Tell me everything that is bad about this dress

I made the mistake of visiting a Monsoon shop and pretending I could afford any of their clothes. I saw this dress and tried it on. It was a perfect fit and just looked absolutely stunning.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything new for myself or the last time I looked so good in an outfit.

But I can't afford it and never will, so tell me all the horrible things about it so I can persuade myself that it's not worth the money anyway.

You would wear it once and then it would hang in your wardrobe.

The neck is too high.

It is a bit too shiney.

You would need to buy something else to wear over it AND new shoes.

Actually - it's lovely - but the high neck would look awful on me.

cookielove · 22/11/2009 16:19

it is really nice, it has a lovely shape and i can imagine you look stunning in it, reminds me of a dress i had but can't fit into anymore (sob) that made me feel wonderful in

SausageRocket · 22/11/2009 16:20

erm.

Satiny fabrics are really unforgiving and will show every lump and bump even if you are skinny.

You can't wear a bra with it (a problem for me).

Erm

I was expecting it to be typical monsoon and so was ready with frumpy middle aged hippy things to say to put you off but that is a really nice frock. Bugger

Clure · 22/11/2009 16:23

0n the plus side think it is a timeless dress and it could be worn over again for special occasions/christmas. I remember buying a 2 piece black satin bustier type top and matching skirt from principles about 6 years ago and I cried at the price tag, It comes out EVERY christmas and has earned its keep in my wardrobe! Sorry you wanted bad points??

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 16:27

It IS timeless and I would wear it when we visited my dad for Hogmanay - we're out to a 'do' he's booked for us.

But true, we certainly don't get out much. However not having any classy clothes in my wardrobe this would be lovely to have.

And I am very small chested so the high neck suits - plus it really isn't that shiny when you see it. It gave me a lovely smooth shape dammit! Perhaps they'll have it in the January sales?

Oh it's not fair! I never have anything new!

I really need to find a job that pays. Perhaps looking at this dress will give me the incentive to keep going.

Will dp be buying you a Christmas present? Could this be it?

bigTillyMint · 22/11/2009 16:29

Very nice

If you're feeling really worried about the cost, why don't you watch it to see if it goes on sale before Hogmanay?

sweetheart · 22/11/2009 16:40

Rhubarb,

I also found a dress which I love in Ted Baker but have no event to justify the dress and the price tag, BUT I saw your thread and it reminded me of that dress so on the of change I browsed Ebay.

I have found the dress brand new, ends in 30mins AND it's at £23! For that money I am definatly going to bid on it!

Go and look for your dress on Ebay my lovely!

i second christmas present. then you'll have a go-to outfit every year at christmas or special occasions like your new year do.

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 16:54

sweetheart - aw that just made my day to hear that! I have looked on ebay and found the dress but not in my size. I'm a size 8 and those sizes don't come up on ebay very often.

I have showed dh the dress but he said that £75 is a ridiculous price for a dress and that I never go anywhere nice enough to wear it

Riven, I really can't buy it. ds's birthday is coming up soon and then I've got their Christmas presents to buy. I can't splash out £75 on me when I've told dd she can't have a Nintendo DS because of the price. I'd rather spend it on them really.

I'll keep looking on ebay in the meantime. Besides dh is right, I really don't go anywhere to be able to wear a lovely dress like that anyway. I don't need it, it's a luxury item and I'm now going to forget about it.

boring as fuck dress. high necks make people look like they have massive tits and no neck.

upahill · 22/11/2009 16:56

There is nothing wrong with this dress at all.
Ok it may show lumps and bumps - that's why we have Spandex.
You don't have to wear it once. I can think of many occassions you would wear this and look different. Eg Different coloures shoes, with/without a shawl type thing. It is a classic.
If I didn't have 9 LBD that I recycle to different meals out I'd consider it!( Some of them I've had for nearly 20 years and were extremley expensive at the time but I'm glad I got them)
It's (In the scheme of things) not expensive for a classic.
The trouble of waiting for the sales (And I've learnt this to my cost) it may sell out.

badietbuddy · 22/11/2009 16:56

It'd be a bugger to wash.
But yes, I second Ebay. I bought a Monsoon dress for my summer ball for a third of the shop price, and it was brand new. I sold it on for twice what I had paid for it

AnyFucker · 22/11/2009 16:56

rhubarb, I can give you a fiver towards it love, from my birthday money

It's down to £70 now...

Could you ask for Monsoon vouchers for Christmas?

bran · 22/11/2009 17:00

I bet it would have to be dry-cleaned after every wear. I hate dry-clean only clothes, it's such a faff and it's expensive.

You'd probably get white marks under the arms from your anti-perspirant.

If you dared to actually sit down in it it would probably go all creased across the front of your hips.

Would you be able to wear a bra? It's quite a low back.

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 17:03

AnyFucker, there is no way on this earth I would take your birthday money from you!

No I just wanted someone to say rimmer08 is saying and yes it would be a bugger to wash.

There are more important things in life than a dress and it is expensive at £70. I'll keep looking on ebay and who knows, but I'm already over it, really! Am now searching ebay for lego kits for ds.

Thanks Bran, you're right
If I didn't wear a bra I'd look like a boy!

Bellsa · 22/11/2009 17:04

Money for Christmas and then into the sales you go and try to get it before NYE? And keep trying E-Bay, bet it'll be full of stuff after Christmas.

upahill · 22/11/2009 17:06

Well... (Being devils advocat here!) If you used Mitchem anti- perspirant there wouldn't be any white patches. You wouldn't have to dry clean it every time you wore it unless you were extremly sweaty and smelly which I'm guessing your not!
All it would need is hanging on a line for a bit of fresh air, failing that Fabrieze!!

Go on ......... you know you want to !!!!!

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 17:11

I'm going to make the tea. I want to hear lots of horrible things about it to really put me off.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 22/11/2009 17:12

If you have the figure for something so unforgiving you should buy it! I love it its elegant timeless and not a bad price for something classic
