Fashionistas - what do you think of this?

eshermummy · 12/01/2010 16:51

Right, now first of all I will say upfront that I am not interested in any sanctimonious comments on price ok?
As it happens the item in question is heavily discounted but I'd prefer not to have my sanity/morality picked over by reference to the purchase or non-purchase of a piece of clothing.
So anyone who wants to post simply to tell me that cardigans are available for £1.50 in primark or that they last bought something in Spring 2003 don't bother .

So, this is the item - saw it today, as I said, heavily discounted and in my size .
Am a sucker for a military piece, thought it would make a good car coat for when weather picks up.

...however, there is a slight pantomime feel to it which is why I didn't snap it up immediately.

Opinions please.

(If it helps I am shortish (5 4" ish) and slim (8).)

(Will be back later, got to do tea and bathtime now.)

I think it would be good for dresing up at xmas as The Little Drummer Boy.

madwomanintheattic · 12/01/2010 16:54

i don't like it. but i have a wardrobe full of real uniforms lol, so not really tempted by the whimsy version

i do see what you mean by pantomime...

i'm not a very good person to take s&b advice from anyway lol, so ignore me, plenty of fashionistas will be along shortly

herjazz · 12/01/2010 16:55

ohsonoso

its like a kid's skeleton halloween costume

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 16:55

that si fucking dire

traceybath · 12/01/2010 16:55

No - there is a reason you didn't buy it.

Too panto indeed.

MissWooWoo · 12/01/2010 16:57

erm .... are you kidding?

looks like something your mum might knit from a pattern out of Women's Own

not my cuppa tea

FimBOW · 12/01/2010 16:58

O M G

Do you get trolls on S & B threads??? - joke

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 16:58

TBH its not good.

I can understand a military thing and it does come back season after season. But this is too much - especially the back.

And although you are smaller than me, we are the same height and I think you would need considerable height for the style not to make you look stumpy

Step away

mazzystartled · 12/01/2010 16:59

It is very er ugly directional

It will also date way more quickly understated "military" jacket

It may be Phillip Lim and I read your OP but by God you could get nicer, much cheaper (like on net-a-porter)
I say this out of wanting to save you money, not sanctimony.

FimBOW · 12/01/2010 17:01

How about this instead?

RockBird · 12/01/2010 17:02

It's hideous. Spend your money on something lovely, not something you're obviously not sure about.

Besides, people will point and laugh, sorry

LetThemEatCake · 12/01/2010 17:02

Bugger. Can't see pic. Will check later from laptop. Currently closeted upstairs bfing with just bub and iPhone for company..

RolandButter · 12/01/2010 17:02

i keep clikcing onit to admire its utter shitness

£500!!! lolol

TheChicOfIt · 12/01/2010 17:04

I think this is the sort of item that you really need to see on someone.

I am not opposed to spending money on nice things, but I do think that it's a lot of money to spend on something that you're not sure about.

MerlinsBeard · 12/01/2010 17:04

What is it for??

They are both awful but the first one is HORRIBLE!!

MissWooWoo · 12/01/2010 17:05

now the Fimbow one is much much much nicer

that other one really is a fright

sorry to harp on

TheChicOfIt · 12/01/2010 17:08

Also I can imagine the tails flapping about in the wind - it is a bit "Buttons" .

LaurieFairyCake · 12/01/2010 17:08

It's very statement in a "we saw you coming" sort of way. It's too much fuss for a cardigan.

If you are rich enough to wear it a few times, get bored and then dress agency it then yes. And I mean millionaire rich not 50k rich. I think you can do a lot better and more wearable for your money.

The problem with statement dressing is that I think you get bored of an item as quickly as you do with a cheaper one.

I could be wrong but you need to try it on with jeans and nice trousers and see if you will really wear it a fair amount over ten years or so - what bothers me with high-end pieces is shops are tremendously sniffy about returns once you've washed something and discovered it bobbled or something.

It would have to be extremely good quality and very wearable for me to buy it - but that may be because it is out of my reach unless I was really sure - I would pay that much for a dvf dress if it fitted me perfectly or a pair of Louboutins if they were exactly the right height.

If its not an expensive piece for you for a cardigan then please ignore , buy and enjoy. But I'd still be worried it didn't wash well.

BonjourIvressedeNoel · 12/01/2010 17:10

Its horrible, whether its £500 or £1 from primark. Just becuase its expensive doesn't mean its tasteful

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 17:10

Fimbows is better.

It is less.....unforgetable

LetThemEatCake · 12/01/2010 17:14

have seen it now. Sorry eshermummy, I love lots of the things you link to and value your opinions really highly but this one does remind me of my ds's halloween costume.

Which we bought from (shhh) Asda

Intergalactic · 12/01/2010 17:14

I saw something similar to this, but nice, in the Guardian the other day... hang on, will see if I can find it.

hf128219 · 12/01/2010 17:14

Oh dear, not a good look. It is too Halloween.

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 17:16

"I saw something similar to this, but nice,"

ouch !

MissWooWoo · 12/01/2010 17:19

lol Intergalactic

maybe the pic isn't doing it justice, maybe in the flesh it is beautiful? (beauty being in the eye of the beholder and all that)
