburys.
Dont kno if they are better, would never bring myself to spend that much to compare.

PacificDogwood · 14/01/2010 22:27

How much do I spend? - as little as possible ie any brand, ideally of offer, BOGOF.

Had Keratase when young and foolish: 'tis very very lovely, but not sure worth that kind of cash.

MillyR · 14/01/2010 22:28

I would spend £1-2 per bottle, but I get through a lot of shampoo. Your DW may not use much.

I don't know if the really expensive ones are any good, but would like to know.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 14/01/2010 22:28

Am quite fussy about shampoo. Buy fairly posh organic ones from health food shop - usually about £6/£7 a bottle.

BibiThree · 14/01/2010 22:31

Most I've ever spent on a bottle is £6, couldn't justify any more, £50 is just bonkers ino, unless of course her hair is like spun gold now.
Do you think they make her hair look fabulous?

NoahAndTheWhale · 14/01/2010 22:31

I bought a massive Tresemme one in July for about £3. Still going strong

SixtyFootDoll · 14/01/2010 22:33

Tresemme is like the magic porridge pot

SomeGuy · 14/01/2010 22:35

well it was 50 quid for two products, they were 25 each, to be clear.

She was sold the stuff before when she went to have her hair coloured. I didn't notice any improvement, but then the hair colour would have probably not been good for her hair.

I reckon these things are sold on a 1000% profit margin with fixed prices as a way to boost the profits of the salons (you can only buy them in salons, doncha know, although she didn't have her hair done today, so it's not as if they are providing hair consultation services along with the shampoo).

Yes, come to think of it I'm on my third bottle since DS was born. That was 3.5 years ago, so a bottle lasts more than a year. Can that possibly be right? It can't be more than my fourth anyway.

And I'm not skanky. I wash my hair every other day. Will not do it every day til we GET A SHOWER (if you're listening DH).

Lomond · 14/01/2010 22:38

I'm currently using a huge bottle of pantene which cost £1.75, very happy with it, it really agrees with my hair I really like Aussie shampoo but consider that too expensive at between £4 & £6 per bottle.

MillyR · 14/01/2010 22:41

Perhaps you need more expensive shampoo if your hair is dyed.

wigglybeezer · 14/01/2010 22:41

I've been buying neutrogena (normally about £3) for a pound in Poundland.

BibiThree · 14/01/2010 22:43

When I've got a colour my already weak hair benefits from a more expensive shampoo, but by that I mean a £6 John Frieda one rather than a £25 one, I wouldn't even know where to go to buy a £25 bottle.
Never got on with Tresemme though, does nowt for me, which is a shame because it's always on offer somewhere and looks terriffic value!

golgi · 14/01/2010 22:51

I washed my hair with own-brand baby shampoo the other day as couldn't find anything else - and it was lovely and shiny.

I buy whatever's on offer - currently enjoying some Aussie shampoo but wouldn't spend more than £4 a bottle.

I would want to know exactly what was in the £25 bottle to make it worth that, down to the last molecule - (they do know that hair is dead, don't they?)

thumbwitch · 14/01/2010 22:57

cor, that's a load of money to spend! I thought I was bad with my Aveda stuff - the small bottles are about £9, the big ones (which I get because it's cheaper) are admittedly £24 but last me for well over a year.

How much is in these bottles? are the 500ml+ or just normal size?

I didn't get on with Aussie shampoo - stripped my hair and made it very brittle. Aveda is the only shampoo I have tried in years that is kind to my hair (tis naturally pathetic, nails too, I don't do anything evil to it)

moondog · 14/01/2010 23:01

Fucking hell
£50!!!

Shampoo is just detergent.
I buy the cheapest on offer.Always. Supermarket basic stuff.Same for conditioner.

RamblingRosa · 15/01/2010 09:17

It is a lot. But then there are often threads on here about how amazing Kerastase is and how it's worth every penny. I haven't tried it myself so can't comment

Jennabelle · 15/01/2010 09:18

You are spending way to much! £50 is ridiculous! I have never spent more than £2 on a bottle of shampoo!

southeastastra · 15/01/2010 09:19

i once spent £11 on some paul mitchell stuff was worth it!

now spend about a fiver but cheapo stuff ruins my 80s highlights

aquavit · 15/01/2010 10:01

I'm surprised it cost quite that much: Kerastase shampoo is normally around a tenner a bottle, the conditioner about twenty-five. Perhaps it's a large bottle.

Anyway, yes it is miles better than cheaper stuff and should last longer. Whether you think it's worth it is up to you (well: up to your wife?).
