Fashionistas - what do you think of this?

Right, now first of all I will say upfront that I am not interested in any sanctimonious comments on price ok?
As it happens the item in question is heavily discounted but I'd prefer not to have my sanity/morality picked over by reference to the purchase or non-purchase of a piece of clothing.
So anyone who wants to post simply to tell me that cardigans are available for £1.50 in primark or that they last bought something in Spring 2003 don't bother .

So, this is the item - saw it today, as I said, heavily discounted and in my size .
Am a sucker for a military piece, thought it would make a good car coat for when weather picks up.

...however, there is a slight pantomime feel to it which is why I didn't snap it up immediately.

Opinions please.

(If it helps I am shortish (5 4" ish) and slim (8).)

(Will be back later, got to do tea and bathtime now.)

erm..no.just no.

i really like military style, and the other Phillip Lim jacket linked is really nice, individual and the kind of thing you might (if tamed with the right items) get much war out of.

other options - had you considered an actual vintage piece? They tend to be very slim fitting for a c19th man/boy, so possible for a petite lady?

some places will even tailor a piece for you.

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 17:23

of course jimi's HUssars Jacket would be very hard to find, but so much more worth it than a cardigan with tails...

stressheaderic · 12/01/2010 17:24

Bit much for a 'car coat'??

lambanana · 12/01/2010 17:24

Judging by the replies I think you have your answer and is probably why it is heavily discounted.

Intergalactic · 12/01/2010 17:26

Argh, can't find the bloody thing. It was navy with gold buttons and trim. I didn't actually see it in the paper, it was in one of the galleries on my iPhone, hence can't track it down now. Maybe I dreamed it as I have just looked through about 10 galleries!

I didn't think my comment was that harsh, given what everyone else had said. Sorry .

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 17:26

"the kind of thing you might (if tamed with the right items) get much war out of."

Edgar - isn't that taking the military trend a little far?

Is this the look you are after? This place is brilliant.

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 17:32

(if tamed with the right items) get much war out of.

what a fraudian slip!

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 17:33

at Intergalactic

noo , don't blush. It is just that the 'but nice' comes as a dagger through the heart in a sentence that start off so ... supportive. It just made me laugh. I am going to use that when next I shop with my mother...

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 17:35

like this?

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 17:45

indeed, that is a quotable line...and so useful eg...

'yes, my kitchen/child/husband is just like that, but nice...'

pagwatch · 12/01/2010 17:46

it is brilliant isn't it?

Sparkletastic · 12/01/2010 17:49

I can see why it is in the sale....

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/01/2010 17:53

other question - what would you wear such an item with?

crushed velvet skin tight pants?

black stirrup-trousers?

weggings??????

i'm getting all excited by the thought of c19th swashbuckling types filled with derring-do (and indeed fine legs, most fine..)

i must go to the silly thread...

nickschick · 12/01/2010 18:00

It looks like something 'buttons' would wear in the cinderella pantomime.

dexter73 · 12/01/2010 18:03

It is quite ridiculous!

ColdBunny · 12/01/2010 18:15

Absolutely hate it. I think Phillip Lim was having a bad day when he designed it!

ruddynorah · 12/01/2010 18:21

good god that is full on foul.

Earthstar · 12/01/2010 18:22

Agree Farthingale costumes MTM is the way to go - gorgeous!

BelleDameSansMerci · 12/01/2010 18:26

Well, I love a military look too (mainly a hangover from adoration of Adam Ant in the 80s) but this is a bit too past military and into comedy. And, I'm usually a lover of the most outre clothing. Don't buy this!

eshermummy · 12/01/2010 19:35

am back now
the reason I said it would make a good car coat is because it is quite chunky knit so couldn't really imagine wearing it under a coat - is more of a coat /jacket in itself iykwim.

hmmmmm, so you all hate it!
Doesn't surprise me - last time I think it was my leopard print leggings that everyone dissed

Someone said I really need to go back and try it on properly with trousers/leggings etc - think that is a good idea as wasn't wearing the right thing today so couldn't tell.

I had indeed considered wearing it over weggings with short gap biker boots and a long top. The only issue in my mind (apart from the panto issue natch) was whether it would only work with jeans as is only waist length at front so with leggings you'd be showing your crotch (I wouldn't, don't worry ) and I don't know if a crotch covering top underneath would look wrong.

If I do buy it though I will soon know who the mnetters are at the school gates -I'll have outed myself and I'll have to change my posting name!!!

Incidentally re price - I do agree £500+ is too much for a cardy - I'm actually thinking of paying less than half that but I agree it's still quite a lot.

How about this? It is very heavily discounted.

alliscalm · 12/01/2010 20:56

Eshermummy, from all your other posts, you sound like an extremely stylish if understated dresser, so this is a bit of a shock. I think the danger with you being shortish, as you say, would be that it would wear you and not the other way round.
Love dexter73's Fendi trench.

eshermummy · 12/01/2010 21:25

Dexter73 - I do like that Fendi trench - but I already have a lovely navy blue double breasted coat from last winter and wasn't looking to spend that much anyway.

Funnily enough I had this Outnet jacket in my basket ...but dithered and it has now sold out in what I think would be my size

Am delighted with all the lovely comments about how this is an aberration from otherwise impeccable S&B taste credentials

Have now asked DH who is a merciless pisstaker has a keen fashion eye to opine on the panto cardy.
