Is anyone else cross that the Next model looks on the verge of anorexia?

I think the catalogue one of the most widely recognised retailers in the UK, pored over by countless young girls no doubt, should NOT feature a model who is so thin she looks ill.

Her upper thighs and arms are just about the same or perhaps thinner than the lower and her face is getting that 'stretched' look where you can see odd muscles.

I really don't think it is on.

Only just seen this thread. Quite shocked really, usually the models they use are slim attractive women that I would like to look like, the models linked to are way too skinny not healthy looking at all.

itchyandscratchy · 13/01/2010 16:34

I'm trying to think of a columnist/sleb figure that might be interested in taking this up as a bit of a cause: someone who has spoken/written about this previously but who could act now using these images as a way in.

India Knight?
Dove - campaign for Real Beauty? (they do some great resource packs for teaching this in schools)
Caryn Franklin (ex-clothes show) has written/commented about this
Viv Groskop in The Guardian ran this piece

(ha ha keep thinking of Hannah Waterman who did a piece on the Andrew Neil show the other night about sleb pressure to diet which I thought was highly ironic. and even if we did ask her, I dont know that she'd be too flattered by the MN threads on her recently )

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 13/01/2010 19:52

Good idea itchy.

Yes, Caryn Franklin would be great.

Don't think it could be Dove - a big corporate vs another big corporate, wouldn't work as well as a serious journalist with a keen interest in the issue.

franch · 13/01/2010 21:01

Yes good thinking itchy - how would we go about that?

HinnyPet · 13/01/2010 23:32

Alesha Dixon is quite high profile, and vocal about not wanting to be skinny.

monkeysmama · 14/01/2010 21:03

Is Gok Wan and his "real women" campaign not the way to go? See other thread about responses from Next to our complaints but so far they've been crap.

franch · 19/01/2010 09:59

monkeys - can you link to the other thread? I can't find it. Have had an utterly rubbish response too and would like to discuss it.

Glad to see you lot doing something about this...I was just looking thru the directory the other day and said to myself 'god, she needs to eat a few chips'. Thought all that unhealthy skinny-chic was in the past....not so by the looks of it.

monkeysmama · 20/01/2010 10:19

Here you go franch. I emailed on Monday to ask when I should expect a proper reply but heard nothing.

franch · 20/01/2010 10:35

Thanks monkeys. Have posted the reply I've received on that thread.

RocheMoutonee · 20/01/2010 11:21

WHAT DO you want them to DO though?
