How much do you spend on shampoo?

I was rather surprised that DW had spent 50 pounds on a bottle of shampoo and some sort of hair nourishing cream (both Kerastase).

Are these products any better than the ones costing a fiver?

When I get my haircut the salon always tries to sell expensive 'product' too. Sometimes I get suckered in, sometimes not.

Aveda stuff is hard to ignore.

But it is always much more expensive.

WhoIsAsking · 15/01/2010 10:03

I am going to be the dissenting voice and tell you that I use Kerastate and spend that amount on shampoo.

Cheaper Online

Pass this on to your DW though - it is cheaper online

MrsMattie · 15/01/2010 10:08

£50 on shampoo seems excessive. Are you very well off?

havoc · 15/01/2010 10:09

My sister uses that stuff and has lovely, silky hair. I use own brand stuff and people comment how crap my hair is!

But £50 for shampoo. Just think of the kitkats you can buy for that. {grin]

Jewelsandgems · 15/01/2010 10:11

£50 for shampoo and conditioner is alot. I buy Redken and this is £10 per small bottle, so I can only think she has bought larger bottles which do work out much better value for money.

Cheap shampoos just mean I have to use (and buy) more styling product/electric appliances to get the same effect as doing a quick wash and dry after using redken (literally a rough dry and my hair is ready to go - not so with cheap shampoos/conditioners which leave my hair really dry and rough on the ends)

To be honest someguy, if it takes your wife half the time to do her hair (and you are, say, waiting for her for an evening out) then surely cheap hair products are really not worth the money?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/01/2010 10:17

bloody hell, its a treat for me when I have enough money to buy some celebrity hairdresser endorsed crap from Boots and usually then its only the gift packs on sale after christmas! £50?!

Natasha1 · 15/01/2010 14:16

Hi

I also use Kerastase as it helps my dry hair but NEVER from high street as it is soooo expensive.

Much cheaper online at: (sorry don't know how to do links)

Active beauty.co.uk & Gorgeous Shop.co.uk both offer 20% discount & free P&P.

I always check both sites before ordering as usually one or the other has specials offers on sets/larger sizes/bulk buy etc.

Hope this helps.....

Divatheshopaholic · 15/01/2010 14:20

having recently bought Aveda, im not shocked.
Thanks for the link Natasha1, i was planning to try Kerastase products.

xkaylax · 15/01/2010 14:20

i buy aussie so usually about £4-£5 dnt think i could spend £50 on shampoo though

expatinscotland · 15/01/2010 14:22

next to nothing. tresemme for oily hair.

the girls use that cheap smelly alberto stuff - the green apple one right now.

johnson's baby shampoo on the baby.

thighsmadeofcheddar · 15/01/2010 14:23

I buy the TIGI stuff - it's £25 for one huge bottle of shampoo and one of conditioner.
It does me about a month.

Cyb · 15/01/2010 14:23

I buy Dove stuff for dry hair its as good as anyhting I;ve tried. 2 for a quid in Asda

EldonAve · 15/01/2010 14:25

I bought Kerastase once but didn't find it that great

Now I stick with Tresemme/Pantene or similar but try to only buy when it's on offer in Boots

miche8 · 15/01/2010 14:27

I've been using redken and aveda.....can notice the difference....have blanked out the cost....i can use a cheaper one like Aussie a couple of times then i have bad hair days.

Quite fancied trying Keratase, didn't know it was that expensive....

LaurieFairyCake · 15/01/2010 14:27

hijack for thumbwitch - that would make the nice Aveda one better than my cheapy Pantene as I use 2 x 400ml bottles a month (shampoo and conditioner - in hard water area).

Do you live in a soft water area to make your shampoo go that far?

Furball · 15/01/2010 14:29

I'm with bibbitybobbitysantahat and go for organic stuff or without sodium lauryl sulfate at least.

That makes it expensive at £6 a bottle, but it does last me at least 6 months.

TBCoalman · 15/01/2010 14:30

I use supermarket own brand apple shampoo because I like the smell. Think its about a pound.

GetOrfMoiLand · 15/01/2010 14:32

Chrsit - £50!

I always spend lots on makeup and creams, however I don't push the boat out for hair. I buy the silver shampoo as have blonde highlights, the silver shampoo stops it going brassy. I buy that from a salon so that's £8 a bottle.

Conditioner is any old stuff which happens to be on special offer in the supermarket. I use old hand lotions as a substitute for hair serum (I forget who gave me that tip, but it's great) and use volumising spray, however that is only a fiver.

twittertotter · 15/01/2010 14:42

50 quid is real;ly rather excessive. the basic ingredients are the same in ALL shampoos so paying 99p or £9 really wont make a huge amount of differnece.

Your hair is essentially dead protein cells - the posh conditioners cCoat the hair to make it shiney they dont rehydrate or do antying like what they say in the science bit...

The only way you can healthier looking hair is by looking at what goes into your diet - lots of fruit and veg and plenty of water will give you glossier locks than any £50 shampoo

and just a little FTI Molton brown hand soap lotion is manufacutred by the same compnay in the same factory using the exact same ingredients( excpet perfumes) as superdrugs own brand liquid soap... the molton brown one retails for £20 the superdrug one for a couple of pounds go figure!

SixtyFootDoll · 15/01/2010 14:54

Thanks for the tip TT!

SerenityNowAKABleh · 15/01/2010 14:57

Yeah, your wife was robbed. I managed to get Kerastase Shampoo and Conditioner for £25.

Totally worth it though. My hair has never been happier

Hulababy · 15/01/2010 15:23

I buy T Gel therapuetic shampoo to help control my scalp psorasis. It is about £6-7 a bottle.

No way would I spednd £50!
