I've found it - the school run dress for autumn winter 09

the holy grail. Perfect for school run then on to lunch with friend?

I've just ordered mine and I intend to wear it over jeans and converse sometimes or with black Hobbs boots with coloured opaque tights.

I suspect it will look okay over turtle neck thin jewel coloured top as well?

Please don't let it be crap as I love everything about it, especially the price.

Swedes - you are women after my own heart! I am 43 and would happily wear the Peacock dress on the school run although Ino longer have to do a school run as DD is 17 (hurrah!). I am also strangely longing for sequins but don't know what to go for yet. Like the sound of a sequin bag.

I think the Peacock dress has potential but could also look v cheap if the fabric isn't good. Over jeans it would be fine, worn alone, yes, too much for school run

AND I like the Jigsaw dress [arse-licky keep everyone happy emoticon]

SweetCecily - I think sexless is a v good way to describe that dress. It's the sort of thing that would look nice on a toddler. But even then I'd worry about how it might not wear well and whether it would be itchy.

The thing about clothes is it's not about one garment, it's about context. Some people can make even an expensive dress look cheap and shabby. I understand enough about sartorial subtext to know what message I'm trying to convey to the world through my clothes. And it's more Xenia Warrior Princess than sexless fashion victim.

Could I just (geekily) point out that is it Xena Warrior Princess, not Xenia... as warrior princess-like Xenia may be, she is not one and the same.

Swedes - You're right Our clothes signify our social identity and it is human nature to judge people by their image. If you were to walk into a room of strangers, you would automatically presume certain aspects about a person's upbringing, occupation or character, just by their image.

Challenging bullies/the PTA

Being asked by Xena jnr where's his book bag?

I thought the whole idea of a school-run dress was for summer? A dress to throw on over your bikini after sunbathing in the garden. I am sure that is what it was described as at one point.

I would be put off wearing a dress designed by Pearl Lowe, who is a) so hag-like and b) so freakin' ubiquitous in a sort of superannuated Peaches Geldof way

Buda - I use the term school run dress loosely. I mean something that you can wear day to day - clothes which are practical for the pick up from school, hoovering, going to Waitrose yet still manage to look chic and interesting.

at superannuated Peaches Geldof. Yes PL is rough digs slutty and I certainly wouldn't want to look anything like her. But would you want to look like Matthew Williamson?

Sexless? It is understated and stylish imo def not itchy at all Who wants to look overtly sexy in teh playground?Tacky Although the typical school run outfit of your average mum here is levis converse and a groovy jacket and bag!

A 'day-dress' Swedes? That sounds worse than 'school-run' dress!

I've just bought a dress very like the Jigsaw one, and I love it. Primark £13, wool mix. And it seems to wash nicely in a normal wash.

Traceybath - thank you very much for that info, that's kind of you to remember. My fuschia pasmina is from House of Fraser - it's a proper cashmere and silk one. I've had it a few years but I think they still have them as I saw them not so long ago.

Swedes are you from Harpenden then ? I grew up there and family still live there - I would say in Harpenden that dress is totally appropriate for the school run !!!! I had forgotten all about Challis - in my day only the ladies who lunched from East or West common ever dared to enter......

BlueKangaroo - Ah interesting. Nice shape. What will you wear underneath it? Is it see-through? What will you wear with it? Something underneath or over? It wouldn't suit me at all. But I can imagine it would look very lovely on some people although the colour is what I would describe as difficult. Where is v local?
