Tell me everything that is bad about this dress

I made the mistake of visiting a Monsoon shop and pretending I could afford any of their clothes. I saw this dress and tried it on. It was a perfect fit and just looked absolutely stunning.

I can't remember the last time I bought anything new for myself or the last time I looked so good in an outfit.

But I can't afford it and never will, so tell me all the horrible things about it so I can persuade myself that it's not worth the money anyway.

I didn't win the dress - got outbid in the last 20 seconds! It's this one www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Ted+Baker+Rowe+fitted+occasionwear+dress/128882273,default,pd.html?cgid=301 and it went from £26 to £69 in 3 mins!

I will keep looking though and you should do the same Rhubarb!

Clure · 22/11/2009 18:07

aw sweetheart thats a nice frock, maybe another may come up on ebay?

rhubarb I am also size 8 with minimal chest - I have tried those stick on bra cups with a backless dress, they ok for a one off night out! think I got mine for £4 from matalan!

fatzak · 22/11/2009 18:16

Do you live anywhere near any of the Monsoon seconds shops? Might be worth a look to see if there's anything in there?

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 18:27

I didn't know Monsoon had such things as second shops!

sweetheart, that is such a shame! I was bidding on a box of lego bits for ds that started off at £6 and finished for around £20. It's those last vital minutes that count isn't it?

Ebay do have the dress for £45 just not in my size, so I'll keep a good lookout just in case.

And tbh, when I tried the dress on I can't remember the bra thing being an issue, I think it just about covered it at the back. I know I had a good spin round and can't remember seeing my bra strap showing at the back.

Whenever you buy anything from monsoon and where it to an event there are at least 3 other women wearing the same thing.

Morosky · 22/11/2009 18:29

Rhubarb are you up north? Cheshire Oaks have a monsoon outlet, is that near you?

FWIW I think it is quite a classic dress and would be a good investment buy

CarGirl · 22/11/2009 18:37

It's not that special or different for a little black dress, same one in a colour that looks stunning on you would be a better buy.

Rhubarb · 22/11/2009 18:38

Morosky! You're meant to be putting me off! You started really well in your first post!

I'm in Wiltshire. I've contacted the woman who's selling the two dress in sizes 12 and 14 just in case she knows where to get a size 8 for the same price.

But I'm going to forget about it now. No point in dwelling on what I can't have. I'm watching a bag of mixed lego on ebay for ds, currently at just £2.10 but they are going for stupid prices in the last few minutes. I might be better off during the week when it's quieter.

Rhubarb why can't your DH buy it for you for christmas? Or, is there any old clothes you can sell on ebay to raise all/some of the money for it?

It is a lovely classic dress and I think if you used the cost-per-wear it would probobley work out very reasonable.

And as for your DH saying you have nowhere to wear it, put it on, go to your local posh bar or hotel, sit and sip lime and soda [something like 50p a glass]

SixtyFootDoll · 22/11/2009 20:06

£70 is not too bad a price for a dress, cheaper than a top and skirt

Rhubarb · 23/11/2009 10:34

Clure, that's a good site, will keep my eye on that one.
Herbietea how gutting. That is a lovely dress! I have very small boobs and tbh it's really hard to find anything that fits me because I'm tall but skinny and quite flat-chested, so clothes tend to hang. The reason I like this Monsoon dress so much was that it made me look as though I had curves, it was really flattering.

I've asked dh for some Monsoon vouchers for Christmas, just hope it doesn't sell out.

Rhubarb, it is a very classy dress and I am sure you would get your wear out of it, but if the money isn't there it isn't there.

However, I am pretty sure that Monsoon had a huge sale just before Christmas last year. If you can hold your nerve you may well get your dress with a big discount in the week leading up to Christmas.

I hope that you get it for a bargainous price!

mumof2222222222222222boys · 23/11/2009 12:37

Second others..

It is a lovely dress...but they do good sales. I bought a dress for about £20 this summer. Nice summer dress, but nothing too special. No way would I have bought it for £70 it was originally on for.

Good luck with the wait!

OrmIrian · 23/11/2009 12:44

Erm....... sorry rhubs. It's lovely.

itsmeolord · 23/11/2009 13:19

Topshop have a tiered dress that is very very similar in green. It has the high neck and same shoulder shape, I think new look have something as well.

Rhubarb · 23/11/2009 16:17

Looked through Top Shop and New Look and can't find anything similar that I like.

I'm just wondering about the back now, I can't remember my bra showing when I tried it on but now I'm paranoid as it does look low cut at the back. If you wear a black bra do you think it would look ok?

It's going to be a pain to clean
It will be difficult to sit down in (maybe)
... helping at all?

Hullygully · 23/11/2009 16:29

Buy it. Go on, you have the rest of your life to earn the money. Fuck it. Get it. You might be run over tomorrow.

Clure · 23/11/2009 18:50

don't know if this appeals not keen on the colour myself but style is nice

Rhubarb · 23/11/2009 19:28

This one? I know what you mean about the colour and you can't see the back of it. Also I've nothing to hold it up, I need straps or it'd just slide down - trust me!

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 23/11/2009 19:29

Ah, it doesn't want to give a link to the dress in question. Oh well, I don't think teal is my colour though.

OP posts:
ConnorTraceptive · 23/11/2009 19:36

Can't do links they never work for me! But I just got a lovely dress from matalan for £28 it's listed on the site as a chiffon pleated shift dress. Similar cut to the monsoon one

Calamansi · 23/11/2009 23:00

Try - dare i say it, politics aside - primark they have a similiar dress for £17...
