How much would you spend on a bag?

Just curious- if you were buying a bag, one that you hoped to get a few years from, what is the most you'd pay?

Spotted a gorge bag from The Bridge in a cute little shop in Rye in the summer which was £270 when I was away with DH. He surprised me & bought it for me - I had to buy boots to match though!

Arf! Love the jaguar. Classy

The funny thing about this is that I'm quite fussy about bags, there are tons I couldn't bring myself to be seen with, but I'm obviously so unfashionable the ones I like are always (apparently) stupidly cheap. Hooray!

CHOOGIRL · 06/11/2009 11:35

I tend to buy one or two bags per year c£700 each. They are all good quality and will be handed on to my DD in due course.

I do have my eye on a Kelly, but thankfully there is a waiting list.

Slubberdegullion · 06/11/2009 11:43

£50 I suppose.

I never really notice bags, unless they are extremely sparkly or ginormous. What do women keep in those bags that look like you could fit Jimmy Krankie in? I'm always very perplexed and want to have a poke about inside them.

lolol at that Jaguar bag (with no strap)
at Riven

SofaQueen · 06/11/2009 15:30

Yes, you can absolutely tell the difference in quality, starting with materials used, attention to detail, and level of after-service.

It is because I hate being ripped off that I only buy the particular make of bag I do. I really use my handbags, and despite almost constant use for 6 years, my "workhorse" bag by them is in almost pristine condition and still "in fashion". DH initially was a bit ashen-faced when I purchased my first one, but he has been converted and now convinces his friends to buy them for their wives.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2009 15:35

Ooh, you lot are hardcore bag consumers.

I am addicted to Radley bags, which are anything from about £60 in the sale to £200 ish.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2009 15:36

SofaQueen - what after-service do you need with your bags????!!!

Example of afterservice: DH surprised me for a birthday buy giving me a bag made in the year I was born. It was in decent shape, but really sad looking. I brought the bag to the store, and it was sent to the workshops and came back to me with the leather refurbished into an almost-new condition.

PuppyMonkey · 06/11/2009 16:10

And how much did that rush you, Sofa?

MadameDuBain · 06/11/2009 16:18

Probably up to £200 for one I really loved, if it was leather, classic and timeless and I thought it would last. In practice, handbags I have bought have been around £50-70, but I do keep an eye out for my perfect bag, which I've never found.

I don't really get the ££££ bag thing - largely because they all look vile to me. When I see expensive bags in magazines that cost £400/£900/£11,000 or whatever - I almost always think "but it's hideous". Hermes Birkin bag for example just look like a granny bag to me. Smythson Nancy even more so.

LetThemEatCake · 06/11/2009 17:23

Oh no, I love the Birkin. If it were ever possible to get one for under a grand, I'd be there

upahill · 06/11/2009 17:41

I spend about £120 -£150 on a bag. Now if your talking rucksacks that's a different ball game!! I've got loads from a 25 litre upwards but I'm guessing nobody on this thread is going to be quite as excited as me over them!!!

SofaQueen · 06/11/2009 18:44

Sorry PuppyMonkey, not sure I understand what "rush you" means (I'm not originally from here).

Oh, and I love the Birkin - it's the ultimate in practical bags.

Zembo · 06/11/2009 19:37

Sofaqueen I'm very curious to know what brand of bag you buy - please do spill the beans.

Rollmops · 06/11/2009 19:40

Put it this way, my next object of desire is the Kelly bag.
Not anytime soon though.....

SofaQueen · 06/11/2009 19:52

Hermes.

this is the way a birkin was meant to be carried for those who think it's a granny bag

MadameDuBain · 06/11/2009 20:14

Doesn't matter how you hold it, it just looks like something your granny would pick up at Oxfam!

I realise I'm just not "getting" it, but long may that continue I suppose, since I don't ever want to spend that kind of bag money.

(had to try it)

Rollmops · 06/11/2009 21:12

MadameDuBain, as Grand Auntie Rollmops used to say: "Darling Rollmops, we are not rich enough to buy cheap things..."
Buy buying true quality, you spend a lot of money once, buying cheap stuff, you keep on buying - it doesen't last.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 06/11/2009 21:25

normally no more then £30, but I bought a patent DKNY bag 2 years ago with my first ever pay cheque, cost £110 which was HUGE to me...i still adore it because I bought it! and it lovely and plain and MINE !

Sadly now i earn more i have more expensive taste not that i spend it but selfridges bag department is wonderful!

I really want a blue pauls boutique bag but everyone aged 16 has one round here

LetThemEatCake · 06/11/2009 21:49

god, what have I done. Started this thread in idleness and now of course have been inspired by the passion/ derision in the responses and have bag mentality ... and have of course now found bag on which I am happy to spend some money that I shouldn't spend.

Ho hum, the devil makes work etc

One day I will have a Mulberry Hobo or Somerset tote.

The best thing IMO about a beautiful handbag is that it doesnt matter whether you are having a fat day or have put on 1/2 a stone - it will never betray you

geordieminx · 06/11/2009 22:07

Although I cannot for the life of me understand why this one is £3.5k
