How much do you spend on shampoo?

SomeGuy · 14/01/2010 22:24

I was rather surprised that DW had spent 50 pounds on a bottle of shampoo and some sort of hair nourishing cream (both Kerastase).

Are these products any better than the ones costing a fiver?

hmmph, seems she could have got it for 40 quid online, with 20% off (they are big bottles). Still a fortune...

I wouldn't mind if I was convinced it was any different from the cheapo stuff....

I spend £50 on Bedhead shampoo and conditioner and they are 1 litre bottles so will last a long time, as I have short hair so use very little. They are better for your hair as they have very little sillicon and crap in them.

hoxtonchick · 15/01/2010 18:13

tigi bedhead stuff is ALWAYS at tkmaxx, tenner for a massive bottle.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 15/01/2010 18:14

I also use T-gel or Polytar at around 7 squid for a big bottle. Sadly, neither of them seem to be working for me at the moment but the idea of having to pay Aveda prices or somesuch scares me.

jeminJanuaryWooHo · 15/01/2010 18:17

Perhaps it was just a special treat for herself? Like, when I want to treat myself, I buy something a bit indulgent...not costing as much as £50, but I think the price thing is relative- perhaps it was an indulgent treat?

thumbwitch · 15/01/2010 23:57

Lauriefairycake - no, sorry, it's because I only wash my hair once a week or it goes mental (tis very fine and curlyish). Once when I was 14, I told girls at school this and they all went YEuch so I tried washing it twice a week - it was bone dry and frizzy as hell within a couple of weeks, so had to nurture it back to once a week. For years I used dry/damaged hair shampoo, then frequent wash shampoo once a week; then found Aveda. I blame it on my Mum for using Heavy Duty Greasy hair shampoo on me when I was young

I could probably make them last longer if I had short hair but I have long hair.

Do it anyway - much better for your hair without all the extra chemicals in! Especially the rose madder conditioner - it's lush!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/01/2010 00:02

I have practically no hair and its not worth spending money on. dd has fab waist length thick hair and dh is quire blessed with hair so I just nab a bit out of thir bottles.

zazen · 16/01/2010 00:59

Well someguy, I don't know why you are in charge of your DW's hair products - are you an expert on hair, or do you give her an allowance or something?

I use kerastase occasionally when I want to treat myself, and a bottle lasts for months as it's so rich you only need a little blob to work up a great lather, and the conditioner is fabby also. My DH uses it also and it makes his hair look really healthy. The cheapo bottles are dreadful on our hair - if I'm broke I go for Colour Aussie, which is pretty good as a cheaper alternative.

But the real question for me about your OP is: why are you monitoring your DW's cosmetic choices, and what is it to you anyway? Are you going to tell her that she's being unreasonable for treating herself because all the mums on mumsnet seem to be happy with their choices from the pound shop / BOGOF deals?

And if your DW's choices about her own hair shocks you, why don't you surprise her and buy her a few of her favourite treats online to save money if that's the issue?

I think your OP is a bit controlling TBH.

HellBent · 16/01/2010 01:10

Read whole thread and totally agree with zazen!

SomeGuy · 16/01/2010 01:31

Well I would have suggested she bought it online, had she mentioned it to me. I wouldn't spend 50 quid on something in a shop that I could buy for less online.

I do dislike wasting money, but I don't mind spending money for better things of any kind, I just wasn't convinced it was any different from the 2 pound ones and was seeking more expert counsel.

modern organic products www. modern organics 1 litre £25 great product

BitOfFun · 16/01/2010 01:55

I spend nothing on shampoo- I don't use it. I wash my hair with conditioner, and only spend about £1.50 a bottle on that.

zazen · 16/01/2010 13:40

But the question is someguy - why are you seeking expert counsel on your DW's hair product choice?

What's really going on? Why should she mention her choice of shampoo to you? Are you her judge / style consultant?
Is she not allowed to spend 50 quid on anything for herself independently of your permission / desire to be economical.

What are you going to do with the research you've had us do for you?
Are you going t suggest that she's being unreasonable for spending money on herself because most of the mums here have made different choices to her? Or is her personal decision now OK in your eyes if she's chosen a recommended and therefore valueable product?

What is this thread really about?
My gut tells me you are being controlling.

I know nobody likes to think of themselves as controlling, but you might want to see it from that point of view for a minute and not just brush my questions under the carpet saying you're seeking expert counsel.

Why are you doing the research? Why do you need to be convinced - surely your DW can make her own decisions without your need to be convinced that she has made the 'right' one in your eyes.

Again, what's really going on someguy? you don't have to answer, but do have a think about it will you?

scottishmummy · 16/01/2010 18:08

some of you see misogyny and control everywhere.i dont see anything sinister in his post.to infer control issues is absolutely bonkers.quite nasty actually

if a woman posted her partner spends £50 on grooming products, plenty would give same type response eg go to superdrug, tesco etc

muggglewump · 16/01/2010 18:32

I'd ask the same question if my BF spent that much on hair products and we don't share a home, children or finances!
I'd just be interested to know if it was worth it, nothing to do with controlling him, since I don't.

Some of you are bonkers and see abusive/controlling men everywhere.

MorrisZapp · 16/01/2010 18:37

12 quid on my beloved Loreal Vitamino Colour. Nothing else makes my hair so soft.

I've got bleach highlights and my hair needs all the help it can get!

I used to be a Boots/ supermarket shampoo girl too but it cost just as much really, as I would get bored and change before the stuff was finished, or use it a couple of times then give it away if I didn't like it.

With good shampoo you only use a tiny amount so it all evens out imo.

ShimmyYourselfHappy · 17/01/2010 08:00

Zazen get a grip.

SomeGuy, if your DW spends £50 on shampoo then I think that is a bit nuts. I get a supermarket one, costs £3-4. If you look at the back, they all have the same ingredients!

BouncingTurtle · 17/01/2010 08:15

Given our income level my DH would go nuts if I spent £50 on shampoo!!

I get my shampoos and conditioners from here.

Some organic ingredients, environmentally friendly, SLS/Parabens/silica free. I alternate the Aloe vera and seaweed shampoos and conditions, DH and the DSs use the Neem and Propolis shampoos.

Although I am a distributor for these guys so I get them at wholesale prices

Barbsieboo · 17/01/2010 09:46

Kerastase does last forever - you need much much less of it but its usually 12 - 15 pounds per product. I have started budgeting in this department and defected to Aussie products which are great.

PDR · 17/01/2010 10:01

I spend around £12.50 each on a normal sized bottle of shampoo & conditioner (Aveda) but I know they do huge 1L bottles which are around £25 each.

I agree you hardly need to use any and the difference it makes to your hair is very noticable.

It's always more expensive in the Salon tho- I buy mine online.

E45 · 17/01/2010 10:05

Zazen you sound just the wrong side of mad on this subject.

satc2bringiton · 17/01/2010 10:10

I have spent upto £15 on one bottle before but not £25. The more expensive stuff is so much better.

I normally buy the nicer ones in boots like toni & guy, Trevor Sorbie etc. I have been trying to save money recently and got the cheaper stuff but it's just awful. Will be going back to Trevor S when its 3 for 2 again!

Would love to be able to buy the really good stuff all the time.

satc2bringiton · 17/01/2010 10:12

zazen - I think OP is trying to work out if spending £25 bottle is normal for women

rainbowinthesky · 17/01/2010 10:17

I would be fuming at dh if he spent £50 on hair products. I cannot comment on the worth of shampoo at this cost as I've never spent that much. We use aussie shampoo and I resent paying £4 for a bottle.

TBCoalman · 17/01/2010 23:11

Oh, although my shampoo is very very own brand cheap, I buy it because it's my favourite.

I'd still buy it if it cost £££ because I love the apple smell and it does not irritate my scalp.

DH spends loads on socks. I'm a bit about it, I mean ffs, but if it's important to him and we are not eating spagetti hoops every night then why not?
