How much would you spend on a bag?

Just curious- if you were buying a bag, one that you hoped to get a few years from, what is the most you'd pay?

OP posts:
PestoPyrotechnicsMonster · 05/11/2009 08:21

£50 tops

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/11/2009 08:22

Personally, £100-150 is the most I would pay, but that's because that's what my budget allows. If we could afford it then I think anything up to £4/500 is a good price for something I would use a lot over a period of years.

How much is the one you like? I'm guessing more than either of the figures I've said?

rosieposey · 05/11/2009 08:22

Have had a couple of Chloe bags from DH for the last couple of Christmases but see them as investments, not sure how much they were exactly but probably around the £700 ish mark.

Nowtheres4 · 05/11/2009 08:23

i have paid loads in the past, but in my defence it is still as good as new now. i paid £600 for my mulberry roxanne large tote and its fab, lasted me as a nappy bag as well as a handbag.
these days my budegt is more restricted so around £150.

southeastastra · 05/11/2009 08:23

same as pesto

do you use them rosie? i'd be scared to

Tortington · 05/11/2009 08:25

i have never paid a lot of money for a bag, but i really need something smart elegant and fashionable. something i could use for work and for daytime wear.

so i think i may very well spend between 50 - 100 for the perfect bag which i hven't seen yet

SecretNinjaChipmunk · 05/11/2009 08:29

find your bag and then hunt the internet for the cheapest place to buy it. a mulberry bag for example will last YEARS. and is beautiful and will get more beautiful with age and use. and if you live in somerset i believe they have a factory shop. bicester outlet village is good for that kind of stuff too.

Megglevache · 05/11/2009 08:34

I used to spend a tenner in Primark, I recently bought a couple of designer leather ones cheap from TKMAXX (which were £200 reduced to £39.99 and I am sold.

When I have the money I'd like to get a really spendy one.

dexter73 · 05/11/2009 08:36

Probably £50-£75 but I get bored of bags and don't want to have to keep them for too long! I usually pay £20 -£30.

claricebeansmum · 05/11/2009 08:38

£400/500 for Mulberry/Furla

Much less for anything else

rosieposey · 05/11/2009 08:53

southeastastra thats the thing, i do use them but then again i like my bags not to look pristine. My silverado is a bit buggered now due to overuse and its two years old so i have negated the investment bit because its not in that great condition anymore. Nothing for this Xmas though as moving house and had DS earlier this year so cant justify that much on bags anymore (DH will be happy!)

rosieposey · 05/11/2009 08:53

Oh and they are combined Xmas and B/day pressies.

SweetCecily · 05/11/2009 10:16

I think £1000 would be my absolute top limit - but then again if it went just over and I was hankering after it, I might persuade myself ...

SofaQueen · 05/11/2009 10:22

I never scrimp on handbags, and I am not going to say how much I spend on them, but will say that they cost more than 1 terms school fees.

HOWEVER, I buy bags which are timeless and extremely well made (usually hand made), thus will last many, many, many years and still look good and be in fashion. One bag, which I found second-hand, was made the year I was born, but this style is still being made and carried today!

veryconfusedandupset · 05/11/2009 10:32

As a vegetarian I won't buy leather bags - I'd like to be able to spend more on a bag and get a decent quality one. it is so hard to find a synthetic bag with good fittings, and the handles crack after a while. I sometimes have to buy leather shoes, because I have funny feet but I can't understand why more manufacturers don't make good non leather bags ( previously recommended to River Island, which were interesting and inexpensive, but new range have big River Island labels on them)

BitOfFun · 05/11/2009 10:36

You could try Nica bags- I've got a gorgeous non-leather one and it has lasted incredibly well. Really stylish too. Mine was £60-ish for a birthday. Debenhams stock them.

Nezzi · 05/11/2009 10:45

Mine have cost anything from 5-250 pounds. I drool after some expensive bags & I love Mulberry.
sofaqueen are yours Hermes by any chance? I know they are hand made & ingly expensive but are also considered an investment or a piece of art.

BitOfFun · 05/11/2009 10:49

An ISA is an investment. A handbag that costs over a grand is insanity.

brimfull · 05/11/2009 10:59

I couldn't spend more than £100 but that would be a real treat for me. Usually £40-50.

jemart · 05/11/2009 11:04

For a really nice leather bag upto £400.

Non-leather upto £50.

I love Mulberry too!

SofaQueen · 05/11/2009 11:25

Some are, but I don't see them as investments. I'm just sartorially lazy and like hassle free, headache free things which I don't have to worry about.

BitOfFun · 05/11/2009 11:36

Each to their own, it's totally up to you how you spend your money, absolutely. I do wonder what "investment" means when it comes to handbags etc though. Do people really think they will make a profit re-selling them? I don't know much about it to be fair.

VerityBrulee · 05/11/2009 12:05

I love a good handbag, so usually save up for a really good ones. I downsized a few years ago and sold lots on ebay.

I like a beauiful shape, not flashy and as little hardware as possible.

I have 3 bayswaters, one chocolate, and 2 in the most dreamily gorgeous shade of pale pinky lilac, one of which I use, the other is put away until the first is worn out. They were about 500 pounds each.

I have an Anya Hindmarch Lautner which is black patent and navy suede, which I will use for decades, again about 500.

I would love a Fendi Peekaboo, but I've a lot of saving to do for that one

traceybath · 05/11/2009 12:13

up to £600 I guess but I don't think its an investment.

Expensive bags still get scruffy and day to day use means you do get bored of them.

But handbags and sunglasses are my only designer extravagances and less so than when I worked.

pinktortoise · 05/11/2009 12:51

Have spent up to £500 and still have them as tend to use then put away and then rediscover. However at the moment am using a £20 one. So just depends. Although at some point in my life I would like a classic Chanel ......
