Is anyone else cross that the Next model looks on the verge of anorexia?

I think the catalogue one of the most widely recognised retailers in the UK, pored over by countless young girls no doubt, should NOT feature a model who is so thin she looks ill.

Her upper thighs and arms are just about the same or perhaps thinner than the lower and her face is getting that 'stretched' look where you can see odd muscles.

I really don't think it is on.

AF: I'm fairly sure it is my ex-husband's partner, who is severely anorexic. She lives on morphine in a wheelchair as she has organ failure. She was given six months to live but that was a few years ago - she can't eat food but sucks medical 'gels' which have nutrients in. I think that is her in the photo. She is quite well known.

itchyandscratchy · 11/01/2010 20:10

IF you could hear some of the things the teenage and pre-teen girls that I teach come out with, you'd know for sure that media images affect them and make them feel worthless and ugly. It's horrific.

Has anyone contacted next at all? is this the way to go or do we just lie back and accept it as 'par for the course'?

pofarced · 11/01/2010 20:26

Oh MP.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2010 20:26

good god, mp

how sad

morningpaper · 11/01/2010 20:27

Yes it IS very sad. Her own mother died from anorexia when she was in her 30s too.

AnyFucker · 11/01/2010 20:30

it's another world, innit < naive >

morningpaper · 11/01/2010 20:32

Yah, she does, frankly, look pretty much like those models though, sorry

She is okay some of the time, runs support groups and helplines for people with eating disorders - she tries to help others

pofarced · 11/01/2010 20:37

So awful she can't recover, and with her mother dying from it - terrible.

monkeysmama · 11/01/2010 21:04

Hey Itchy. I complained by email but haven't had any response. I think we should complain about these kind of things. I don't know how much difference it makes but I imagine someone sat round the table looking at the images for the catalogue must've felt uncomfortable at the very least.

msrisotto · 11/01/2010 21:16

Just FYI, western women suffer far more from anorexia than the rest of the world. Women who move from the rest of the world to western society, their risk of anorexia increases. Fiji has illustrated this as since the inhabitants were exposed to TV and western society generally, the incidence of dieting and eating disorders has increased significantly.

On the other hand, anorexia has always existed but the context was religious and they are known as "holy anorexics".

Curiousmama · 11/01/2010 21:43

Yes I emailed just going to check see if I heard back?

Curiousmama · 11/01/2010 21:45

nope not yet.

franch · 11/01/2010 21:50

Let us know if you hear anything. Bigmouth achieved miracles with her thread about Tesco's nappy packets!

WilfSell · 11/01/2010 22:55

Oooh another campaign! Two in one week.

Can someone post up the relevant details of people to complain to, please?

OP posts:
monkeysmama · 11/01/2010 23:00

I emailed from the website but it kept not going through. I tried again this evening and it said I had to call to complain. Will try again tomorrow and post details if it works.

HinnyPet · 11/01/2010 23:06

Just marking place. Very interesting thread.

motherlovebone · 11/01/2010 23:38

help.next.co.uk/Section.aspx?ItemId=10148

I'll let you know if I get any response.

notasize10yetbutoneday · 12/01/2010 14:44

I emailled this: not very well planned or thought out but I was so incensed at seeing those images i was shooting from the hip, as it were:

Sir/Madam

I am a regular purchaser of Next clothing and as such was keen to view the new spring collection online. However, I was immediately shocked to note that the vast majority of the models used are grossly underweight. In particular I would direct you to:
www.next.co.uk/shopping/women/tailoredlooks/2/2?r=U5107&utm_source=buy.at&utm_medium=affili ate&utm_campaign=
where it is patently obvious that this model is not of a healthy height/weight ratio.

I would urge you to consider the potential risk in using and therefore supporting models who do not have the recommended BMI of 18-25.

as a stalwart of the high street appealing to women across several demographics I feekl that Next must act responsibly in engaging models who are of a healthy weight which at present it is clearly not.

I look forward to receiving your comments on what I consider to be a pressing and potentially damaging issue.

Yours Faithfully

monkeysmama · 12/01/2010 16:18

I've emailed again and been told I should hear in 24 hours via email. Has anyone had a response? I was thinking about posting something about it on Gok Wan's real beauty website (not sure what it's called but remember there being a search for a real model...?)

monkeysmama · 12/01/2010 16:20

This is what I meant but can't see anyway of mentioning it. Just thought it might be the kind of thing they'd take up.

franch · 12/01/2010 17:07

There is a box to post comments on that page monkeys - ?

sazzlelou · 12/01/2010 19:59

Sorry if you dont want wany more images linking but whilst browsing came across this
one

IMO much to thin to be in a catalogue, looks childlike, but if young then should not be modelling a thong

motherlovebone · 12/01/2010 20:53

thats great notasize
could have done with that before sending my disjointed mishmash!
come on MN
get them thinking
