The opposite of dreading the school fashion parade: dreading the school fleece brigade!

My little girl has just started nursery and I thought it would be nice to get to know some other mums.

I wear fashionable clothes! And because of this, the only mums who talk to me are those very few others who also wear the same kind of clothes. The majority wear bootcut jeans and fleeces. Now I have nothing against fleeces and jeans, and when the weather is rubbish you will find me in the same things!

Does anyone else have this? Honastly, I wore my rain hat the other day and I swear a few of the mums sneered at me. Should I just have turned up with sopping wet hair?!!

I am totally considereding addapting a fleecy look just to get to know some other mums I have tried smiling and saying hello, but no response.

Oh no that is far too masculine. It would go with the floor length back flappy coat.

My flower is staying.

I have even got a wired brim.

HelenaBonhamCarter · 05/09/2009 09:21

This is nice though...

hf128219 · 05/09/2009 09:37

And what is everyone wearing now??

I am sporting a Whistles dress, silver ballet pumps and a Top Shop cardigan.

HelenaBonhamCarter · 05/09/2009 09:40

Get you!!

I have got pink pj bottoms and yesterday's beige jumper. I am having chocolate for breakfast. Tis not good.

In my meagre defence I have been up late researching adjuvant treatment options for a friend.

NoahFence · 05/09/2009 09:41

hf128219 · 05/09/2009 09:48

45 minutes ago I was wearing a pink Miss Splendid nightdress.

I might get changed into my sequin treggings to go to Waitrose. Just in case I bump into anyone I know.

Complete mix at dd pre school. I like to think I look smart enough. Ok I wear jeans but they are smart ones and make me look nice and slim worn with heels. I normally wear some sort of fitted long sleeved t shirt type top and then a very smart mac over it (which I loveas it can look smart). My hair is done and I have my natural looking make up on (not obvious but I wouldn't leave the house without it)

Then you have the fleece lady, the tracksuit lady who power walks while her ds is in school, the man in his suit on the way to work, the casual people with jeans and a nice jacket, so they look casual but quite stylish. Then there are two other women who could arrive in anything from linens and long floaty dresses over them to knee boots and jeans.

Everyone is very friendly (only first week so lots of 'which child is yours?')but general chit chat about how the children are getting on and that. But the other two women I have noticed don't even look in my direction at all so as not to have to say hello. They do talk to eachother though. But on Thursday I walked right past them out side and one of them actually turned her back to me while the other one glanced at me but straight away looked back to the other. I have to say I did think WTF how unfriendly but wahtever. Let playdates for me to tolerate I suppose!

VeronicaMars · 05/09/2009 10:01

LESS playdates I meant. Must spellcheck.

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 05/09/2009 10:22

ummm, jeans. t-shirt and a long sleeved black pyjama top I wear as a long sleeved t-shirt. No idea where any of it came from.
Going shopping in a min and will take off pyjama top and put on abaya and hijab. And crocs
Helena, you going for your namesakes eccentric appearnce with that hat?

I do need some more jeans. These are the only ones that fit. All the rest are from my sister who was a size 16 (now bigger) so she gave me her jeans. i'm a 10 - 12 so they fall down without a belt but I've lost the belt.
Hard to find jeans when you're 5 ' 10

VeronicaMars · 05/09/2009 10:27

You should try New Look for your jeans, they do a lot of tall clothes and their jeans are nice.

OrmIrian · 05/09/2009 10:55

riven - I was just following the zeitgeist of this thread I actually have no idea where my clothes come from (apart the skirt - I remember that as I liked it so much I ordered another one. I too find it odd. Clothes are either nice or not.

FrameyMcFrame · 05/09/2009 11:05

this makes me feel physically sick

It's just trying too hard to be kooky and getting it SO wrong

FrameyMcFrame · 05/09/2009 11:07

the model looks like a twat in it

NoahFence · 05/09/2009 11:12

fewer playdates even?

hambler · 05/09/2009 11:27

Framey some of us are eating breakfast.
That is indeed horrid

claireybee · 05/09/2009 11:38

Jewels I would be looking askance at your hat I'm afraid, but I wouldn't be judging you, it would just be bothering me that the stripes weren't lined up. Then I'd probably be berating myself for worrying about stripes matching up (especially as it obviously doesn't bother someone as well put together as you). Then I'd look at your whole outfit to try and get ideas of how to dress myself (don't buy magazines, don't ever go into town without children so don't window shop and have no clue about fashion)and you'd be reading a whole lot into my expression that I hadn't meant to be there...

bodenites · 05/09/2009 11:58

i am wearing Purple Boden essential V neck and Black Essence(fat) wide legged trousers with turnups i got from Oxfam and sandals and my hair seems to have survived the night and is still straight and shiny

TheDMshouldbeRivened · 05/09/2009 12:58

wouldn't sirens go off in New Look if I tried to get in. I am 40!

lol at that hat n mac.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 05/09/2009 13:13

I'm 46 and I go in to NL and Topshop - just assume a slightly detatched air as if you're looking for a teenage DD.
I don't buy much from there, but have found a couple of casual but pretty summer tops, and sometimes nice cardis from Topshop - and I absolutely have to check out their shoes, even though I'll never wear skyscraper heels.

KristinaM · 05/09/2009 18:12

i am 47 and am wearing new look jeans today

indigo slim flares £20

infant shop assistant did not bat an eyelid so i cant be the only over 40 shopping there

and yes I KNOW skinnies are in - but not for those of us with HUGE norks and tummies

and for those of you who prefer bootlegs, theirs are on offer at £10 ATM

Buda · 06/09/2009 08:09

I shop in New Look too. I am 45. I love their Hula jeans. I am a size 22/24 so shop everywhere that does large sizes and buy what suits me.

I was thinking about this thread over the last few days. I was at DS's school on Friday twice - once for drop-off and once for pick-up. I noticed what ONE person wore. And that was only because it was a nice t-shirt and made her boobs look fab! I spoke to lots of people and would not be able to tell you what any of them had on.

TheScatterGunApproach · 06/09/2009 08:34

Wow, I find my bootcut jeans (the horror!!) a real boon.

I get really long, dark ones and wear them with boots with heels. People think I have regained my pre-baby figure - I haven't! 'Tis an optical illusion!

Skinny jeans make you look like a carrot unless you are absolutely perfectly proportioned.
