Is anyone else cross that the Next model looks on the verge of anorexia?

I think the catalogue one of the most widely recognised retailers in the UK, pored over by countless young girls no doubt, should NOT feature a model who is so thin she looks ill.

Her upper thighs and arms are just about the same or perhaps thinner than the lower and her face is getting that 'stretched' look where you can see odd muscles.

I really don't think it is on.

please may we have the link

WilfSell · 09/01/2010 18:03

The one in the first section of the new catalogue I mean.

WilfSell · 09/01/2010 18:07

OP posts:
BoysAreLikeDogs · 09/01/2010 18:07

very thin

WilfSell · 09/01/2010 18:08

and this one

morningpaper · 09/01/2010 18:09

yuck I see what you mean - you can see their bones and everything

eek

Meglet · 09/01/2010 18:09

She is a bit gangly.

I used to love the days of 'Amazonian' supermodels who had thighs wider than their knees and upper arms wider than their elbows.

JaneiteIsAWimpyTeacher · 09/01/2010 18:10

Not good. V pretty but her arms are stick-like.

pofarced · 09/01/2010 18:10

The ones mp linked to do look rather underweight - the clue is in the upper arms. When people say anorexia is not influenced by media images, it is to do with feelings of self hate, it is not quite true. It usually begins with worries over body image, very much influenced by the images around you. I speak from experience. Probably those who are susceptible are those who are insecure and have less confidence, but the trigger is definitely images of women as presented in the media.

JodieO · 09/01/2010 18:10

Far too thin, I'm shocked they used models that look like they have an eating disorder, great role models.

pofarced · 09/01/2010 18:12

sorry saw all the links now - yes they all look starved - thighs same width and calves and upper arms same width as lower. Depressing this still goes on really.

WilfSell · 09/01/2010 18:13

that hip/ribcage thing is just too wrong

OP posts:
morningpaper · 09/01/2010 18:15

gosh Wilf those images are terrible

Why wouldn't they see that's bad?

pofarced · 09/01/2010 18:15

Kate Moss said apparently that 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels' Should think that is pretty standard across the industry.

pofarced · 09/01/2010 18:18

Someone will come on and say 'I'm 5 stone and 6 foot tall and I eat like a horse' and yes there are some women like that but it is not the norm. And I very much doubt that model is 'naturally' as thin as that. She will definitely be slim, but she does look very ill.

ArrietyClock · 09/01/2010 18:19

While I don't want to see all models looking like that either - for the same reasons you don't - perhaps you'd like to bear in mind that for some of us, that is NORMAL. As in, some of us can eat huge amounts and still look like that (though sadly perhaps a bit less proportioned and without the face!). It grieves me that thin kids go to hell and back while at school (yes, you get bullied for it even if all the catalogues are full of it), and as adults still have to put with commnts like 'yuck'.

Why can't we just accept that the norm covers the whole spectrum?

WorzselMummage · 09/01/2010 18:19

Blimy they are verging on emeciated.

The thighs on the first photo cannot be real can they ?

WilfSell · 09/01/2010 18:20

I was just about to post that any second now, someone will be on to say either

  1. this is normal you know

or

b. you're just all jealous you fat cows

OP posts:
badietbuddy · 09/01/2010 18:20

I suspect they just have a shite airbrusher really

MrsPolarBear · 09/01/2010 18:22

"Why can't we just accept that the norm covers the whole spectrum? "

I am willing to bet my children on the fact that those models are not naturally skeletal.

DarrellRivers · 09/01/2010 18:22

hahahahahahahahahaha

am being model on the left in mp's first link

some look fashion, some look as if too small for clothes which is not good

badietbuddy · 09/01/2010 18:22

And whoever said 'but the trigger is definitely images of women as presented in the media.' clearly has a very limited understanding of anorexia.

AnyFucker · 09/01/2010 18:23

Next do seem to be using moels that are thinner than ever

I always thought they would use slim ones, but these are positively skeletal

Earthstar · 09/01/2010 18:23

The ultra skinny next model photos are FOUL
