Right, I need some non-foundation wearers to join me in a little experiment

So having realised everyone wears foundation everyday I think it is time to give it a proper go....

I thought I would wear it everyday for a week and see if anyone magically says 'you are looking well TMAM'. If they don't notice, I shan't continue

Anyone else want to join me? I shall be using Clinique Barely There spf 15

Hasseld and Maveta - I've also done the reverse test. Was quite depressing...

I concluded that to look 'healthy' (so not like Death Warmed Up) I need to wear tinted moisturiser and to look 'really well' I need to wear foundation. But then I liked looking 'really well' so now I always wear foundation.

EllieorOllie · 09/11/2009 12:29

I'm hopelessly indecisive about my base. Have been wearing the new rimmel stay matt stuff as i get very shiny, but it has brought me out in horrible zits. So at the weekend I got some barbara daly for tesco 'face lift', which is essentially a moisturizer with sparkly bits in it, in an attempt to get rid of the clogginess and spots. I wore it today with a bit of loose powder and 1 person has commented that I look well slept, and another that I look very 'fresh'. Which is kind of like saying i look crap the rest of the time. But hey ho, the sparkly moisturizer obviously works!

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/11/2009 16:47

Day 1 debrief for me:

  • it was quite hot today
  • I felt slimey and ever so slightly shiny all day
  • perhaps it is best not to put it on too soon after finishing running
  • I went to see what make up there is on offer here, I found one Mac 2 in 1 compact that looked promising but it was £50
  • the only other alternative was a brand called White Rose, popular in Turkey I believe but I'm not that desperate

No bugger noticed the difference

Still there's always tomorrow. I'll try with The Bookclub. They are a discerning lot.

Never wear it. But don't wear much make up anyway.

I have my eyelashes tinted and permed, so it looks as if I've got mascara on all the time.

So, if I have to, all I need is to slap on some lippy/lip gloss.

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/11/2009 16:56

You've got permed eyelashes? Are they all kind of curly and corksrewy?

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 09/11/2009 17:01

I have very long eyelashes, but they grow straight. The perm simply curls them upwards, as would happen if you used eyelash curlers - except that it lasts for about 6 weeks.

Bleenherbe · 09/11/2009 17:11

I am dropping in to recommend Chantecaille - i think it's the one called future skin - thick liquid / cream in a pot. It's lovely and actually really is a bit "dewy". But not sure how i could ever afford to wear it every day - anyone know something a bit similar but much cheaper?

Rollmops · 09/11/2009 17:33

Why not take good care of your skin and reap the compliments for 'its lovely glow'....
[very vain and anti-foundation Rollmops]

TrillianAstra · 09/11/2009 17:40

I was tempted for a minute there, then I thought: what if I do get good comments? I'd have to keep doing it!!!

I actually think blusher/bronzer would make more of a difference than foundation to my 'looking well-ness'

From a completely bare face I would say mascara is the first thing you should start with, so I'll assume you already have that.

MaggieMonday · 09/11/2009 17:49

I find foundation a bit much every day as well, so I mix the palest of the oil of olay foundation/moisturiser (there are three) with the palest shade of l'oreal age serum make up.

I';m not that pale thoguh... but make ups always seem to dark.

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/11/2009 17:57

Maggie I was just looking at that Olay stuff online, is it no good then on it's own?

suiledonne · 09/11/2009 18:35

Not a good day to start my experiment. Weather was awful so we didn't leave the house.

No visitors either so no one to notice.

Awaiting DH's return to see his reaction.

Indith · 09/11/2009 18:42

I have a pot of clinique something I got for my wedding. I wear it once every month or so if that when having a bad "I need make up to make me human" day and nobody ever notices.

KristinaM · 09/11/2009 19:35

i will join you in your experiment margaritas. though i cant start tomorrow as I'm at the gym first thing [show off emoticon] and then going straight into work

i will also be using no7 tinted moisturiser. all the foundations i've tried ( admittedly not very many) are too pink for me

MaggieMonday · 09/11/2009 19:58

Well, the master, even the fairest one is too dark for me. I'm Irish but I'm not like nicola from girls alound or anything. JUst paleISH... I like the way it goes on though, it feels quite nice.

I always have to mix foundations. The ivory one is always a bit tooo deathly pale, I look like I need a pint of blood immediately! and the next shade up makes me look orange.

HEAVEN only knows how other people manage to find the right shade of make up for their skin. I have been doing this mixing thing with a pale and a not so pale make up for years, but it works well enough. It's easy and you can also pick one lighter consistency one and one with good coverage so you're getting a not so thick cover. You don't look like a blank canvas!

cos unless you then sit down to draw back in all your features, it can look a bit weird if your cover is too good.

I just put on a tiny bit of pale blusher after foundation, just to paint back on a bit of face. that's it... not even lipstick as it's gone after a cup of tea.

YouDoughnut · 09/11/2009 21:01

Hmm... I'm about to start a new job and was wondering if I should start wearing foundation. I do this for about 3 days every time I start a job and then decide I can't be arsed. I'm getting to an age when I should perhaps stick with it though. My problem is finding the time to do this in the morning and, mainly, how to take it all off at night.

Can anyone advice on the basics of make-up removal, other than those horrible wipes?

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/11/2009 11:56

I forgot that part last night.

So day 2, it doesn't feel quite so weird today. I am still shiny. And I am quite disappointed that I can still see wrinkles.

There appears to be a distinct lack of effort on the part of my guinea pigs.

HeadFairy · 10/11/2009 11:59

I've been following your thread for a day now and as a dedicated foundation wearer (I've got loads of wierd pigment patches) can I recommend Lily Lolo mineral foundation for those of you who don't like the shiney ness and feel liquid foundations are a bit odd. It's just like dusting on a bit of powder so it doesn't feel heavy or claggy, and as a super shiney faced person, I can tell you, you don't get half as much shine as with liquid make ups.

Definitely worth a try if you like wearing foundation but not the sliminess.

HeadFairy · 10/11/2009 12:00

Oh and because it's mineral make up, in theory it doesn't matter if you don't take it off at night!

MarshaBrady · 10/11/2009 12:02

oops that's me. I haven't bought a new one yet and am still gaily lolloping around with nowt on but a bit of mascara.

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/11/2009 12:10

Marsha! You will ruin the scientific nature of my experiment

Thanks HF that sounds just what I need, am off to google.

MarshaBrady · 10/11/2009 12:17

I am too (pregnant) and lazy to shop!

I shall reassess forthwith.

hatwoman · 10/11/2009 12:22

I used to wear make up everyday, inc foundation. and I have to admit to having the reverse effect when spotted not wearing it. worse, I have to admit it was deliberate. I was off sick and, although it was genuine, thought it might not harm to return to work looking a bit wan. so I went in wearing no make up at all. definitely got me some extra sympathy .

I don;t think I can join your experiment - because I'm quite variable these days. Sometimes wear nothing, sometimes a dash of touche eclat, powder and mascara, sometimes foundation, touche eclat and mascara. but I really reckon it's the touche eclat and the mascara that makes the difference.

MaggieMonday · 10/11/2009 12:26

hatwoman, I used to do that on the rare occasions I was sick. Even though it was genuine... I felt I'd be given forty lashes for having the temerity to be ill between mondday and friday.

youdonut what's wrong with the wipes. Just once I had a facial, and the girl was banging on and on about how awful they were and saying I should use muslin squares and cleansing milk blah blah blah.... then, after telling me how awful they were, she guessed my age at 35 and I'm 39, so there you go! not that dreadful obviously. I've been using them since they've been invented.

YouDoughnut · 10/11/2009 13:02

I don't know what's wrong with them. They just feel wrong. Off to google.
